SUMMARY:Borrowed from the Soil: Design Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A farm-to-closet design exhibition\n\nDo your clothes help or harm?\nToday’s clothing relies on transnational supply chains\, petroleum-based materials\, and land and labor exploitation. But what if your clothing could build ecosystem and community resilience\, while regenerating healthy soil and land? \nThe Borrowed from the Soil exhibition explores a future vision where the way we produce and use one of our most basic human necessities – clothing — can support the longevity and health of our local ecosystems and communities. Explore the process behind the production of locally-grown and made clothing that connects you to California farms\, mills and designers. This exhibition follows the journey from cotton and flax fields to sheep ranches and alpaca farms through the transformations of raw materials into beautiful textiles\, embedding into the design process an understanding of how these materials can be healthfully returned back into our soils. We invite you to help build a collective understanding on the interconnectedness between material\, design\, and consumer choices\, and the land and people whom these choices impact. \n\nGENERAL INFO: Please read carefully \nLocation: Buddha Barn (down the road from Fibershed Learning Center) — 13201 Pt. Reyes – Petaluma Rd\, Point Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \nTickets: Tickets are sold through our pre-sale and at the door\, for $10. All proceeds go to Fibershed programs. Tickets are non-refundable. Tickets are sold by a 1-hour arrival time slot. (Please try your best to arrive during this timeframe\, but as long as you arrive on the day noted on your ticket\, your ticket is valid.) \nSchedule: \n\nFriday\, November 10\, 1-3p — Soft Opening/ in conjunction with our annual Symposium (Separate registration here)\nSaturday\, November 11\, 11-2p — Reception (11-1p Meet the Makers)\nSunday\, November 12\, 11-3p\nMonday\, November 13\, 11-3p\nTuesday\, November 14 \, 11-3\nWednesday\, November 15 — School Visits (If you are interested in organizing a visit for your class\, please email heather@fibershed.org. See Educator Section below.)\nThursday\, November 16 — School Visits (Update: This day is fully booked for school visits)\n\n\nMAKERS: \nAll of the featured designers in the exhibition are either participating in Fibershed’s year-long design challenge or a design student in one of our partner Design School programs. Each maker is exploring how their design choices can embed longevity\, compostability\, and respect for the soil while using local natural fibers grown on Climate Beneficial farms and ranches. \nThe exhibition will also feature work by the talented\, Petaluma-based photographer — Paige Green\, along with work by California-based fiber sculpturist Emma Doven.

SUMMARY:2023 Fibershed Symposium: Relationships of Change
DESCRIPTION:2023 Wool & Fine Fiber Symposium\nRelationships of Change\n\n \n“Relationships of Change” will explore the interdependence of people\, policy\, and materials that are necessary for transforming our soil-to-skin system. Every choice we make when wearing\, caring and consuming elicits a direct environmental\, economic\, and human response. In this year’s Symposium you’ll hear from those working on critical issues of fossil fuel divestment from textiles and fashion\, garment workers’ rights\, and new laws aiming to internalize the costs of our textile ‘waste’ while catalyzing shifts in material choice and design.  We will also take stock of our regional fibershed economies– hearing from Fibershed Affiliates\, the Fibers Fund and efforts to bring climate benefitting farming and ranching incentives to the national scale.\n\n  \nThis will be a hybrid event\, and you may join us in person in Point Reyes or virtually.  A portion of our speakers will be presenting virtually as well as a few in person. In person attendees will enjoy the 4 hour event in a casual cafe atmosphere with a special coffee and tea service.\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:The Art and Surprise of Plying with Mimi Luebbermann and Marlie de Swart
DESCRIPTION:Come along for a captivating day of artistic exploration and delightful surprises as we dive into the world of plying! Join Mimi Luebbermann and Marlie de Swart\, at Windrush Farm\, and explore the magic of plying yarn! Learn to create unique and textured yarns\, strengthen single-ply yarns\, and introduce colors and textures during plying. This class will cover frosting\, insertions\, color plying\, cables\, and many other effects that are part of the creative world of plying. \nAll materials are included. \nClass Schedule: \n\nSaturday\, November 11\, 1:00pm – 4:00pm\n\nLocation: Windrush Farm\, 2263 Chileno Valley Road\, Petaluma\, CA 94952. \nPlease bring: Personal snacks and beverages. Windrush Farm is in a rural location outside Petaluma. The farm is located on flat but uneven terrain (please bring sturdy shoes). \nRegistration and Information: eventbrite.com/e/694441070937 \n\nAbout the Instructors: \nMarlie de Swart learned to spin as a young child at her mother’s knee in Holland\, and she has been doing it ever since. For the last twenty-two years\, she has been teaching spinning at Windrush Farm Fiber School in the Chileno Valley. Her book “Knitting Woolscapes\, Designs Inspired by Coastal Marin Wool” has many sweater patterns developed to be made with hand-spun yarn. She is one of the first board members of Fibershed and\, until recently\, owned and operated the Black Mountain Weavers Store (an artist cooperative) in Point Reyes Station. Marlie’s passion is everything fiber\, especially local fiber. \nMimi Luebbermann moved to Chileno Valley in 1995 with the dream of living quietly on a farm. Instead\, she ended up crazy about fiber and determined to create a fiber farm. Now\, sheep\, alpacas\, llamas\, goats\, and rabbits all contribute to the Windrush Farm yarns. As a dedicated spinner\, she works to educate people about the connection between fiber animals and yarn\, through school field trips\, her farmers market booth\, private tours\, and spinning classes to meet the animals and learn the process of transforming fleece to yarn. It is an endlessly fascinating life. \nInstagram: @windrushfarmpetaluma \nWeb: windrushfarm.wordpress.com \n\nTuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends:\nFibershed is offering one to two scholarships to most workshops. In addition to scholarships for tuition\, we are offering a limited number of stipends for transportation and/or childcare. If you would not otherwise be able to attend\, and would like to be considered as a scholarship and/or stipend recipient\, please answer a few brief questions on this Google Form. Responses will be reviewed by Learning Center staff and kept strictly confidential. \n\nCancellation Policy: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) are available up to 7 days before the event. If you cancel after 7 days before the event we can only offer a refund (minus Eventbrite fees) if we are able to fill your space from the waitlist. Otherwise\, there will be no refunds or transfers.

SUMMARY:Locavore Wonderland - Berkeley Farmers Markets
DESCRIPTION:The farmers’ market is not just a place for groceries: it’s a great place to find gifts! Preserves\, aged balsamic vinegar\, locally roasted coffee\, hot sauce\, fair trade chocolate\, and local honey are great gifts available all year round. Over the month of December\, join us at the farmers’ market for a holiday gifting series featuring weekly pop-up vendors selling even more gifts for the foodies in your lives—plus handmade jewelry\, woodwork\, soaps & body care\, pottery\, and other handmade goods. \nThe Berkeley Farmers’ Markets are open-air marketplaces where California farmers bring fresh\, locally-grown produce and farm-processed foods to sell directly to consumers. Our markets feature fruits\, vegetables\, nuts\, baked goods\, jams and preserves\, juices\, olive oils\, meat\, cheese\, prepared foods\, and flowers. We are committed to supporting small-scale farmers who practice sustainable agriculture. \nShopping at a farmers market is a wholly unique experience where farmers\, local artisans and shoppers get to know each other\, do business\, and help each other. When you shop at the farmers’ market\, you shop local\, you shop sustainable\, and you shop community. \nIt can be hard to leave the house in the winter season\, especially when your shopping can be as little as a click away. But the wintertime farmers’ market is a special experience worth savoring. Things are a little slower. There’s more time to connect with your vendors. \nOur wintertime Pop-up Gifting Series will feature even more vendors with unique products that tell the story of the shop-local movement. Right at the farmers’ market\, the same place you can buy ingredients for your family dinner\, you can purchase a hand-crafted gift from the person who made it. \nBundle up and slow down this winter season. Take the time to enjoy the thriving community that sustains the slow food movement. Shop local for your holiday gifts at the farmers’ market\, and you may find that the real gift is the experience. \nAbout Ecology Center \nFounded in 1969\, the Ecology Center is a nonprofit organization located in Berkeley\, California that focuses on improving the health and the environmental impacts of urban residents. DESCRIPTION:Create a “Vegetarian Sheepskin” Seat Pad\nSaturday\, December 9\, 2023 10:30-4:00 PT \nLearn how to use wet felting to create faux sheepskin pelts. In this class we will work on making seat pads but you will leave with the knowledge (and your pad and other materials) needed to create full size rugs\, scarves\, throws\, pet beds\, and anything else you might see a pelt used for. All materials will be provided\, including the wool\, so you can even say hi to the sheep you will be sitting on. \nAbility to stand at a table and do rolling pin type motions for an extended amount of time is necessary. This class will be outdoors so please dress accordingly and keep in mind that this process can be messy and wet. There will be time for a break so be sure to bring a lunch. \nTeacher: Siobhan Harlakenden is enthusiastic about all things wool. She is a delightful teacher and brings her interest in historical textile construction to her classes\, the latest of which was Medieval Distaff and Spindle Spinning at Lambtown 2023. \nWorkshop fee: $100\nMaterials fee: $66 \nThe materials fee includes all the wool you will need and the supplies that are used to create the faux sheepskin. You will be able to reuse some of those supplies for your next project at home. \nSign Up Here\nContact \nRobin Lynde\nMeridian Jacobs\n707-688-3493\nEmail: robin@meridianjacobs.com OR meridianjacobs7811@gmail.com\nBlog: www.meridianjacobs.com/meridian-jacobs-blog AND\nhttps://meridianjacobs.wordpress.com \nLocation \n7811 N.
