SUMMARY:Weaving Bootcamp for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Weaving Bootcamp for Beginners: Weaving with Chunky Yarn and Wool Roving \n \nIn this weaving bootcamp\, you will learn the basics of weaving using thick\, luxurious yarns and wool roving (it’s that magical fluffy stuff that looks like clouds of yarn!!) You will learn beginner-level weaving skills such as how to warp a loom\, weave with a needle\, head weave with roving\, and how to make a decorative fringe. To hone your new skills\, you will work on completing one chunky wool wall hanging\, which measures 12″ X 22″ in size. Each wall hanging comes with a wooden dowel or copper pipe to insert across the top for easy hanging and beautiful wall display! Each student will leave with one finished wall hanging\, one wooden weaving loom\, a handout with a recap of the skills\, terms\, and resources discussed in class\, and the skill to design and produce additional weaving projects on their loom at home! \n \nPre-requisite: None. This class is ideal for total beginners with no experience. If you have taken our Intro to Weaving: Woven Tapestry Edition class\, please note that this bootcamp class teaches a different style of weaving\, uses a different loom\, and utilizes thicker yarns for the final wall hanging. This bootcamp is a fantastic compliment to the skills taught in the Intro to Weaving class\, but by no means requires any prior weaving experience. \n \nSupplies Needed: None. We have done all the legwork of sourcing the hard-to-find yarns\, roving\, and a simple wooden loom. You will receive a loom that measures 17″ X 23″\, and is simple to disassemble for easy storage. These wooden looms usually run around $30 retail. Various yarn colorways will be offered as well. \n \nThe rules / important stuff: We have a NO EXCEPTIONS 72 HOUR CANCELLATION policy – this includes cancellation\, re-books\, gift certificates\, moving classes\, etc. For more information on canceling a class\, please read our cancellation policy. All classes are 21+ unless you email for permission. If any questions\, please email us at info AT workshopsf DOT org. \n \nInstructor Bio: At a young age Keyaira’s grandmother taught her how to sew. In 2012 she used this skill to open her Etsy Shop\, featuring handmade bags. Due to her love of home design\, she also taught herself how to weave. In 2016 she transitioned her shop into customizable leather work & began selling her weavings. In 2017 she began doing more complex weavings & completed her first installation piece. She currently splits her time between teaching and running her own business as a maker\, marketer and distributor; and creating commissioned pieces. You can learn more about her and purchase her work at www.keyaiira.com.

SUMMARY:Beginning Nuno Felting
DESCRIPTION:Nuno Felting is a way of creating garments\, sculptures\, hats and art pieces using the interlocking trait of wool fibers laid over silk. The fibers bond to the silk\, creating a lightweight felted fabric that can be used in many ways. The technique was developed around 1992 by Polly Stirling\, a fiber artist from New South Wales\, Australia. The word “nuno” means cloth in Japanese. \n \nLindy plans to teach three classes in Nuno felting\, allowing participants to dig deeply into this technique. \n \nIn the beginning class\, students will learn to design by layering different wools and synthetic fibers over a thin silk fabric to produce a piece that can be used as an accent to other garments\, a purse\, wallet or hat. \n \nAbout Lyndy Pickens: \nFalling in love with fleece while growing up\, Lyndy Pickens learned to spin as a teenager. During her evolution with fleece\, she was introduced to felting when her favorite sweater shrunk in the wash! Eventually\, Nuno felting became her passion and interfaced well with her Clothing and Textile background. Her felted garments are works of art and an inspiration to anyone who loves working with fiber. \n \nWhen: Sunday\, May 5\, 11:00 a.m. Three-hour class \nHosted by Melanie Perkins\, Taught by Lyndy Pickens \nCost: $125\, includes all materials \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Design Your Own Boxy Tee with Cal Patch
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Cal Patch \nSewing your own clothes is satisfying and practical. Drafting your own patterns goes one step further and puts the entire design process in your hands. Cal will teach you how to draft a pattern for a simple woven top that can easily be customized in myriad ways. This is a perfect intro to pattern-drafting if you’ve been wanting to dip your toe in the water\, and the sewing couldn’t be simpler. This basic t-shirt shape makes a lovely “blank canvas” pattern to use as a foundation for all sorts of techniques: piecing\, quilting\, embroidering\, dyeing\, eco-printing… and of course\, you can combine and layer the treatments to create the most special garments. \n \nWe all have fat quarters or other smallish cuts of precious fabrics\, too small to use for garments – until now! You can play around with different seam placements and piece together smaller scraps of fabric\, placing some of those treasured morsels front and center. \n \nIn this workshop\, we’ll begin by drafting the basic pattern to your measurements\, then cut + sew a quick muslin (fit sample) to check fit\, and tweak the pattern if necessary. Next\, you’ll either continue by turning your sample into a *wearable muslin* or cut a new one\, perhaps adding extra seams or pockets. Beginner stitchers will keep it fairly simple\, and those with more advanced skills can customize to their hearts’ content. Everyone will leave with a shirt that reflects their personality and the skills to make many more! \n \nSupplies
: About 2 yards total of woven fabric (cotton\, linen\, etc)\, though this can be made up of smaller pieces of a few different fabrics\, and is also dependent upon the actual measurements of your pattern; 2 yards muslin* or inexpensive woven fabric; Thread to match; Paper for drafting
; Pencil\, eraser\, and sharpener
; Ruler (18” x 2” clear sewing ruler is best)
; Tape measure
; Paper scissors
; Clear tape
; Sewing machine**; Basic sewing kit: Fabric shears\, pins\, marking tool\, seam ripper; Optional: hip curve or French curve \n*Note: You are welcome to use a fabric other than muslin\, which can most likely become a “wearable muslin”\, but the main purpose is as a fit sample. \n** If you need to rent a sewing machine for use during class\, please add “Sewing Machine Rental” to your cart along with your class. Call the shop with any questions at 510-595-8372. \n \n1 session / 6 hours\, plus 30-minute break for lunch \nClass Size: 7 students max. \nDate: Sunday\, May 12th\, 2019 \nTime: 10:00 am – 4:30 pm \nCancellation policy: Please note\, for this special event\, you must cancel 7 days before the start date of your class in order to receive a full refund. We cannot honor any refunds within 7 days of the class start date unless we are able to fill the class from the waiting list.
