SUMMARY:'Designing for Resilient & Healthy Ecosystems in Our Region' Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The following webinar is part of our Speaker Series for our “Borrowed from the Soil” Design Challenge. The event is open to all designers and the general public. \nAre you a designer or textile producer who wants to better understand how you can connect with regional fiber and dye producers to improve the ecosystem impact of your textile operations? \nDo you want to learn more about how regional\, nature fiber and dye farming systems can benefit ecosystem health in measurable and tangible ways? \nThis webinar will cover an introduction to Climate Beneficial(TM) farming systems for wool and cotton in California\, including visions for a more resilient future for these fibers\, and a discussion about sourcing natural dyes for textile and garment production to improve ecosystem health. \nThree industry experts will share their work and perspectives: Lani Estill (rancher and artisan of Lani’s Lana)\, Lauren Tucker\, and Kathy Hattori (of Botanical Colors). \nModerated by Heather Podoll of Fibershed

SUMMARY:The Colonial Climate Crisis: Sustainable Fashion Edition
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special online lecture with Dominique Drakeford!\nCalling our current socio-ecological crisis “global warming” or “climate change” is insufficient. We are experiencing a Colonial Climate Crisis. This term\, coined by our colleague Dominique Drakeford\, is an avenue to discuss urgent issues within the sustainability movement. \nJoin us on April 3 for a special online lecture by Dominique to explore the intersections of sustainability\, colonization\, the climate crisis\, and fashion systems. This special introductory lecture is a prerequisite to learning about the root issues of unsustainability and the ecosystem that keeps that engine well-oiled and active. \nLanguage is a foundational pillar in how we design equitable systems\, planting the seed that nurtures an intolerance for toxic Western European discourse on sustainability and environmentalism — especially in one of the most complex\, impressionable\, and profitable industries: FASHION. It’s time to decolonize the sustainability and fashion lexicon from a cultural vantage point. \nDominique Drakeford is a mother\, non-traditional educator\, writer\, independent researcher\, and creative storyteller that has been a leader in reimagining sustainability for the past 15+ years | Co-founder Sustainable Brooklyn. Learn more about her here.

SUMMARY:One Acre Exchange Industrial Hemp Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The creation of a satellite regulatory environment for industrial hemp through the passage of the 2014 Farm Bill led to a cobbling of black\, white\, and grey procedures for the procurement and cultivation of industrial hemp seed. Hemp seed\, when it is acquired\, is so far an unpredictable performer across a wide variety of soil types and cultivation methods. When hemp seed is acquired\, cultivated\, and harvested successfully\, markets are difficult to find. What do we make of this\, and what can we know about the future of industrial hemp in our farms and fields? Synthesizing lessons learned from our four years of research and practice\, this webinar will focus on the broader economy and recent historical context of industrial hemp production\, touching on the interconnections between issues of regulatory compliance\, seed acquisition\, and supply chain development. \n  \nTo register for the webinar on April 29\, 11 am PST\, click the link here.
