SUMMARY:Wild Basketry - Invasive Plant Twined Basket (& Hand Broom) with Julia Han
DESCRIPTION:Learn the more intricate twining technique and create your own unique basket using foraged invasive grasses and other plant materials\nThis workshop is part one of a two-day weekend series on invasive plant basketry. Register for both classes\, or for an individual class. \nDate\nSunday\, June 29 \n10am – 4pm PDT \nAbout the Class\nThis workshop is part two of a two-day weekend series on invasive plant basketry. Register for both classes\, or for an individual class. \nDuring this workshop\, we’ll continue explore the fiber potential of wild plants with instructor Julia Han at the Fibershed Learning Center. We will begin with a shorter walk to review plants covered on Day 1. Back in the workshop\, you’ll learn the more intricate twining technique and begin creating your own unique basket using foraged invasive grasses and other plant materials. We’ll also include a demonstration on how to make a simple hand broom using foraged materials. \nThis workshop offers a hands-on introduction to working with wild plants and finer basketry work. Take this as a standalone workshop\, or pair it with Day 1 to deepen your skills. \nFull Weekend Description for Day 1 & 2: \nJoin us for a two-day\, hands-on experience of identifying\, foraging\, and transforming common invasive grasses and other plants into beautiful and functional objects using essential basketry techniques. After these beginner-friendly workshops\, you’ll leave with your own handmade works and the eyes to continue working with foraged materials on your own. Along the way\, we’ll touch on the ecological role of invasive species and how we can make use of these abundant materials that are often overlooked. \nEach day will begin with a walk through the Fibershed property\, where we’ll observe and identify plants suitable for fiber and other uses. Along the way\, we’ll discuss ethnobotanical uses\, sustainable harvesting practices\, and what to look for in strong\, flexible materials. Back in the workshop space\, we’ll examine a variety of dried plant materials — grasses\, leafy fibers\, woody vines and branches\, barks\, and roots—and learn how each category behaves and what use it’s best suited for. \nOn Day 1 [link]\, we’ll get hands-on with invasive grasses and other foraged plants through the essential skill of cordage-making\, gaining an understanding of how different fibers behave when twisted together. We’ll then create a soft basket using the coiling technique\, where a material is wrapped and stitched around a central core\, incorporating your cordage into the design. \nOn Day 2 [link]\, we’ll build a basket using the more intricate twining technique\, using cordage as the foundational spokes and learning key tips for creating a strong structure. The workshop will feature a demo on making a small hand broom using bundled grasses or other foraged plant materials. \nSeparate registration is required for both days. \nMaximum 10 students. \nParticipants must bring: \n\nPruners or sharp scissors\, for cutting plant fibers\nTowel (one that can get messy)\nAny personal snacks\, lunch\, and beverages. Coffee and tea will be provided.\nA notebook and pen for note taking is encouraged.\n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Help the Kelp: Create Natural Dye with Sea Urchins\, with Seelie Studio
DESCRIPTION:Help the kelp by dyeing silk and wool items with the overpopulation of purple urchins! Meet live urchins and learn about oceanic dyes \nDate\nSaturday\, July 12\, 2025 \n10am – 4pm PDT \nLocation\nFibershed Learning Center \n14000 Point Reyes – Petaluma Road Point Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \nAbout the Event\nThe Fibershed Learning Center is excited to offer Seelie Studio‘s most in-depth urchin dye workshop to date! \nFor the first time\, Margaret Seelie\, the founder of Seelie Studio\, will show you the entire urchin dye process\, beginning with how we source the urchins\, process their bodies with care\, and create the dye. You’ll have your own dye station where you’ll get to experience this unforgettable natural dye process and dye a silk pillowcase\, wool scarf\, and small silk squares. \nFor the first time\, Seelie Studio will also have live urchins in class for you to touch\, hold\, and marvel at these magnificent creatures. You’ll learn about our spikey friends with PhD student and urchin extraordinaires Maddie Armstrong. \nSea Urchins are incredible creatures. However\, due to human impact\, their populations have gone unchecked\, and they have consumed 95% of the kelp forests in California. In efforts to help the kelp and honor these magnificent animals\, we will create beautifully dyed items using urchins from various kelp restoration projects along the West Coast. Join us at the intersection of environmental responsibility and artistic expression. \nWhat’s included: \n✴ Personal dye kit station with ingredients for a half-gallon sea urchin dye bath\n✴ One silk pillowcase with zipper (14”)\n✴ One wool scarf (8×54”)\n✴ Two silk squares\n✴ One urchin shell (also known as a test)\n✴ (optional) You are welcome to bring any silk or wool items from home\, like yarn\, that you wish to dye. If there is enough dye left over\, you’re welcome to use it.\n✴ (optional) Bring a jar to take any leftover dye or sludge home with you to keep experimenting. \nNote: Seelie Studio will have urchin dye kit refills available for purchase! Each refill includes enough acid and urchin spine dust to create a ½ gallon dye bath on your own. You will also take home the glass jar we used to create your dye in class. \nMaximum 16 students. \nParticipants must bring: \n\nAny personal snacks\, lunch\, and beverages. Coffee and tea will be provided.\nA notebook and pen for note taking is encouraged.\nAppropriate\, studio-safe clothing and footwear\n\nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Wildcrafternoon Children's Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays this Spring! \nJoin us at the Fibershed Learning Center for a nature-based crafting workshop series\, led by nature-based educator Èské Addams and designed especially for young learners\, age 7 and up. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn various nature-based crafting skills and to engage directly with different types of organic materials and hand tools. \n🌿 Dates & Workshop Activity Lineup: These Saturdays will be monthly–please sign up separately for each event via Eventbrite: \n\n📜 February 28: Making Paper\, Seedballs\, & Paper-pulp Sculptures\,\n📚 March 28: Bookbinding & Nature journaling\,\n🍂 April 18: Flower pressing & Nature collages\,\n🧺 May 30: Basket & Cordage weaving\,\n🍃 June 27: Eco-printing & Plant dyeing\,\n\n🌿Registration: While most other Fibershed workshops use a need-based scholarship application fee structure\, this workshop series uses a self-reporting sliding-scale approach (based on the Green Bottle model)\, which was personally designed by the teacher and is used in all of her educational offerings. \nMaximum 10 students per workshop\, so reserve your child’s spot via our May 30th Evenbrite listing  (fees are included in the ticket cost to maximize access for all). \nTravel / Childcare Assistance: Fibershed offers limited assistance for travel and/or childcare. If you would not otherwise be able to attend a workshop due to transportation challenges or limited resources as a parent\, please apply for our Accessibility Assistance application. \nQuestions?: Email LearningCenter@fibershed.org.
