DESCRIPTION:Tapestry Weaving Class \nApril 5-6\, 2019 at Warner Mountain Weavers in Cedarville\, California. \n  \nWe are excited to be offering a Tapestry Weaving class at Warner Mountain Weavers in Cedarville\, CA. This one time class will be taught by Keyaira Terry. Keyaira will be traveling up from the Bay Area just to teach this class. She makes gorgeous tapestries and has been using Lani’s Lana Fine Rambouillet Wool in some of her pieces. \n  \nYou will complete a Woven Tapestry Wall Hanging to take home during the two-day class. Most materials\, a teaching fee\, and the loom rental are included in the price. Loom rental fees will not be waived. All students need to use the same loom to ensure that Keyaira can teach everyone consistently. You will need to provide 3-4 skeins of thick (the thicker the better) yarn. SUMMARY:Tule Berry-Gathering Basket Workshop with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:~This workshop is full. ~ Click the “Register Now” here to join the waitlist. \n  \nEnjoy a delightful day full of hands-on learning in Heron Hall and around the peaceful Laguna Environmental Center grounds with master weaver\, Charlie Kennard. Using tule\, (a giant species of sedge native to the Laguna and freshwater marshes all over North America)\, we will weave an Owens Valley Paiute-style scoop-shaped basket. This basket was used for gathering berries and for storing honey-dew collected from the leaves of common reed. Several unusual weaving techniques will be practiced during this workshop. \n  \nPrevious experience with twining is recommended. Suitable for adults and teenagers. All basket-making materials are included in the registration fee. Participants bring their own lunch. Hot drinks and snacks are provided throughout the day. \n  \nCharlie Kennard of San Anselmo is a long-time basket weaver and student of California Indian and other traditional basketry techniques of the world. He teaches throughout the Bay Area\, and in many schools and at teacher trainings. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the California Academy of Sciences\, the Bay Model in Sausalito\, and in the collection of the Lake County Museum. You can also visit a basketry plant garden Charlie has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross\, where he and friends have woven a basket 13 feet across. Charlie is active in native habitat restoration in Marin\, managing several projects for Friends of Corte Madera Creek Watershed.

DESCRIPTION:For the month of April\, weaving workshops will focus on pick-up techniques that can be used on three different weave structures: beiderwand\, mock damask\, and double weave. Pick-up is the process in which a warp pattern is picked up with a stick in order to weave patterns not otherwise possible on threading and tie-ups alone. When pick-up is used\, surface design possibilities are endless on just a simple four-shaft loom. \nAlthough there will be no loom set-up\, the weave structure\, threading\, and tie-up will be explained in detail at the beginning of class. Fibershed member\, Craig Wilkinson\, has provided our community with it’s first locally grown Japanese indigo vat. This is a unique indigo recipe as the color comes from composted indigo (sukumo) opposed to an extract or pigment. \n\nDuring the 90 minutes access to our special\, composted indigo vat\, you’ll get the chance to achieve different shades of blue through multiple dips. Some shibori supplies are available if you want to play with resist techniques. \n\nPlease note\, this is self-serve with minimal instruction. There will be a brief 15-minute introduction to the history of the vat\, how to properly use it and rinse your fabric. This is NOT a class.\n\nPlease weigh your items ahead of time to ensure it falls within the weight category. If you have more than the allotted amount\, you may sign up for 2 sessions. DESCRIPTION:Community Indigo Vat \nCome dip your hands (and fabric) in the sea of Sonoma County Blue! Fibershed member\, Craig Wilkinson\, has provided our community with it’s first locally grown Japanese indigo vat. This is a unique indigo recipe as the color comes from composted indigo (sukumo) opposed to an extract or pigment. \n\nDuring the 90 minutes access to our special\, composted indigo vat\, you’ll get the chance to achieve different shades of blue through multiple dips. Some shibori supplies are available if you want to play with resist techniques. \n\nPlease note\, this is self-serve with minimal instruction. There will be a brief 15-minute introduction to the history of the vat\, how to properly use it and rinse your fabric. This is NOT a class.\n\nPlease weigh your items ahead of time to ensure it falls within the weight category. If you have more than the allotted amount\, you may sign up for 2 sessions. Maximum weight doubles. \nInstructions for properly preparing your items for a successful dye experience will be e-mailed the week prior to your session. \n\nPlease wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little blue and bring a plastic bag to bring home your wet items. \n\nThe studio has aprons\, gloves\, tongs and a small supply of resist tools on hand.\n\nNitty Gritty Details:\nAccess to the vat is based on Registration. No walk-ins.\nTo ensure that each person has access to a lively\, fully colored vat\, there is a weight limit per person:\n\nYarn: 250 grams\nFabric: 500 grams\n\nIt is highly recommended to pre-soak wool overnight. DESCRIPTION:1 Day Weaving workshop: Learn how to create textile weaving motifs\, patterns\, and techniques on a small hand-held frame loom. \n  \nSamuel Bautista Lazo\, is a Zapotec (Benizaa) weaver from Teotitlán del Valle\, Oaxaca\, Mexico. He is visiting California to share his family’s weaving heritage\, the Indigenous way of life and cultural craft of the Zapotec people. Samuel will present interpretations of the woven knowledge encoded in the ancient symbols and patterns of Zapotec textile patterns\, natural dye/coloring methods and weaving techniques taught on a small frame loom. Students will create a small woven tapestry or hatband. Wool yarns and frame looms provided. Classes assisted and supported by Tiśina Parker. \n  \nLOCATION: Private Residence Host. SUMMARY:Twined Sweetgrass Basket with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:We will begin small twined baskets made with a diminutive relative of tule (Schoenoplectus americanus) known as “sweetgrass” among native weavers in the Pacific Northwest. As well as being fragrant\, it is strong and soft\, and lends itself to a variety of weaving strokes. \n  \nCharlie Kennard of San Anselmo is a long-time basket weaver and student of California Indian and other traditional basketry techniques. He has taught for the Point Reyes Field Institute\, East Bay Regional Parks Botanic Garden\, the Laguna Center in Santa Rosa and in many schools and at teacher trainings. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the California Academy of Sciences\, the Bay Model in Sausalito\, and another is in the collection of the Oakland Museum. You can also visit a basketry plant garden Charlie has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross\, where he and friends have woven a basket 13 feet across. DESCRIPTION:For the month of April\, weaving workshops will focus on pick-up techniques that can be used on three different weave structures: beiderwand\, mock damask\, and double weave. Pick-up is the process in which a warp pattern is picked up with a stick in order to weave patterns not otherwise possible on threading and tie-ups alone. When pick-up is used\, surface design possibilities are endless on just a simple four-shaft loom. \nAlthough there will be no loom set-up\, the weave structure\, threading\, and tie-up will be explained in detail at the beginning of class. SUMMARY:Japanese Mending as Utility and Embellishment with Jody Alexander
DESCRIPTION:Japanese mending techniques are used to repair and strengthen garments and other textile items. But\, when left visible the repairs are also decorative and add texture\, line\, and color. In this workshop\, students will create a sampler of mending techniques seen in Japanese boro textiles and will then move on to repairing or embellishing a garment or other textile item of their choice. Each student will bring an item that needs repair\, or embellishing\, and will apply one or more of the mending techniques learned in the class. \nThe instructor will bring her collection of Japanese boro textiles for inspiration. Students should bring a textile item that has a worn area that needs re-enforcing\, a hole or tear that requires repair\, a stain that needs covering\, or an item that simply could use some stitchery embellishment. This can be pants\, a dress\, a shirt or skirt\, a tablecloth\, curtain\, or other textile items. \nBasic materials for the sampler will be provided by the instructor but students are encouraged to bring fabric swatches for patching and different kinds of thread to make their project personal and unique to them. \nPlease bring: \na textile in need of mending or embellishment \nfabric scissors \nthread snips \npins \nneedles in a variety of sizes \npencil & paper \nClass Size:  12 students max. \nDate: Saturday\, April 20th\nTime: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm (with a 30-minute lunch break) \nBiography: Jody Alexander is an artist\, bookmaker\, librarian\, and teacher who lives and works in Santa Cruz\, California. She combines textiles and found objects with discarded books\, and gives them new life as scrolls\, wall pieces\, books\, sculptural objects\, and installations. Her current work is inspired by the art of repair\, mending techniques\, and reuse. Jody’s artwork appears in a number of publications including Masters: Book Arts: Major Works by Leading Artist\, 500 Handmade Books\, and 1000 Artists’ Books: Exploring the Book as Art. SUMMARY:Pick-Up on Four Shafter
DESCRIPTION:For the month of April\, weaving workshops will focus on pick-up techniques that can be used on three different weave structures: beiderwand\, mock damask\, and double weave. Pick-up is the process in which a warp pattern is picked up with a stick in order to weave patterns not otherwise possible on threading and tie-ups alone. When pick-up is used\, surface design possibilities are endless on just a simple four-shaft loom. \nAlthough there will be no loom set-up\, the weave structure\, threading\, and tie-up will be explained in detail at the beginning of class. Students will weave a project using the pick-up technique and leave with a finished sample. \nAll levels welcome. \n10 am – 3 pm \nSunday\, April 21 – Double Weave Pick-up \nCost: $210 \n
