SUMMARY:Soap & Lotion Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday November 18th  – Wild Oat Hollow is hosting a soap and lotion making class – how to make climate beneficial goat milk soap. \nCome learn how to make your own soap and luxurious lotion at home. In this 3-hour class\, you will be guided through the entire process of both soap making and lotion making: we will make two different soaps using local\, sustainable ingredients (organic oils\, animal fats\, hydrosols\, butters & essential oils)\, determining our recipe on a soap calculator\, safety procedures and making your soap. \nYou will then get to decorate your soap with a variety of dried and fresh herbs. You will go home with 2 bars of soap in a silicone (reusable) mold and 2 ounces of the lotion in a glass jar. Note that it takes 2.5 weeks for the soap to cure and be ready for use. You must wear closed-toe shoes to this class. \n \nWhat You Will Learn \n\nLearn about all of the ingredients you can get from your back yard and local farmers to make your own cosmetics\nGo home with full-size products that we’ve made and a detailed handout with recipes\, ingredient information & instructions\nThe benefits of the various ingredients will be discussed (e.g. oils\, butters\, clays\, herbs\, salts\, teas\, essential oils) so you can customize the products based on your needs and preferences\nThe ingredients are organic\, ethically wild-harvested\, gluten-free – highlighting how we can make our own skin care products from local ingredients\nA list of recommended books and supplies\nA pot of hot chai and snacks will be provided during our break between soap and lotion making\nA tour of Natalia’s transitional climate beneficial farm the garden\, orchard\, sheep and chickens\nClimate Beneficial yarn\, goat milk soap\, lotion\, herbal products from Combing Forces and other farm products will be available for purchase. Just have fun!\n\nAbout the Organizers \nFounded by Sarah Keiser\, Wild Oat Hollow\, in 2012\, Dandelion Skin Care was acquired by herbalist and maker Natalia Bertotti earlier this year. Natalia and Sarah recognized they share similar values of locally made\, climate beneficial skin care products. \nNatalia has been a practicing herbalist for 6 years and she is in collaboration with another mentor\, Catherine Abby Risch\, who has been a practicing herbalist for 50 years. SUMMARY:Workshop: Weaving on a Mayan Backstrap Loom with Sari Monroy Solís
DESCRIPTION:Learn to weave on a brocade-ready loom that you keep. This class will focus on introducing you to traditional Mayan backstrap loom technique. You will learn on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home. The class will begin by learning the history of the loom\, how your body connects to the loom\, the parts of the loom\, and how to do plain weaving. Once you are comfortable with plain weaving\, you will learn how to do single-sided brocade motifs. Through this process\, you will learn the names and origins of these motifs and understand how you can design your own patterns. \nThe backstrap loom is one of the oldest technologies in the world and still used to this day to make some of the longest-lasting clothing. Besides being a very portable loom\, it is of great cultural significance to the highlands of Guatemala\, Mesoamerica\, and the Andes. The backstrap loom called to Sari ever since she was a child and saw the loom her father migrated with from Guatemala. Sari first learned to weave from elders in her community in Guatemala. DESCRIPTION:Explore plants of the Northern California coastal landscape\, how to extract color for natural dyes\, and what it means to grow a relationship with plants and place. Hosted at the beautiful Elderflower Farm in Caspar\, CA. \nThe property is fully off-grid\, providing a tranquil space for us to gather\, engage our senses and skill-build in community. You can expect two hands-on workshops days learning how to identify\, forage and process plants for natural dyes at the beach and Elderflower Farm. A mix of guided and self-led downtime\, shared meal times and plenty of time with nature. \nAbout the Camp\nOn-site camping at Elderflower Farm\, 2 days of natural dye workshops\, light hiking\, beach time\, optional group meal times\, and plenty of solo time to reflect & explore. Vegetarian meal provided Friday evening for the welcoming circle. All other meals will be self-provided. \nDates\nSeptember 6th\, 7th\, 8th 2024. Arrive anytime after 1pm Friday. This will leave us with a solid approach to one of the most important aspects of the craft: acquiring dye materials.\nOn our second day\, we’ll work with a curated selection of Northern California’s finest wild dye specimens\, exploring the specific route to optimal color required by each fungal group. We’ll coax vibrant hues from the entire spectrum of color.\nOur third day together is dedicated to dyeing your own selection of protein fibers: wool\, silk\, alpaca\, etc. Bring 6 oz of protein fibers to dye\, plus additional fiber – in case there’s extra dye to utilize\, there almost always is! This workshop aspect shows how fiber selection plays a role in showcasing the color. Observing everyone’s variable results will enable you to take note and move forward confidently in fiber selection.\n\nIn this workshop\, you’ll connect with other fungi and fiber enthusiasts while you enhance your skills at spotting mushroom habitats\, testing for color\, and ultimately creating stunning\, naturally dyed fibers from local fungal dye species.
