SUMMARY:Documenting Diversity: A Bioblitz of the Fibershed Watershed ft Damon Tighe
DESCRIPTION:Participate in the national City Nature Challenge exploring the biodiversity within Point Reyes Station’s 1\,350 acre Black Mountain Ranch! \nDate\nApril 27\, 2025 \n10AM – 2 PM \nLocation\nFibershed Learning Center \n14000 Point Reyes – Petaluma Road Point Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \nAbout this event\nLearn about local plants\, animals\, fungi and insects while helping us all understand the diversity of organisms that share in Fibershed‘s watershed by participating in a BioBlitz using the iNaturalist platform. We will meet at the Fibershed Learning Center in Point Reyes Station for this opportunity to venture into a glimpse of the 1\,350 acre private\, wild land of Black Mountain Ranch where it is based. \n\nA BioBlitz is a focused survey of lands that bring experts and enthusiasts together to help generate a list of what lives there.\niNaturalist is a free platform that allows you to get real time feedback on what organisms you are seeing and contribute them to the scientific community.\n\nWe will begin with an overview of what we know about the land from a historical and biodiversity perspective and then will spend about 3 hrs exploring and documenting the property with iNaturalist. A wrap up session will allow us to review what we discovered\, get final identifications on things we saw and discuss what we learned. When you go into the land with a mission to see diversity\, you will always notice more\, and being in the land with other people will help expand the way you see. \nThe goal is not only to deliver a data set of what lives in the Fibershed Watershed\, but to give you tools to see more diversity on any foray into the world. \n\nSpecial Note! Uploaded observations from this Bioblitz will contribute to the national\, annual City Nature Challenge (April 25-28) for the San Francisco Bay Area region! To learn more\, check out:\n\nCityNatureChallenge.org – and – iNaturalist: 2025 City Nature Challenge\, San Francisco Bay Area\n\n\n\nInstructor Bio:\nDamon Tighe is a biotechnologist based in the San Francisco East Bay who trains teachers on bringing in cutting edge biotechnology like DNA sequencing\, protein analysis\, etc into classrooms across the western US. He moonlights as a naturalist with a focus on fungi and community science. He has over 90k observations on iNaturalist and more than 1\,000 of those are fungi that are sequenced which are helping us to understand the unnamed fungal biodiversity in California. \nIG: @damontighe\niNaturalist: damontighe \nPack List (required): \n\nhiking water bottle\, packed trail lunch\, and snacks\nhat and sunscreen\ncomfortable shoes to hike in\nday-hike size backpack\ncamera for photographing organisms (including the miniscule\, large\, and distantly visible)\nbinoculars\nhiking water bottle and snacks\nsun-protective clothing\nlightweight warm jacket if it gets cold\n\nPack List (advised): \n\nsun-protective clothing\nlightweight warm jacket if it gets cold\nbinoculars\nadditional personal snacks\, lunch\, and beverages\nany spare batteries\, memory cards\, etc for cameras\noptional: computer or method of uploading photos while we review and add our image data to iNaturalist together during the last hour (wifi is available on site)\n\nThis event will predominantly take place outdoors and on foot during the first 3 hours. There will be a combination of hiking both on and off trail\, however there will be many opportunities to pause during the hike while observing the different organisms we find. \nWe recommend packing light for the hike for the sake of carrying comfort and ease–attendees will be able to store their additional items in the classroom while we are on foot. \nRegister Now\n

Reconnect with inner sensibility\, creative embodiment\, and ecological awareness through the culturally rooted process of Batik. \nThis is a condensed version of Babaran Segaragunung’s long-standing residency program\, offered in a flexible format. For an in-depth learning experience\, register for both days. Attendees are also welcome to join for just the first day. \nNo batik experience is necessary. \nWorkshop Schedule \nDay One: Introduction to Batik and Technique \nLearn the foundations of batik using wax-resist dyeing with natural dyes\, exploring traditional motifs and design elements. This day introduces participants to the material\, tools\, and basic philosophy that guide this artistic tradition. \nDay Two: Intangible Knowledge and Creative Process \nDive deeper into the cultural and philosophical underpinnings of batik. Experience creative practices that involve movement\, inner reflection\, and symbolic design—drawing from the ancient Javanese worldview of Tribawana (the three realms of self\, nature\, and source of creativity). \nParticipants must bring: \n\nWear clothing that can get stained\nLap cloth (drips and spills)\nAny personal snacks\, lunch\, and beverages. Coffee and tea will be provided.\nA notebook and pen for note taking is encouraged.\nDrawing book and pencils (3B) in case you want to start to draw or prepare your personal symbol design.\nAll other materials will be provided.\n\nMaximum 16 students. \nSign up here

DESCRIPTION:The  Natural Fiber Fair is  located in the quaint college town of Arcata\,  September is a beautiful time of year to explore the North Coast. \nArcata is a lively arts community  bustling with returning college  students and the festive farmers market on the town plaza. Fall is the  perfect time for fiber artists to think about their winter projects.   The Natural Fiber Fair inspires us with new skills and beautiful fibers. \nEducation  is an important aspect of the Natural Fiber Fair.  Every hour there are  several demos and workshops to choose from.  Learn about basket  weaving\, natural dyeing\, spinning\, knitting\, felting and more! Our  vendors offer free demonstrations as well as hands-on workshops with a  small materials fee.  We have classroom space for longer\, more in-depth  workshops; pre-registration is encouraged for the in-depth workshops.   Along with the fabulous exhibits there is something for everyone. \nNatural  Fibers are our focus.  Vendors from northern California\, Oregon\, and elsewhere  bring fiber\, tools\, books\, finished products\, and much more.  The Fleece  Market features locally produced fibers and roving. \nMany of us  have come year after year and look forward to our special weekend set  aside for good company\, beautiful fibers\, and learning new things. \nRegister Now

Each garment is beautifully illustrated with hand-sketched botanic illustrations. \nPlease get your free tickets via Eventbrite to help assure you a spot! \nContact rhonda@fibershed.org for more question\, information or to volunteer!
