SUMMARY:Workshop: Weaving on a Mayan Backstrap Loom with Sari Monroy Solís
DESCRIPTION:Learn to weave on a brocade-ready loom that you keep. This class will focus on introducing you to traditional Mayan backstrap loom technique. You will learn on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home. The class will begin by learning the history of the loom\, how your body connects to the loom\, the parts of the loom\, and how to do plain weaving. Once you are comfortable with plain weaving\, you will learn how to do single-sided brocade motifs. Through this process\, you will learn the names and origins of these motifs and understand how you can design your own patterns. \nThe backstrap loom is one of the oldest technologies in the world and still used to this day to make some of the longest-lasting clothing. Besides being a very portable loom\, it is of great cultural significance to the highlands of Guatemala\, Mesoamerica\, and the Andes. Mayan weavers\, to this day\, continue to make textiles with this loom. \n  \nDate and Time\nSaturday\, April 27th\, 2024 \n10:00AM – 4:00 PM PDT \n  \nLocation\nFibershed Learning Center \n14000 Point Reyes – Petaluma Road \nPoint Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \n  \nAbout The Instructor\nSari Monroy Solís is a fiber artist and Mayan backstrap loom weaver in Northern California. The backstrap loom called to Sari ever since she was a child and saw the loom her father migrated with from Guatemala. Sari first learned to weave from elders in her community in Guatemala. Working with the loom inspired her to research the loom deeply and to explore various techniques that exist for the backstrap loom\, including those from the highlands of Veracruz\, Mexico where mother’s family is from. You can follow her as she continues to play with fiber and document ancestral fiber arts on IG: @theblueweaver \n  \nHow to Register\nLearn more information and secure your spot by registering through this link.

SUMMARY:Regional Rainbows: Northern CA Fungal Fibershed with Alissa Allen
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Regional Rainbows: Exploring the Northern California Fungal Fibershed with Alissa Allen of Mycopigments \nJoin us for a three-day immersive workshop revealing the vibrant hues of the Northern California Fungal Fibershed at the Fibershed Learning Center in Point Reyes\, CA. In this three-day course\, you will experience the breadth of the art and science behind working with fungal dyes. \nDate\nApril 18th to April 20 \n9am – 4pm \nLocation\nFibershed Learning Center \n14000 Point Reyes – Petaluma Road Point Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \nThe Event\n\nWe’ll start by exploring the local landscape\, practicing techniques for spotting\, documenting\, and identifying mushrooms and lichens with ethical harvest practices at the forefront of our minds. We’ll then go through the process of testing our findings for dye potential. This will leave us with a solid approach to one of the most important aspects of the craft: acquiring dye materials.\nOn our second day\, we’ll work with a curated selection of Northern California’s finest wild dye specimens\, exploring the specific route to optimal color required by each fungal group. We’ll coax vibrant hues from the entire spectrum of color.\nOur third day together is dedicated to dyeing your own selection of protein fibers: wool\, silk\, alpaca\, etc. Bring 6 oz of protein fibers to dye\, plus additional fiber – in case there’s extra dye to utilize\, there almost always is! This workshop aspect shows how fiber selection plays a role in showcasing the color. Observing everyone’s variable results will enable you to take note and move forward confidently in fiber selection.\n\nIn this workshop\, you’ll connect with other fungi and fiber enthusiasts while you enhance your skills at spotting mushroom habitats\, testing for color\, and ultimately creating stunning\, naturally dyed fibers from local fungal dye species. In addition to your own dyed fiber\, you’ll take home an instructional guide\, a field testing kit\, an elegantly designed silk scarf\, and a rainbow record of recipes and samples from the best local species. \n– – – – – – – – – – \nPlease bring any personal snacks\, lunch and beverages. Coffee and tea will be offered. \nMaximum 15 students. \n– – – – – – – – – – – \nAbout the Instructor\nAlissa Allen is a naturalist and textile artist based in Washington state and the founder of Mycopigments (2012). She is widely known for sharing her love for mushroom and lichen dyes through her in-person workshops and international public outreach platform\, Mushroom and Lichen Dyers United. \nRegister Now

In 2012 the importance of producing textiles on a local level was becoming a national movement. Missing in the local textile production in Northern California was linen. Sandy and other community members in Chico began to grow then harvest fiber flax for linen. In 2017 her husband Durl Van Alstyne joined the local linen movement when they acquired a small farm to expand their vision. The farm gave them the opportunity to grow fiber flax on a larger scale while practicing Regenerative Agriculture. Harvesting on a larger scale required a need to create small scale mechanical flax processing tools to accommodate their growth. Chico Flax was then created which is now a non profit called Golden State Linen to education and encourage flax to linen as a viable industry here in the north state. \nRegister Now
