SUMMARY:Wet Felting
DESCRIPTION:Wool fibers have tiny scales that stick out from the hair shaft a microscopic bit. When wool is shocked by dramatic changes in temperature or by rubbing (especially with soap)\, those scales lift up\, then lock down the nearby fibers into a dense mass. That’s felt. If you’ve accidentally put your wool sweater through the hot wash cycle and/or the dryer\, you have intimate knowledge of this process. \n  \nNot all felting is destructive. You can use the same process to produce some wonderful wooly art. In this class you’ll use a white batt as a base\, and embellish with a wide variety of dyed wool. You’ll leave with a finished piece and the equipment you’ll need to create more at home. \n  \nRegister by completing this Google Form. Receipt of payment secures your spot. Venmo is best; PayPal if you don’t use Venmo. melanie@crockettfiberstudio.com\nLimited to 15 participants\nSponsored by Crockett Fiber Arts Studio and McIntyre Ranch\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Ice Dyeing Wool
DESCRIPTION:Fiber\, water\, acid\, and dye are the ingredients needed to dye a skein of yarn. In this class the water source will be ice. The dye is delivered to the yarn gradually as the ice melts\, resulting in some remarkable color results. Way too much fun! \n  \nThe class cost includes two skeins of wool yarn\, plenty of ice\, and lots of dye color choices. We are limiting the class to 15 participants. You might want to bring a project to work on while you wait for the ice to melt. You can also choose to go for a hike or visit with the many animals on the ranch. We’ll have some cold drinks for you\, too. \n  \nRegister by completing this Google Form. Receipt of payment secures your spot. SUMMARY:Botany for Beginners with Ayesha Ercelawn
DESCRIPTION:Join Ayesha for a morning to learn about the basics of botany at the Fibershed Learning Center in Point Reyes Station. \nDuring this hands-on class\, you will improve your observation skills and learn to look for some of the key characteristics that botanists use to identify plants. Fall season classes will focus on leaves\, bark\, seed structures\, and stem arrangements. We will touch on plant families and discuss the natural history and ecology of some of the plants we see. Our last hour will be focused on how to use the tools of nature journaling (simple sketching and/or writing) to deepen our plant observation skills. \nClass will take place outdoors in the beautiful gardens at the Fibershed Learning Center in Point Reyes Station . It will include a variety of hands-on activities\, with a focus on having fun and connecting to the plants around us! \nPlease be prepared for some walking\, bending\, and kneeling. \nStudents should bring layers\, comfortable shoes\, a hat\, sunscreen\, water and a camera/phone. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch to eat in the gardens afterwards. \nA mask is required indoors. \nAyesha Ercelawn is a Marin-based naturalist\, gardener\, and environmental educator\, who has been exploring\, and teaching and journaling about the natural world of the Bay Area for 20 plus years. Ecology and ethnobotany classes during her Master’s at Yale School of the Environment\, inspired her on her journey – a lifelong quest to deepen her understanding of the natural world around her – its fascinating ecology\, as well as how people use plants for healing\, dyes\, fiber\, basketry\, and\, of course\, food. \nAyesha has been fortunate over the years to keep learning from teachers at Fibershed\, Point Reyes Field Seminars\, Gathering Thyme\, Marin County Parks\, Friends of the Regional Parks Botanic Garden\, California Academy of Sciences\, and the John Muir Laws Educator group\, as well as the many plants and animals along the way. Her teaching style is light-hearted\, with a focus on joy\, curiosity\, and connection to the natural world.

SUMMARY:Knitting a Steeked Farm Yarn Cardigan
DESCRIPTION:Four classes included: February 19\, March 19\, April 16\, May 21 — from 2 to 4 pm \nJoin a 4-session “Steekalong” knitting class taught by Gayle Ravenscroft of Pacific Knitting Retreats\, using our own Fibershed farm yarns. Students will knit a colorwork garment together and then cut it open (steek it) to create a cardigan. The class is limited to 12 students\, and will take place at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center at Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station. \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/knitting-a-steeked-farm-yarn-cardigan-tickets-220405527867 \nStudents should choose and purchase either Solbein or Stopover by Mary Jane Mucklestone.  Solbein is designed as a steeked cardigan pattern\, but Gayle will be explaining how to convert a pullover pattern into a cardigan for those who choose Stopover … a good skill for all participants to have! (NOTE: If the pattern choice is Stopover\, a small amount of extra yarn will be required for the button bands.) \nThese patterns are QUICK knits (another good feature!) and produce long wearing and eye catchingly unique pieces. The techniques of these designs are particularly suited to our Fibershed yarns and while the project uses a number of skills\, these patterns are friendly to those with basic knitting skills\, and of course fun for experienced knitters looking to expand into trying new things with company and help. \nPrior to the first session\, students need to purchase their chosen pattern\, select yarn and gather basic supplies as well as prepare their swatches. Our Fibershed producers’ yarns are all perfect for colorwork and steeking with our own California “Lopi Spun” types being particularly lovely.  However\, your choice might be handspun\, or already in your stash. Worsted/Aran weights are ideal — the gauge should be your guide. Barinaga Ranch has beautiful yarns on hand for this class. Please contact Marcia directly by email (marcia@barinagaranch.com) and she will help you with yardage conversions and color choices. Or feel free to contact Gayle (gayle@pacificknittingretreats.com) with any questions and she will respond personally. \nSession 1 (Feb 19\, 2-4pm): Review swatches\, discuss a plan for getting the project done successfully (measurements and how to pick a size you want)\, and review the skills involved. Both are yokes — Solbein is a top down and Stopover is a bottom up — and we will talk about that. We will also explore increases\, decreases and simple stranded colorwork within a basic seamless structure. We will cast on together before leaving. \nA note to those who raise sheep: Anyone who misses the first session due to lambing season can attend a virtual class with Gayle to catch up. Please email her to discuss (gayle@pacificknittingretreats.com). \nSession 2 (Mar 19\, 2-4pm): We gather to review works in progress and get help where needed. We will also try on garments in progress. \nSession 3 (Apr 16\, 2-4pm): Steeking! This is a technique that can sometimes challenge knitters\, but it will be foolproof with our farm yarns!!!  And we will review finishing techniques to complete our cardigans. \nSession 4 (May 21\, 2-4pm): Final Celebration — the wearing and photographing of the cardigans\, with refreshments and lots of laughs! \nImportant note: Due to the ongoing pandemic\, masks are required for all participants\, and we will maintain appropriate physical distance during the classes. \nGayle Ravenscroft has been on a fiber adventure since she learned to knit from her grandmother when she was five years old. She is passionate about all aspects of the craft\, as well as the cultivation of a mindfulness and appreciation for the history and labour represented by each piece of fabric a knitter creates. She is a teacher herself (on Zoom during the pandemic)\, and collaborates with other teachers\, designers and yarn producers around the world to offer as many opportunities to grow as possible to the local knitting community through her tiny business\, Pacific Knitting Retreats\, LLC. Gayle is amazed by her Fibershed and truly grateful for opportunities to participate. \n \nPhoto of Gale Ravenscroft above by Paige Green. SUMMARY:A Mindful Approach to Creating Patches with Maddy Barsch
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a part of Fibershed’s 2022 Mending Challenge Series. (Haven’t signed up for our challenge? Signup here!)\nIf our hand stitching tells a story\, what would your stitches say about you? Would they be long\, linear and smooth? Maybe they’d be short\, staccato and jumbled. When we slow down and give ourselves time to process the passage of time with hand work\, there is a grounding and insight into ourselves that we normally miss. Let’s bring mindful stitching into your mending practice to create patches that can add beauty and function to your garments. Basic needlework skills like threading a needle\, a variety of stitches etc. will be covered\, and no experience is necessary. \nWhen: Wednesday\, July 6\, 3p PT/ 5p CT/6p ET \nLength: 2 hours \nWhere: Zoom \nCost: Sliding Scale\, suggested offering of $15-35 \nRegister here! \nMax. Number of Participants: 20 \nItems needed: \n\nFabric or patches\nYarn/thread\nMarking tool\nNeedles\nPins\nEmbroidery hoop (if you like using one)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About Maddy Bartsch: \nMaddy Bartsch is an artist\, educator and organizer of decentralized textile economies based in Minneapolis. She is a co-founder of the Three Rivers Fibershed (TRF) and has previous experience with the Minnesota Hemp Wool Project\, the TRF Regional Fiber Sourcebook\, the National Mill Inventory Survey\, and as a Yarn Incubator. In addition to fiber systems\, Maddy’s work includes tackling food systems as a member of the Food Fighters Project and as the Community Connector for the Cannon River chapter of the Sustainable Farming Association. Maddy speaks on the topic of local fiber systems and sustainable textiles and teaches fiber arts classes to learners of all ages throughout the Midwest.

SUMMARY:Denim Repair with Janell Wysock
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a part of Fibershed’s 2022 Mending Challenge Series. (Haven’t signed up for our challenge? Signup here!)\n\n\nDedicated to keeping waste at a minimum and the concept to use what we have\, artist and designer Janell Wysock\, is focused on repairing and making clothes functional. Janell produces a line of sweaters\, dresses\, shawls\, and outerwear accessories as well as installation art. She is passionate about not creating waste so in tandem with what she produces she revels in the beauty of what we wear daily keeping those favorite items in rotation to be used and enjoyed. After discovering about 80% of her own personal clothes needed some type of mending\, she decided to start a summer of truly caring for her own clothes and those around her. Taking on any type of repair\, big or small\, to bring clothes back to life was both empowering and important in solving issues around sustainability. If we fix what we have\, we don’t go searching to replace it. We are not taught to even consider spending time keeping the condition of our clothes in working order. If we can continue to use what we have instead of reinvesting in something new\, we have a shot in reducing our consumption. \nJoin us to move past the space of “needing it repaired” to a space of “getting to wear it and feeling proud”. In this Denim Repair workshop\, we will bring a pair of jeans back to life and learn how to repair and embellish with embroidery. \nWhen: Tuesday\, August 9\, 2p PT/ 5p ET \nLength: 2 hours \nWhere: Zoom \nCost: Sliding Scale\, recommended offering of $15-35 \nMax. Number of Participants: 25 \n~ REGISTER HERE ~ \nItems needed: \n\nDenim garment or textile for repair\nNeedle\nThread\nScrap fabric (similar to thickness of your jeans)\nPins\nPencil\nEmbroidery floss\nScrap cardboard\nSmall embroidery hoop – optional\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nMore About Janell Wysock: \nJanell Wysock is a textile artist and designer who builds fabrics structures and designs large scale fiber strands or yarns which she makes to use in various types of textile projects. Typically\, she calls upon very traditional classic materials often used in textiles such as wool and linen\, and in contrast remnant and discarded materials such as bed sheets\, clothing in disrepair\, plastic bags and video cassette tape film. Many of the fabrics she makes are translated into one of a kind fashion pieces. Her work also encompasses textile art pieces for interiors and installations for both indoors and outdoors. Creating an environment is her focus\, and various elements that make up the extent of her scope of work often come together in unison whether it is an independent piece or blending together multiple components. Allowing the viewer to participate in various ways such as helping on community projects through\, donating old materials to be up-cycled\, or helping make strand\, their own personal weaving and different points of access to watch and learn through video and her teaching practice is what makes connecting with Janell unique. Her intention is to allow the viewer or participant to align with their own personal ideas of art\, expression and sustainability feeling grounded and inspired to constantly improve in what it is they do to contribute to arts\, culture and an environment that works for everyone. \n\n\n\n\n\n~ REGISTER HERE ~

SUMMARY:4-Week Sewing Lab at Marin Sewing Lab (Evening sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Sewing Lab at the Marin Sewing Lab is a 4-week session with a 2.5-hour class per week. There are usually one daytime Sewing Labs and one evening Sewing Labs during each session. As a bonus to students\, I allow one free-of-charge make up class per session. (should there be available space in another weekly sewing lab\, and it almost always is). Each week I demonstrate a sewing technique. The demonstration is usually 15 minutes long and cover basic sewing techniques. \nIf you are brand new to sewing\, I highly recommend that you take a private class initially\, to acquaint yourself with your machine and learn the very basics of machine sewing. I offer an introduction package of a two-hour private class + one Sewing Lab four-week session for $395. There is a library of patterns of simple beginner projects available for free in the classroom. Some sewing supplies are available for purchase at the studio. There is a serger and a cover machine for student perusal as well as a manual snap fastening press. \nAll classes are taught at 64 Louise Street in San Rafael. Cancellation policy: Two weeks prior to class are fully refundable\, thereafter only if a wait listed person accepts the opening.\n\nWhy come to Sewing Lab?\nA love of adornment is one of our most basic tendencies. It exists in all cultures telling stories about who we are and how we see ourselves. Come together in this class to make your own simple clothing and hone your sense of style. Be inspired to develop your skills in a group of supportive women. Making your own clothing is a perfect alternative and compliment to buying ready-made clothing! It gives you a perfect playground to choose your own colors\, styles and fabric quality. However\, if you rather sew home textiles and accessories at Sewing Lab there is a pattern library of easy styles of zipper pouches\, accent pillow cases\, tote bags etc. Free of charge and always at your disposal! Enjoy the easy make-up-missed-class protocol. The Slow Fashion movement has a presence at Sewing Lab! There are many fabric companies that now produces regenerative sustainable fibers and fabrics.\nPlease contact me here to register or to get your questions answered! \nWho comes to Sewing Lab?\nMost students come to Sewing Lab because they want to learn to make their own simple clothing but many come to work on special interest projects; home textiles and mending for instance. Some have signed up because they have a small business and want to polish up the construction of their wares. Some advanced or intermediate sewists come to be part of a supportive group and for expert guidance.  Sewing Lab is scheduled in 4 week sessions. Each weekly class is 2.5 hours. You may choose evening or daytime sewing lab. Bring your own machine\, project and supplies. Class size is max 5 students. Please contact me if you want more information or to register for a class!

SUMMARY:Monthly Fibershed Mending Bar Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Breathe new life into your favorite textiles with local mending experts\, Heidi & Allison!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIf a new garment is kept for nine months longer than the typical use cycle\, it reduces the garment’s carbon footprint by 30% (The Waste and Resources Action Programme 2015). In a world enveloped by fast fashion and linear textile streams\, we encourage you to think about the longevity of your clothes and other textiles. How are you taking care of your garments/ textiles? How can you prolong the life of your second skin? \nMending is a wonderful way to transform your favorite moth-damaged\, torn\, or distressed garments\, homewares\, and other textiles. In these mending bar happy hours\, you will learn how to visibly mend with cotton thread and patching\, along with woven mending\, developing your own stitch patterns. You will be fusing fabrics together with stitch\, so they become a new cloth! You have the option of practicing boro\, sashiko\, darning\, & quilting techniques on a sampler first\, or you can jump right in and start on the item you brought to repair. \nEach student will receive an individual consultation on how best to mend one garment considering fabric\, fiber\, thread\, color\, lines\, techniques\, and more. Students will leave the workshop with a stitching sampler (optional)\, mended garment (in-progress)\, and a basic understanding of mending. Basic sewing and stitching skills are required. \nIf you don’t have a garment to mend but want to explore visible mending to create an abstract art piece\, you are also welcome to join! We often make practice samplers to explore different shapes and color stories that then get turned into pillows or wall hangings. \nMaterials provided: \n\nFabric for creating a mending sampler\nEmbroidery & pearl cotton thread\nExtra fabric for patches\nYarn for mending/darning knitted garments and textiles\nNeedles of varying types and sizes. (Sashiko needles will be provided during class & available for purchase)\nEmbroidery hoops (Only available for use during class)\nOther: Scissors\, chalk pencils\, rulers\, fabric glue sticks\n\nCost: Donation-based \nWhen: Monthly Mending Bar Happy Hours will be held Fourth Thursday of every month\, 4-7p \nTime Slots: We will have rolling arrival times. There will be an hour-long time slot at 4p\, 5p\, and 6p. Although we request that you arrive close to your timeslot\, feel free to stay longer to work on your mending project. \nBring… \nA Mending Project \n\nPlease bring your own woven fabric garment or textile for mending. Garments made out of cotton\, linens\, & lighter-weight types of denim are good starter projects. Do not bring heavy denim\, canvas\, silk\, gauze\, t-shirts or leggings\, anything out of jersey fabric for your first project. We will talk about why these things are harder to mend and best practices for mending them.\nPatching fabric: Patching fabric should match the weight and fiber of the garment being mended. Don’t worry if you don’t have fabric\, there will be fabric available in class too. If fixing a pair of jeans with stretch\, using t-shirt fabric works well or other denim with stretch. Using cloth that has already softened and settled through wear and washing\, for instance\, pillowcases\, tea towels\, well-worn shirts\, as well as some fresh new shirting fabrics make great patches.\n1-3 skeins if using different colors (half skeins are fine) of embroidery\, sashiko\, or pearl cotton thread. Thread and yarn available for use.\nEmbroidery hoop that is a suitable size to fit the project. When picking out an embroidery hoop you want a minimum of 2” of room beyond the area being mended. Embroidery hoops will also be available to use.\nSashiko or embroidery needles. Sashiko needles will be available for purchase if you don’t have them already. Thread will also be available to use. AND/ OR\n\nA Darning Project (Woven mending) \n\nPlease bring your own woven fabric garment or textile for mending.\nYarn to use for mending. Yarn will be available for use.\nDarning egg or mushroom\, speed loom\, or tennis ball\, a rubber band or hair tie.\nDuplicate stitch/knitted mending: Bring double-pointed or regular needles in the appropriate size as well as a size or two smaller for picking up stitches and a darning needle. Circular needles in a 16” or 24” also work but aren’t ideal. Darning needles will also be available to use.\n\nRequirements: \n\nItems to be laundered first (please make sure garments are clean and mostly wrinkle-free!)\nWoolen items with moth holes must be sealed in a bag\, frozen for 48 hours to kill any potential larvae\n\nCovid-19 Protocol: Please note that each Fibershed workshop may have different covid-19 protocols based on the teacher’s requests. \nDue to the continued uncertainty and unpredictability of Covid\, and in order to keep everyone safe\, we require all participants to wear masks (double-layer fabric mask or a proper n-95) and practice 6’ social distancing. We are also offering a limited number of spots available per mending session. Although our main mending area is indoors\, we also have a deck and various outdoor workspaces that can be utilized as weather permits. Proof of full vaccination plus booster is required (for our February sessions\, rapid tests will be available for non-boosted individuals). Make sure you have documentation saved on your phone to show upon arrival. You will not be able to participate without it.
