SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibit - Beauty and Terror by Robin Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Robin L Bernstein will be exhibiting a selection of works from Beauty and Terror\, an 18 work series about the Holocaust\, as well as work about contemporary issues. Each artwork is made by obsessively pressing thousands of tiny cut pieces of colored string into wax. \nThe pieces in Beauty and Terror range from major aspects and lesser known crimes of the Holocaust as well as redemptive stories and heroic acts of resistance. Believing that art has the power to shift human behavior\, Bernstein chooses subject matter\, materials\, and processes that support this idea. Her subject matter combined with her artistic technique is her way of shouting from the rooftops that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. These pieces exist in part to help prevent historical amnesia and to push back against rising autocracies around the world.

SUMMARY:Indigo Extraction Process—from leaf to pigment with Judi Pettite
DESCRIPTION:Wondering how to convert the leaves of Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) into blue pigment? Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, for a day of indigo extraction with Judi Pettite — from a tour of the Fibershed pigment garden\, to a demonstration of harvesting the last indigo of the season\, then extracting the pigment from the leaves onsite using a passive fermentation process. Our focus will be on small batch extraction for home gardeners\, dyers and artisans. Dried indigo pigment can be stored for later use in a dye vat or for art mediums like paints\, inks and pastels. \nStudents should bring their own lunch\, snacks\, and beverages (water bottle/travel mug)\, as well as an apron\, notebook\, and camera. Since there will be time outdoors in the garden\, be sure to wear appropriate footwear and clothing. \nEnroll here: eventbrite.com/e/656974377047 \nJudi Pettite\, MFA\, MA is an artist and instructor working with natural pigments for applications in painting\, drawing and sculpture. She lives and works in Long Beach\, CA. \nIn the field\, studio or on the road\, she is interested in what motivates people to work with natural pigments\, how they forage or cultivate these materials and how this creativity is expressed. Her artwork is intertwined with the exploration of natural mediums and is inspired by many art forms\, including painting\, drawing\, performance and installation. \nJudi started the BioHue project in 2006 to create plant-based pigments for use in her art practice. The project moved her beyond the studio and into the outdoors she loves. Through her workshops and products\, Judi hopes to support and develop an interest in sustainable colors for artists. \n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 30 before the event. If you cancel after 30 days before the event we can only offer a refund (minus Eventbrite fees) if we are able to fill your space from the waitlist.

SUMMARY:Beginning Spinning Weekend with Mimi Luebbermann and Marlie de Swart
DESCRIPTION:Join us\, at beautiful Windrush Farm\, for a two-afternoon\, beginning wheel-spinning workshop and learn about the fascinating art of yarn-making! \nThis is an introductory two-afternoon class on how to spin on a Louet wheel with Mimi Luebbermann and Marlie de Swart. This first class begins on Saturday afternoon at Windrush Farm where you will learn to guide the wheel and twist roving into a continuous thread. The second class is on Sunday afternoon as you learn to develop control of the wheel\, produce yarn confidently and\, by the end of the afternoon\, make your own skein of two-ply yarn to take home. All materials are included. A Louet wheel is included for use during the weekend. \nClass schedule: \n\nSaturday\, September 16\, 1:00pm to 4:00pm\nSunday\, September 17\, 1:00pm to 4:00pm\n\nLocation: Windrush Farm\, 2263 Chileno Valley Road\, Petaluma\, CA 94952. \nPlease bring: Personal snacks and beverages. Windrush Farm is in a rural location outside Petaluma. The farm is located on flat but uneven terrain (please bring sturdy shoes). \nRegistration and Information: eventbrite.com/e/694395665127 \n\nAbout the Instructors: \nMarlie de Swart learned to spin as a young child at her mother’s knee in Holland\, and she has been doing it ever since. For the last twenty-two years\, she has been teaching spinning at Windrush Farm Fiber School in the Chileno Valley. Her book “Knitting Woolscapes\, Designs Inspired by Coastal Marin Wool” has many sweater patterns developed to be made with hand-spun yarn. She is one of the first board members of Fibershed and\, until recently\, owned and operated the Black Mountain Weavers Store (an artist cooperative) in Point Reyes Station. Marlie’s passion is everything fiber\, especially local fiber. \nMimi Luebbermann moved to Chileno Valley in 1995 with the dream of living quietly on a farm. Instead\, she ended up crazy about fiber and determined to create a fiber farm. Now\, sheep\, alpacas\, llamas\, goats\, and rabbits all contribute to the Windrush Farm yarns. As a dedicated spinner\, she works to educate people about the connection between fiber animals and yarn\, through school field trips\, her farmers market booth\, private tours\, and spinning classes to meet the animals and learn the process of transforming fleece to yarn. It is an endlessly fascinating life. \nInstagram: @windrushfarmpetaluma \nWeb: windrushfarm.wordpress.com \n\nTuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends:\nFibershed is offering one to two scholarships to most workshops. SUMMARY:Weaving on a Mayan Backstrap Loom with Sari Monroy Solís
DESCRIPTION:Learn to weave on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home \nThe backstrap loom goes back thousands of years and is one of the oldest known tools in the world. It evolved in several places\, including the Western highlands of Guatemala. Mayan weavers continue to make traditional clothing for everyday use and for the textile market using this traditional loom. \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will learning this ancient skill from Sari Monroy Solís\, whose paternal family comes from the Valle de Panchoy area of Sacatepequez\, Guatemala (now called Antigua and San Antonio Aguas Calientes). To connect to her Kaqchikel community and elders\, Sari weaves using the backstrap loom and teaches this art to others\, especially fellow diaspora. \nThe class will focus on the traditional Mayan backstrap loom. You will learn on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home. The class will begin by learning how the body connects to the loom\, the parts of the loom\, and how to start plain weaving. Once comfortable with plain weaving\, you will learn how to do single-side brocade using common motifs. You will learn the names and origins of these motifs and how to design your own. \nReady to start weaving? We will share a special treat from Guatemala at the end and talk about local fibers that work on these looms\, warping\, and what you can do with your finished piece. \nMaximum 8 students. \nEnroll here: eventbrite.com/e/617424602607 \nIncluded: a loom that is warped with cotton yarn\, plus tools and cotton yarn for weaving \nBring: a cushion for more comfortable seating; personal snacks\, lunch and beverages (a selection of teas will be served on site). We are in a rural location\, so most people bring their lunch rather than drive to town. \nSari (Sarah) Monroy Solís lives in diaspora in Northern California. Her father came from the Mayan Kaqchikel community in the Valle de Panchoy area of Sacatepequez\, Guatemala and her mother from the highlands of Veracruz\, Mexico. Traditional weaving\, restoring güipiles\, and Mayan embroidery are some of the ways she maintains her connection to her community of elders in Guatemala. Foraging\, natural dyes\, and plant medicine are some of the ways she honors her maternal Indigenous lineage in Veracruz. She is also an avid mender\, knitter\, and upcycler of fabrics. You can follow her as she continues to make things and explore the natural dye palette: @theblueweaver \n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 30 before the event.
