Fibershed on Film: An Introduction to Our Project

“fibershed” from Zoe Minikes on Vimeo.

This is the first short video produced for Fibershed– created by the ‘Oh-so-Talented‘ and thoughtful Zoe Minikes.  The conceptualizer and founder of a ‘a current exchange,‘ a project that delves into how humans assign value to aspects of our material and non-material culture.

The video she created  is a short textural introduction to the processes we are taking part in as a Fibershed community–visiting farms (you’ll see Sally Fox here), cutting and sewing (the work of seamstress–Thara Srinivasan), knitting (by Zara Franks), planting indigo (fibershed team), delivering wool to the mill (in Yolo County).

All of these experiences are beginning to frame the visual narrative of our Fibershed.. and as the film states:  ‘Fibershed: Coming Soon’… my wardrobe is 5 garments, 2 accessories, and 3 pairs of socks.. the process of this textile creation is slow, ecologically sane, and beautiful.  As more garments are made, more documentation takes place.  Your experiencing this all first hand, with us… as we delve into some new and uncharted waters of what it means to create clothing from the land we call home.

I’d like to just take a moment to thank both Zoe Minikes and Paige Green for documenting the Fibershed project— they travel to every farm, backyard, and gathering of designers… This video, and the photographs throughout this blog are testaments to their talent, vision, and heart.
