SUMMARY:Botanical Dyeing: Exploring Emandal's Secret Colors In Summer (Willits CA)
DESCRIPTION:This event is sponsored by a Fibershed Northern California Producer or a Fibershed Affiliate. Please search for host details within the listing for more event details.\n\nHiedi Iverson will take you on a multi-date exploration of Emandal’s secret colors of summer. During this creative retreat\, we will discuss various methods for mordanting cellulose and protein fabrics/fibers using tannins and metal salts. We will forage\, gather\, and process a range of natural dye plants. We will document our findings in a dye journal. You will be provided cellulose and protein fabric samples mordanted using various methods\, allowing you to observe the resulting differences and determine which mordanting method you prefer. Heidi will also have tips and tricks for reducing friction in your creative practice\, as well as a simple method for keeping track of dye experiments\, making it easy to document your dye discoveries. We will not be mordanting any fabric during the retreat\, but Heidi will discuss the different processes and answer any questions.\nYou will learn the “folk method” process of natural dyeing. This intuitive dye method is based on general proportions. There is no difficult math involved. You don’t need to weigh everything meticulously. This is the perfect method to use when foraging and experimenting with natural dye plants. You’ll also receive a downloadable PDF with all the information you need to continue your exploration of plants and color. \nYou are welcome to bring containers to take home any leftover dye. Depending on the time\, we may be able to modify samples with iron\, acid\, and alkali after baths. \nWhat is Emandal Art Stays? A 4 night/5 day retreat for adults dedicated to creative endeavors in writing\, music\, and multiple disciplines of arts and crafts\, 16 miles NE of Willits\, California\, at a farm on the Eel River. This is a restful\, internet-free opportunity to focus on your passions\, be pampered by authentic farm-to-table meals\, revel in community\, and enjoy swims in the beautiful\, wild\, and scenic Eel River. \nSee full class listing and regarding the housing options–you will love staying in the cabins! \nLevel of experience: Beginner and beyond. \nDate: Wednesday\, June 24\, 2026 – Sunday\, June 28\, 2026 \nQuestions? Contact the organizer and learn more about Heidi on her website.

SUMMARY:Seaweed Color Study with Sasha Duerr
DESCRIPTION:Fibershed + Seelie Studio: Sea to Soil Series \nJUNE 27–28\, Create dye baths from California kelps. We’ll forage for seaweed and create color swatches of your oceanic hues. \nRegister here. \n\n\n\nJoin Sasha Duerr for a two-day seaweed extravaganza! Day one\, we’ll head to the beach to learn about different types of kelp and forage for the wrack (seaweed washed up on shore) that will become our dye baths. Day two\, we’ll gather at the Learning Center to create various dye baths from different seaweeds and modify them to produce a spectrum of colors. \nFor the first time\, Sasha is teaching her Seaweed Color Study Workshop in person. She’ll show you how to identify seaweeds that will yield wonderful colors\, build multiple dye baths\, and modify them to create a Pacific palette. Coming from her lens of natural color\, slow food\, slow fashion\, and social practice\, Sasha will delve into the textile history of seaweeds and kelp and their current role as a regenerative source of color. \nYou’ll create fabric color swatches from seaweed dye baths\, paint with saltwater colors\, and leave with a large dyed textile that can be worn or displayed. Duerr will share dye recipes\, resources\, and additional inspiration following our workshop. \nWe hope you can join us for an immersive and inspiring weekend of beachcombing\, gathering\, and creating beautiful saltwater colors together! \n*Accessibility: Please see note in the FAQ section below. \n**When booking your ticket\, you will only see June 27 as the purchase option. Booking the 27th ensures you have access to the full workshop\, including June 27 and 28. SUMMARY:Create Natural Dye from Sea Urchins with Seelie Studio & Materevolve
DESCRIPTION:Dye a Fibershed Climate Beneficial™ Verified premium Merino wool beanie using color derived from the overpopulation of purple sea urchins. \nMore information and tickets here.  \n\n\n\n\nFibershed + Seelie Studio: Sea to Soil Series \nJoin us for a hands-on workshop where conservation meets craft. You’ll dye a Fibershed Climate Beneficial™ Verified premium Merino wool beanie using color derived from the overpopulation of purple sea urchins on the Sonoma Coast. \nYou’ll learn about the nuances of creating natural dye from sea urchin spines\, including how to harvest them\, process them responsibly\, and create the best dye bath that yields lasting and vibrant pinks. Margaret\, the founder of Seelie Studio\, will share her journey to dyeing with sea urchins and the many mistakes she made along the way. \nAs part of our mindful dye practice\, you’ll learn about these ancient and resilient creatures that are essential to the balance of our coastal ecosystems. And how negative human impacts\, like climate chaos\, have created a seemingly insurmountable problem of overpopulation and the loss of nearly 95% of our kelp forests. \nMargaret will be joined by Krystle Moody Wood\, the founder and principal consultant of Materevolve\, LLC.\, a consultancy firm driven to lead the evolution of our materials world. Krystle will share her experience in addressing today’s most critical issues at the intersection of sustainable textile and ocean health and the key things you can do to support building a blue material world. \nThrough this hands-on process\, we’ll reconnect with the ocean’s story — where restoration\, stewardship\, and creativity come together. \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Fibershed + Seelie Studio: Sea to Soil Series: Get caught in the current of creativity this summer with our Sea to Soil Workshop Series\, which includes five events with seaweed dyers\, kelp specialists\, seaweed biomaterial makers\, urchin dyers\, and more. SUMMARY:Eco-print Seaweed with Sashoonya
DESCRIPTION:Eco-print with seaweed and plants on silk. Learn natural dye and resist techniques to create a layered\, wearable textile piece. \nMore information and purchase tickets here.  \n\n\n\n\nFibershed + Seelie Studio: Sea to Soil Series \nThis two-day class will introduce eco-printing with seaweed alongside select land-based plants\, offering an immersive exploration of natural dye practices rooted in both land and ocean ecosystems. Participants will work with a variety of seaweed species provided by the instructor and harvest leaves and flowers from the farm’s dye garden to develop a unique visual language on cloth. Along the way\, we will touch on foundational marine science concepts\, as well as the basics of harvesting and growing dye plants\, grounding our creative process in a deeper understanding of the materials we use. \nWorking on silk\, participants will explore how natural fibers interact with plant-based color. We will experiment with eco-printing techniques and then move into tie-resist\, stitch resist\, and block resist methods\, using dye baths made from our collected and processed plants—including fresh indigo and seasonal dye flowers. These processes will allow us to build layers of color\, texture\, and pattern\, creating depth and narrative within each piece. \nBy the end of the class\, each participant will have created a richly detailed silk scarf—designed to function as a wearable accessory\, a piece of home décor\, or a meaningful\, handmade gift. Beyond the finished object\, students will leave with a deeper understanding of eco-printing\, natural dye techniques\, and the interconnected systems of plants\, algae\, and the environment that make this work possible. \n**When booking your ticket\, you will only see August 22 as the purchase option. Booking the 22nd ensures you have access to the full workshop\, including August 22 and 23.
