SUMMARY:Design Your Own Backstrap Loom with Mayan Master Weaver Doña Lidia
DESCRIPTION:A warping workshop for students ready to create their own Mayan backstrap loom \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center\, in Point Reyes\, CA\, and build your own loom in the style of the Mayan brocade backstrap looms\, from start to finish. \nDoña Lidia de Lopez’s brocade looms are a work of art\, handmade in the ancestral style of her hometown of San Antonio Aguas Calientes\, Sacatepequez\, Guatemala. Assembled using a combination of bold\, colorful cotton and multiple heddles\, the loom is prepared for single and double-sided brocade\, the latter a unique style particular to her hometown. \nThrough her delicate and vibrant weaving\, Doña Lidia holds and uplifts her heritage\, creating pieces that combine story\, environment\, ancestral geometry\, and fiber art. Teaching her textile art\, she feels\, is a spiritual calling to keep her tradition alive. \nDoña Lidia’s güipiles\, belts\, and other textiles are currently exhibited at the 2023 International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. Previously\, her art has been in exhibitions around the world including: Germany\, Canada\, France\, Italy\, Mexico\, Japan\, and the United States. She has taught weaving throughout the States at several universities. She is currently a recipient of a 2023 Weave a Real Peace grant. \nDoña Lidia lives in San Antonio Aguas Calientes\, Guatemala\, with her family\, and has a vendor space at El Mercadito Artesanias adjacent to the plaza in Antigua\, Guatemala. We are excited to welcome her as she visits and shares her traditional craft. \n\nOutline of the Workshop: \nIn this class\, participants will design and assemble their own loom by exploring a palette of colors and making their own customized cotton warp that will be ready to weave into a belt. Participants will attach the warp to end rods and shed rods\, setup the heddles\, roll a bobbin\, and lay out their first rows on their brocade loom to secure the loom. All pieces for the loom are included in a material packet for each student including: rods\, shed rods\, batten\, tenter\, backstrap\, tie-rope\, bobbin\, brocade pick\, and colorful fibers. Participants will leave the class knowing how to prepare and assemble their own Mayan backstrap loom for future weaving projects. \nDoña Lidia will be assisted in this workshop by two weavers\, Sari Monroy Solis and her son Nathaniel. The day after\, August 6\, Doña Lidia will be a guest assistant in Sari and Nathaniel’s beginning backstrap weaving class at Fibershed. \nNote: It is recommended that participants in the August 5 “Design Your Own Backstrap Loom” sign up for a backstrap weaving class at Fibershed on either August 6 or September 23 (or were enrolled in June) since this workshop will be focused on the design and assembly of the loom. \nEnroll Here: eventbrite.com/e/670474175307 \n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 7 days before the event. SUMMARY:Weaving on a Mayan Backstrap Loom with Sari Monroy Solís
DESCRIPTION:Learn to weave on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home \nThe backstrap loom goes back thousands of years and is one of the oldest known tools in the world. It evolved in several places\, including the Western highlands of Guatemala. Mayan weavers continue to make traditional clothing for everyday use and for the textile market using this traditional loom. \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will learning this ancient skill from Sari Monroy Solís\, whose paternal family comes from the Valle de Panchoy area of Sacatepequez\, Guatemala (now called Antigua and San Antonio Aguas Calientes). To connect to her Kaqchikel community and elders\, Sari weaves using the backstrap loom and teaches this art to others\, especially fellow diaspora. \nThe class will focus on the traditional Mayan backstrap loom. You will learn on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home. The class will begin by learning how the body connects to the loom\, the parts of the loom\, and how to start plain weaving. Once comfortable with plain weaving\, you will learn how to do single-side brocade using common motifs. You will learn the names and origins of these motifs and how to design your own. \nReady to start weaving? Traditional weaving\, restoring güipiles\, and Mayan embroidery are some of the ways she maintains her connection to her community of elders in Guatemala. Foraging\, natural dyes\, and plant medicine are some of the ways she honors her maternal Indigenous lineage in Veracruz. She is also an avid mender\, knitter\, and upcycler of fabrics. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, and learn how to make your own yarn using a drop spindle with Alisha Bright of Fiber Circle Studio. \nIn this 4 hour class\, students will get to practice making a single ply yarn\, and learn how to take their yarn off the spindle\, into a skein and prep for knitting\, weaving or crocheting. \nThis is a great entry and foundation building for learning to spin on a wheel! \nClass size: 10 students \nPlease bring: Personal snacks\, lunch and beverages (a selection of teas will be served on site). The moment she embarked on her first project\, she realized that this is what she was made for. \nShe became involved with a few of the local yarn shops and wandered off to live on a farm for a few months where she learned about fiber processing\, spinning\, and self-sustainability. Upon her return to Sonoma County\, she began the Master’s Hand Knitting Program through TKGA\, and resumed teaching knitting classes at her local yarn shop.
