DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make cordage using invasive plants and create your own coiled basket\nThis workshop is part one of a two-day weekend series on invasive plant basketry. Register for both classes\, or for an individual class. \nDate\nSaturday\, June 28 \n10am – 4pm PDT \nAbout the Class\nSpend the day with instructor Julia Han at the Fibershed Learning Center learning to identify fiber plants commonly found in California\, and exploring how some of these can be foraged and transformed into beautiful and functional objects. \nWe’ll begin with a guided walk to explore a variety of native and non-native/invasive plants growing nearby\, discussing how to harvest them responsibly and prepare them for use. Back in the workshop\, you’ll learn tips on working with plant fibers and practice foundational basketry techniques including cordage-making and coiling. You’ll use these skills to create your own coiled basket using invasive plants. \nThis beginner-friendly workshop offers a hands-on introduction to natural fiber craft and working with foraged materials. Take this as a standalone workshop\, or pair it with Day 2 to deepen your skills. \nFull Weekend Description for Day 1 & 2:\nJoin us for a two-day\, hands-on experience of identifying\, foraging\, and transforming common invasive grasses and other plants into beautiful and functional objects using essential basketry techniques. After these beginner-friendly workshops\, you’ll leave with your own handmade works and the skills to continue working with foraged materials on your own. Along the way\, we’ll touch on the ecological role of invasive species and how we can make use of these abundant materials that are often overlooked. \nEach day will begin with a walk through the Fibershed property\, where we’ll observe and identify plants suitable for fiber and other uses. Along the way\, we’ll discuss ethnobotanical uses\, sustainable harvesting practices\, and what to look for in strong\, flexible materials. DESCRIPTION:Learn the history\, tools\, and techniques of hat-making while crafting your own felt hat—guided by hands-on experience and exploration \nDate\nSaturday \nOctober 18 & October 19\, 2025 \n10am – 4pm PDT \nLocation\nFibershed Learning Center \n14000 Point Reyes – Petaluma Road \nPoint Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \nAbout the Event\nOver this intensive two-day introductory course\, students will be introduced to the history\, tools\, materials\, and basic technique of professional hat making\, and craft their own felt hat using the techniques learned in class. \nWe will start with a brief look into the history of the hat industry\, unpack some of the exploits the industry has benefited from\, and look at how this industry has shaped the western world that provides context for where we are today. \nTOOLS\nMuch of hatmaking comes down to the rare and specialized tools that we use. Most people have very little knowledge of all the equipment required for fine hat making\, let alone the names and terminology for all of it. \nStudents will be introduced to a wide selection of tools\, from your basic set of hatmaking tools\, many of which are antiques dating back over 100 years\, to contemporary tools hand-designed and fabricated by the instructor. \nSelect hat-making tools students will learn about include: \n\nHat Blocks\nBrim Flanges\nTolakers\nPull Downs and Push Downs\nIrons\nShackles\nSteam Boilers\nBand Blocks\nStretchers\nPouncing Sponges\n\nParticipants should bring: \n\n*Attendees must wear closed-toe shoes*\nAny personal snacks\, lunch\, and beverages.
