SUMMARY:Spinner's Day on the Farm at Wyammy Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Dear handspinners\, knitters\, fiber producers and vendors\, \nWe invite you to participate in Spinners’ Day on the Farm.  This event is intended to promote\, showcase\, and sell fiber\, fiber arts\, and related crafts\, produced by farmers in Sonoma County and other vendors. \nWyammy Ranch is a picturesque 60+ year old ranch specializing in Romney and Wensleydale sheep\, perched on a hilltop  in the coastal hills near Occidental\, just 7 miles west of Sebastopol. \nCome relax\, spin\, visit with old and new friends\, and find that perfect fiber to create your next work of art.    \nThis year we will not be doing a pot-luck lunch.  Please bring your own food. \nWe will also require that all attendees be vaccinated for Covid\, with one booster\,  for the safety and peace of mind of all. \nThis is an entirely outdoor event. You will be parking in my riding arena\, with overflow parking in a pasture. Our gathering area is my large\, tree-shaded front yard. \nDirections:  Occidental can be reached from Sebastopol on Bodega Hwy\, to Bohemian Hwy in Freestone\, to town\,  Or by taking Occidental Road all the way from Santa Rosa\, or by Graton Rd  from the town of Graton. \nOn entering Occidental\, take Bittner Rd from the South-West corner of town.  Go 1 mile. \nAt the big green “ Wyammy Ranch 15600 “ sign\, turn right and go to the top  of the hill.  Just after the road turns to gravel\, the riding arena and parking will be on the right.  We will  ferry your equipment up to the meeting place.  The road up to the ranch is one lane.  Please plan to arrive between 10-11 so as not to meet traffic coming down. \nVendors will come between 8:00-9:30 and will park by the barn\, near their spaces. \nHandicapped parking will need to be pre-arranged. \nPlease leave your dogs at home. My sheep\, Guardian dog and Border collies thank you. \nIf you want to vend\, please call ahead to reserve a space: 707 874-3374

SUMMARY:2021 Fibershed Wool & Fine Fiber Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Register Here \nThis year’s symposium will begin with a conversation between those living and working to produce our global demand for textiles and those that receive the mounds of material that is discarded once clothing is deemed “uninteresting” or damaged.  We’ll hear from members of the OR Foundation Community and the Garment Worker Center\, who will share the consequences that they personally and professionally experience due to current rates of production within the fashion industry.  \nThe day will include a presentation by Local Futures\, an organization founded on the work to uplift place-based regional economies; including efforts to ‘expose the big picture’ and ‘unite and connect’ farmers\, mainstreet business owners\, indigenous communities and everyone in between.  We will hear from artist and textile reuse maker Karen Hampton who’s art and life is shaped by connection to her ancestry– a lineage versed in care and regard for soil\, textiles and dyes.   \nThe second half of our day will focus on our region’s water and agriculture.  With rapid changes in weather patterns\, our soil based systems from which we rely upon for material culture are undergoing transitions.  We will hear from hydrologists\, farmers\, those leading people powered solutions\, and researchers in two panel discussions focused on realities and solutions of California water and the growing agroforestry movement.  We will hear lightning talks from Fibershed Producer members focused on stories of how they are implementing carbon farming practices and enhancing biodiversity and soil carbon within their working landscapes. \nThe Fibershed Marketplace Showcase will feature a range of the region’s soil-to-soil textiles and will highlight our region’s farmers\, artisans\, weavers\, felters\, knitters\, mills and natural dyers who will be offering freshly farmed and ranched goods from our range and cropland systems. \n  \nSchedule: \n9-9:15am: Opening Remarks \n9:15-10:15am: Conversation between a member of Kantamanto Market and the Garment Worker Center \n10:15-11:15am: Presentation by Anja Lynbaeck from Local Futures \n11:15-11:20am: Short Break \n11:20-11:45am: Presentation with Karen Hampton & Conversation Between Karen Hampton and Teju Adisa-Farrar \n11:45-1:15pm: Agroforestry Panel with Sonja Brodt\, Liz Carlisle\, Guido Frosini\, Jesse Smith facilitated by Mike Conover \n1:15-1:45pm: Fibershed Marketplace Showcase \n1:45-1:50pm: Short Break \n1:50-2:30pm: Lightning Talks with Marcia Barinaga\, John Bailey\, Kelli Dunaj\, Sarah Keiser \n2:30-4pm: Water Systems Panel with Andy Fisher\, Regina Hirsch\, Dennis Hutson\, Brad Lancaster \nRegister Here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/183037559267 \nFor speaker bios\, visit our 2021 Symposium page: fibershed.org/2021-wool-fine-fiber-symposium \nWeaving Voices illustration by Laurie Sawyer

SUMMARY:Grazing Livestock for Soil Health\, Biodiversity\, and Productivity - Two Day
DESCRIPTION:Fire season is just around the corner\, and managed grazing offers an elegant system that builds soil health and resilience to wildfires. \nAbout this Event\nAt this workshop\, we’ll hear from two leading practitioners in the field of regenerative grazing. We’ll witness firsthand a flock of sheep grazing for fuel reduction and soil-building at this beautiful retreat center in the hills of Anderson Valley. Both days of learning will be spent outdoors. \nThis workshop will explore opportunities to invest in the resilience of land\, using livestock as a vehicle for soil-building. We’ll learn how planned grazing and monitoring can build drought and fire resilience\, biodiversity\, soil carbon and increase rainfall effectiveness. \nWe will also be introduced to a framework for decision-making and planning processes developed by Allan Savory\, which helps individuals manage the complexity of the land\, human\, and economic resources they manage more effectively. \nWho is this for? This workshop is for anyone wanting to improve current land management and create resilience in our life support system for generations to come. This includes city dwellers who wish to be more connected to land\, young agrarians\, and rural landowners or ranch managers who wish to understand how to use livestock to improve the health of their land rather than degrade it. \nFor additional information and registration click here.

SUMMARY:The Arc of Texture and Color Derived from a Regional Land Base
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the agro-ecological and social cultural depth of this strategic geography has become the life’s work of presenter\, Rebecca Burgess. In this presentation\, Burgess will expand on her personal work to live within the Fibershed that she calls home and will share select agro-cultural narratives from Fibershed landscapes emerging in all corners of the world. \nThe processes and phases responsible for getting us dressed each day produce more carbon and greenhouse gas emissions than international and maritime shipping combined. The pace of production and consumption has accelerated so quickly since the beginning of the 21st century\, that if we look at the global scale of waste streams— one garbage truck of textiles goes into the landfill or incinerator every second. \nOur clothes need not come at the cost of human and planetary health and wellbeing. Through the work to both slow down our consumption and simultaneously re-connect to the life giving textile resources within a strategic geography we can begin to re-sensitize our selves to the working landscapes and processes that generate our second skin. The word that has been coined to describe this strategic geography is known as a Fibershed. \nFibersheds are landscapes that produce an arc of color and texture that define the aesthetic foundation of a textile. The concept of ‘sheds’ as applied to material culture is an ancient one—before colonization and then fossil carbon usage were deployed to speed up the movement and concentration of material resources into centralized supply chains—humans had developed well honed and advanced place-based systems for the procurement of food\, fiber\, flora and fuel. \nIn North Central California 3.1 million pounds of wool and 250 million pounds of cotton\, a smattering of emerging indigo\, hemp and flax growers and a host of small mills\, felters\, knitters\, weavers\, designers and cut & sewers define the growing and processing of our region’s Fibershed. \nRebecca Burgess is the Executive Director of the 501c3 non-profit organization\, Fibershed. The organization’s mission is to develop regional fiber systems that build soil and protect the health of our biosphere. \nTicket Information – Admission: Free for current members of the Textile Arts Council; $5 for students and members of FAMSF; $10 General Admission. Tickets available the morning of the lecture only. Cash or checks accepted at the auditorium doors\, credit cards accepted at the Visitor’s desk. Museum admission not required to attend lecture.
