Fibreshed develops place-based regional fibre and natural dye systems that generate necessary forms of material culture\, while simultaneously regenerating lost carbon stocks in our soils and providing meaningful livelihoods. Fibershed founder Rebecca Burgess has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans within the Northern California fibreshed and is piloting a regenerative fibre systems model at a community scale. Rebecca will talk about starting a fibreshed and discuss her involvement with Fibreshed Field School\, a program led by Emily Smith and run by the Shumka Centre for Creative Entrepreneurship.

She is the chief curator of MelaninASS (Melanin and Sustainable Style) – a blog platform amplifying the voices of BIPOC across sustainable fashion\, beauty\, and wellness spaces. She is also the Co-Founder of Sustainable Brooklyn\, an organization working to bridge the gap between the sustainability movement and targeted communities using tailored high-low approaches through BIPOC focused events & resource development. \nRebecca Burgess\, M.ed\, is the Executive Director of Fibershed\, Chair of the Board for Carbon Cycle Institute\, and the author of Harvesting Color. She is a vocationally trained weaver and natural dyer. She has over a decade of experience writing and implementing hands-on curricula that focus on the intersection of restoration ecology and fiber systems. Burgess has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans in the Northern California Fibershed to pilot an innovative fiber systems model at the community scale. We’ll witness firsthand a flock of sheep grazing for fuel reduction and soil-building at this beautiful retreat center in the hills of Anderson Valley. Both days of learning will be spent outdoors. \nThis workshop will explore opportunities to invest in the resilience of land\, using livestock as a vehicle for soil-building. SUMMARY:2021 Fibershed Wool & Fine Fiber Symposium

DESCRIPTION:Dear handspinners\, knitters\, fiber producers and vendors\, \nWe invite you to participate in Spinners’ Day on the Farm.  This event is intended to promote\, showcase\, and sell fiber\, fiber arts\, and related crafts\, produced by farmers in Sonoma County and other vendors. \nWyammy Ranch is a picturesque 60+ year old ranch specializing in Romney and Wensleydale sheep\, perched on a hilltop  in the coastal hills near Occidental\, just 7 miles west of Sebastopol. \nCome relax\, spin\, visit with old and new friends\, and find that perfect fiber to create your next work of art.    \nThis year we will not be doing a pot-luck lunch.  Please bring your own food. \nWe will also require that all attendees be vaccinated for Covid\, with one booster\,  for the safety and peace of mind of all. \nThis is an entirely outdoor event. You will be parking in my riding arena\, with overflow parking in a pasture. Our gathering area is my large\, tree-shaded front yard. \nDirections:  Occidental can be reached from Sebastopol on Bodega Hwy\, to Bohemian Hwy in Freestone\, to town\,  Or by taking Occidental Road all the way from Santa Rosa\, or by Graton Rd  from the town of Graton. \nOn entering Occidental\, take Bittner Rd from the South-West corner of town.  Go 1 mile. \nAt the big green “ Wyammy Ranch 15600 “ sign\, turn right and go to the top  of the hill.  Just after the road turns to gravel\, the riding arena and parking will be on the right.  We will  ferry your equipment up to the meeting place.  The road up to the ranch is one lane.  Please plan to arrive between 10-11 so as not to meet traffic coming down. \nVendors will come between 8:00-9:30 and will park by the barn\, near their spaces. \nHandicapped parking will need to be pre-arranged. \nPlease leave your dogs at home. DESCRIPTION:Fibershed is hosting a Swap – Mend – Furoshiki community event! \nWe’re launching our Clothing Swap Closet\, open to everyone to trade their natural fiber garments and accessories\, and to mix up your closets and keep your textiles circulating amongst our community! All items must be natural fiber materials\, and in clean and good condition. \nOur Mending Bar will also be open with local mending teachers\, Heidi Iverson of Honey Folk Clothing and Allison Reilly. You will learn how to transform your favorite moth-damaged\, torn\, or distressed garments\, homewares\, and other textiles by visibly mending and patching\, and developing your own stitch patterns! Whether you’re new to repairing your clothes or an avid mender\, we invite you to join us. The Mending Bar will be open throughout the event\, and you can hop in at any time. \nWe will also be hosting Furoshiki workshops with Sachiko Knappman\, to learn the art of Japanese fabric wrapping – for gifts and everyday carry. Furoshiki workshops will begin on the hour: 11a\, 12p\, 1p\, 2p. You can join any workshop. \nThis is a family-friendly event. SUMMARY:Cancelled: Aboubakar Fofana Textiles Trunk Show
DESCRIPTION:We deeply regret that this trunk show has been canceled. We will be following up soon with ways to support Aboubakar’s work.\nBorn in Mali and raised in France\, Aboubakar Fofana is a multidisciplinary artist and designer whose working mediums include calligraphy\, textiles and natural dyes. He is known for his work in reinvigorating and redefining West African indigo dyeing techniques\, and much of his focus is devoted to the preservation and reinterpretation of traditional West African textile and natural dyeing techniques and materials. \nFofana’s work stems from a profound spiritual belief that nature is divine and that through respecting this divinity we can understand the immense and sacred universe. His raw materials come from the natural world\, and his working practice revolves around the cycles of nature\, the themes of birth\, decay and change\, and the impermanence of these materials. He sees the conception and realization of this work as a form of spiritual practice which is shared with his audience. \nFofana is currently deeply involved in creating a farm in conjunction with the local community in the district of Siby\, Mali\, in which the two types of indigenous West African indigo will be the centerpiece for a permaculture model based around local food\, medicine and dye plants. This project hopes to contribute to the rebirth of fermented indigo dyeing in Mali and beyond\, and represents his life’s greatest project to date. \n“For me\, the blue of indigo is symbolic of many things\, many deeply spiritual connections within my homeland. But it is also deeply symbolic of what colonialism has done to my region and my people\, and to lands and societies elsewhere. I can talk about blue as a colour\, as a shade\, as an idea\, as a spiritual practice. Every choice we make when wearing\, caring and consuming elicits a direct environmental\, economic\, and human response. In this year’s Symposium you’ll hear from those working on critical issues of fossil fuel divestment from textiles and fashion\, garment workers’ rights\, and new laws aiming to internalize the costs of our textile ‘waste’ while catalyzing shifts in material choice and design.  We will also take stock of our regional fibershed economies– hearing from Fibershed Affiliates\, the Fibers Fund and efforts to bring climate benefitting farming and ranching incentives to the national scale.\n\n  \nThis will be a hybrid event\, and you may join us in person in Point Reyes or virtually.  A portion of our speakers will be presenting virtually as well as a few in person. DESCRIPTION:Create a “Vegetarian Sheepskin” Seat Pad\nSaturday\, December 9\, 2023 10:30-4:00 PT \nLearn how to use wet felting to create faux sheepskin pelts. In this class we will work on making seat pads but you will leave with the knowledge (and your pad and other materials) needed to create full size rugs\, scarves\, throws\, pet beds\, and anything else you might see a pelt used for. All materials will be provided\, including the wool\, so you can even say hi to the sheep you will be sitting on. \nAbility to stand at a table and do rolling pin type motions for an extended amount of time is necessary. This class will be outdoors so please dress accordingly and keep in mind that this process can be messy and wet. There will be time for a break so be sure to bring a lunch. \nTeacher: Siobhan Harlakenden is enthusiastic about all things wool. She is a delightful teacher and brings her interest in historical textile construction to her classes\, the latest of which was Medieval Distaff and Spindle Spinning at Lambtown 2023. \nWorkshop fee: $100\nMaterials fee: $66 \nThe materials fee includes all the wool you will need and the supplies that are used to create the faux sheepskin.
