SUMMARY:Locavore Wonderland - Berkeley Farmers Markets
DESCRIPTION:The farmers’ market is not just a place for groceries: it’s a great place to find gifts! Preserves\, aged balsamic vinegar\, locally roasted coffee\, hot sauce\, fair trade chocolate\, and local honey are great gifts available all year round. Over the month of December\, join us at the farmers’ market for a holiday gifting series featuring weekly pop-up vendors selling even more gifts for the foodies in your lives—plus handmade jewelry\, woodwork\, soaps & body care\, pottery\, and other handmade goods. \nThe Berkeley Farmers’ Markets are open-air marketplaces where California farmers bring fresh\, locally-grown produce and farm-processed foods to sell directly to consumers. Our markets feature fruits\, vegetables\, nuts\, baked goods\, jams and preserves\, juices\, olive oils\, meat\, cheese\, prepared foods\, and flowers. We are committed to supporting small-scale farmers who practice sustainable agriculture. \nShopping at a farmers market is a wholly unique experience where farmers\, local artisans and shoppers get to know each other\, do business\, and help each other. When you shop at the farmers’ market\, you shop local\, you shop sustainable\, and you shop community. \nIt can be hard to leave the house in the winter season\, especially when your shopping can be as little as a click away. But the wintertime farmers’ market is a special experience worth savoring. Things are a little slower. There’s more time to connect with your vendors. \nOur wintertime Pop-up Gifting Series will feature even more vendors with unique products that tell the story of the shop-local movement. Right at the farmers’ market\, the same place you can buy ingredients for your family dinner\, you can purchase a hand-crafted gift from the person who made it. \nBundle up and slow down this winter season. Take the time to enjoy the thriving community that sustains the slow food movement. Shop local for your holiday gifts at the farmers’ market\, and you may find that the real gift is the experience. \nAbout Ecology Center \nFounded in 1969\, the Ecology Center is a nonprofit organization located in Berkeley\, California that focuses on improving the health and the environmental impacts of urban residents. We address critical issues through a model of education\, demonstration\, replication\, and advocacy. \nLocation \nTuesdays \n12/5/23 \n12/12/23 \n12/19/23 \n\nSouth Berkeley Farmers’ Market\nAdeline St @ 63rd Street\n2-6:30PM\n\n  \nThursdays \n12/7/23 \n12/14/23 \n12/21/23 \n\nNorth Berkeley Farmers’ Market\nShattuck Ave @ Vine St\n3-7pm\n\n  \nSaturday \n12/2/23 \n12/9/23 \n12/16/23 \n12/23/23 \n\nDowntown Berkeley Farmers’ Market\nCenter St @ MLK\n10-3pm\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Create a “Vegetarian Sheepskin” Seat Pad\nSaturday\, December 9\, 2023 10:30-4:00 PT \nLearn how to use wet felting to create faux sheepskin pelts. In this class we will work on making seat pads but you will leave with the knowledge (and your pad and other materials) needed to create full size rugs\, scarves\, throws\, pet beds\, and anything else you might see a pelt used for. All materials will be provided\, including the wool\, so you can even say hi to the sheep you will be sitting on. \nAbility to stand at a table and do rolling pin type motions for an extended amount of time is necessary. This class will be outdoors so please dress accordingly and keep in mind that this process can be messy and wet. There will be time for a break so be sure to bring a lunch. \nTeacher: Siobhan Harlakenden is enthusiastic about all things wool. She is a delightful teacher and brings her interest in historical textile construction to her classes\, the latest of which was Medieval Distaff and Spindle Spinning at Lambtown 2023. \nWorkshop fee: $100\nMaterials fee: $66 \nThe materials fee includes all the wool you will need and the supplies that are used to create the faux sheepskin. SUMMARY:Laneus Shawl\, Hat or Sweater - Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The ‘Roosimine’ technique is used in Teti Lutsak’s Laneus series of patterns and creates beautiful embroidery inlays on the surface of your knitting.  This technique is not applied\, but incorporated into the work as you go.  Choose one of the Laneus patterns (there is a hat\, shawl and pullover in the series) and make your own beautiful botanical knit.  We will learn the origins and how to execute the Roosimine  and review the patterns and potential yarn choices in the first session – and then check in in the second session to review and troubleshoot.  Some familiarity with colourwork is helpful – but not essential.  No homework – we will swatch in the first class! \nRegister Here\n  \nDATES/TIMES\n2 Saturdays; January 27 and February 17\, 2024 \n2:00 – 4:00PM \n  \nLEVEL\nIntermediate – Confident with casting on. the knit and purl stitch\, reading a pattern.
SUMMARY:Documenting Diversity: A Bioblitz of the Fibershed Watershed ft Damon Tighe
DESCRIPTION:Participate in the national City Nature Challenge exploring the biodiversity within Point Reyes Station’s 1\,350 acre Black Mountain Ranch! \nDate\nApril 27\, 2025 \n10AM – 2 PM \nLocation\nFibershed Learning Center \n14000 Point Reyes – Petaluma Road Point Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \nAbout this event\nLearn about local plants\, animals\, fungi and insects while helping us all understand the diversity of organisms that share in Fibershed‘s watershed by participating in a BioBlitz using the iNaturalist platform. We will meet at the Fibershed Learning Center in Point Reyes Station for this opportunity to venture into a glimpse of the 1\,350 acre private\, wild land of Black Mountain Ranch where it is based. \n\nA BioBlitz is a focused survey of lands that bring experts and enthusiasts together to help generate a list of what lives there.\niNaturalist is a free platform that allows you to get real time feedback on what organisms you are seeing and contribute them to the scientific community.\n\nWe will begin with an overview of what we know about the land from a historical and biodiversity perspective and then will spend about 3 hrs exploring and documenting the property with iNaturalist. A wrap up session will allow us to review what we discovered\, get final identifications on things we saw and discuss what we learned. When you go into the land with a mission to see diversity\, you will always notice more\, and being in the land with other people will help expand the way you see. \nThe goal is not only to deliver a data set of what lives in the Fibershed Watershed\, but to give you tools to see more diversity on any foray into the world. \n\nSpecial Note! Uploaded observations from this Bioblitz will contribute to the national\, annual City Nature Challenge (April 25-28) for the San Francisco Bay Area region! To learn more\, check out:\n\nCityNatureChallenge.org – and – iNaturalist: 2025 City Nature Challenge\, San Francisco Bay Area\n\n\n\nInstructor Bio:\nDamon Tighe is a biotechnologist based in the San Francisco East Bay who trains teachers on bringing in cutting edge biotechnology like DNA sequencing\, protein analysis\, etc into classrooms across the western US. He moonlights as a naturalist with a focus on fungi and community science. He has over 90k observations on iNaturalist and more than 1\,000 of those are fungi that are sequenced which are helping us to understand the unnamed fungal biodiversity in California. \nIG: @damontighe\niNaturalist: damontighe \nPack List (required): \n\nhiking water bottle\, packed trail lunch\, and snacks\nhat and sunscreen\ncomfortable shoes to hike in\nday-hike size backpack\ncamera for photographing organisms (including the miniscule\, large\, and distantly visible)\nbinoculars\nhiking water bottle and snacks\nsun-protective clothing\nlightweight warm jacket if it gets cold\n\nPack List (advised): \n\nsun-protective clothing\nlightweight warm jacket if it gets cold\nbinoculars\nadditional personal snacks\, lunch\, and beverages\nany spare batteries\, memory cards\, etc for cameras\noptional: computer or method of uploading photos while we review and add our image data to iNaturalist together during the last hour (wifi is available on site)\n\nThis event will predominantly take place outdoors and on foot during the first 3 hours. There will be a combination of hiking both on and off trail\, however there will be many opportunities to pause during the hike while observing the different organisms we find. \nWe recommend packing light for the hike for the sake of carrying comfort and ease–attendees will be able to store their additional items in the classroom while we are on foot. \nRegister Now\n
