SUMMARY:Making a Lake Pigment: the alchemy of solid pigments from natural dyes with Judi Pettite
DESCRIPTION:A pigment is water insoluble and can be used for water and oil based paints. Making a dry pigment from a natural dye is a very old tradition that connected the guilds—dyers and painters and craftspeople in search of concentrated lightfast hues that were portable\, storage friendly colors. \nIn this 3-hour class\, we will discuss the difference between dyes\, extracts and lakes and their uses. We will also cover the process of making a lake pigment step by step. Three colors will be demonstrated—yellow\, red and brown. The main focus will be on the process of making your own pigments\, subsequent classes will explain and elaborate the application of lake and other natural pigments. \nParticipants will be invited to submit questions. There will be 30-minute break midway through the webinar\, and the webinar ends at 1:30 pm. \nTo register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_2sDEmM-bSiCVS4QJlXBDpw \n\nThis webinar is part of a series that will be streaming live via Zoom from the Fibershed Learning Center\, a multi-use space to demonstrate and provide hands-on connections to natural fiber and dye systems. The Learning Center will open later this year in Point Reyes Station\, California\, on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Coast Miwok and within the historic Black Mountain Ranch property. \nProceeds from each event support the class instructor and contribute to Fibershed for educational programming. A portion of the proceeds from each virtual event will also be shared with a local and mission-aligned non-profit organization\, selected by the instructor. Currently scheduled online events are listed on our Learning Center page. \nA video of the webinar will be made available to webinar registrants within approximately two weeks of the event.

SUMMARY:Contract Grazing in the Time of Fire
DESCRIPTION:In this time of unprecedented wildfires across the West\, it’s clear that wild and cultivated lands haven’t been managed to mitigate the risk of fire and we are all suffering for it. Join a panel of expert graziers to learn more about targeted grazing in the time of fire. Targeted grazing benefits land\, ranchers\, and the public good. It restores pasture\, builds fire resilience into the landscape\, and presents a promising business opportunity for ranchers. If you are interested in land management and fire prevention or are a rancher thinking of branching out into contract grazing- this workshop is for you. Join UC Cooperative Extension advisor Dan Macon from Flying Mule Farm and targeted grazing practitioners Marie Hoff from Full Circle Wool\, and Andree Soares from Star Creek Land Stewards\, for a conversation about establishing and operating a successful targeted grazing business. Presenters will cover topics from business management to logistics and fuels reduction to weed management. \n  \nSession D\, January 21\, 11:45 am – 1:00 pm

SUMMARY:Seed to Linen (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Due to its durability\, beauty\, and versatility\, flax has been cultivated to produce linen for more than 10\,000 years. Honoring this deep history\, we will discuss the growing needs of this fiber plant as well as processing steps and equipment required to get started growing and making your own linen fiber. \nThis workshop will take place online. Registrants will receive an email with a link to the Zoom event. \nInstructor: Melanie Wilder \nMelanie Wilder is a weaver\, spinner\, and natural dyer. She has spent the past 20 years dedicated to learning and teaching\, living in the Asheville\, NC area where she runs the fiber program at Warren Wilson College. She is interested in exploring how process crosses into our daily living and how intentional choices can help shape our footprint on the future. This involves the yearly rhythm of growing fibers and dyes and how the textiles made from these plants create ritual and meaning. Fascinated by historical uses and fiber techniques from across the globe and the context in which we use this information as we move forward as contemporary weavers and makers\, she hopes to inspire those she works with to find their voice within the world of fiber. \nhttps://wildearthtextiles.com

SUMMARY:Grow Your Dye Garden (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is dedicated to the dye plants that can be cultivated in our region. We will talk about the historical uses of these dyes and discuss what you need to know about planting and maintaining your color garden. When do you plant\, how far do you space the plants\, how much to plant\, what parts of the plant give dye\, etc.

SUMMARY:One Acre Exchange Industrial Hemp Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The creation of a satellite regulatory environment for industrial hemp through the passage of the 2014 Farm Bill led to a cobbling of black\, white\, and grey procedures for the procurement and cultivation of industrial hemp seed. Hemp seed\, when it is acquired\, is so far an unpredictable performer across a wide variety of soil types and cultivation methods. When hemp seed is acquired\, cultivated\, and harvested successfully\, markets are difficult to find. What do we make of this\, and what can we know about the future of industrial hemp in our farms and fields? Synthesizing lessons learned from our four years of research and practice\, this webinar will focus on the broader economy and recent historical context of industrial hemp production\, touching on the interconnections between issues of regulatory compliance\, seed acquisition\, and supply chain development. \n  \nTo register for the webinar on April 29\, 11 am PST\, click the link here.

SUMMARY:Grazing Livestock for Soil Health\, Biodiversity\, and Productivity - Two Day
DESCRIPTION:Fire season is just around the corner\, and managed grazing offers an elegant system that builds soil health and resilience to wildfires. \nAbout this Event\nAt this workshop\, we’ll hear from two leading practitioners in the field of regenerative grazing. We’ll witness firsthand a flock of sheep grazing for fuel reduction and soil-building at this beautiful retreat center in the hills of Anderson Valley. Both days of learning will be spent outdoors. \nThis workshop will explore opportunities to invest in the resilience of land\, using livestock as a vehicle for soil-building. We’ll learn how planned grazing and monitoring can build drought and fire resilience\, biodiversity\, soil carbon and increase rainfall effectiveness. \nWe will also be introduced to a framework for decision-making and planning processes developed by Allan Savory\, which helps individuals manage the complexity of the land\, human\, and economic resources they manage more effectively. \nWho is this for? This workshop is for anyone wanting to improve current land management and create resilience in our life support system for generations to come. This includes city dwellers who wish to be more connected to land\, young agrarians\, and rural landowners or ranch managers who wish to understand how to use livestock to improve the health of their land rather than degrade it. \nFor additional information and registration click here.

SUMMARY:Fibersheds: Connecting Farmers\, Artisans and Consumers to Grow Regional Economies – Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Fibersheds: Connecting Farmers\, Artisans\, and Consumers to Grow Regional Economies\nSaturday\, June 19 – 3:45 PM Eastern Time \n  \nPart of the 2021 WARP Annual Meeting – June 18-20 – Unraveling Borders\, Weaving Networks. The event will be free and open to all. Please mark your calendars\, and click here to view our program of speakers. \nAlmost a decade ago\, weaver and natural dyer Rebecca Burgess developed a project focused on wearing clothing made from fiber grown\, woven\, and sewn within her bioregion of North Central California. About the same time\, WARP member Judi Jetson developed a similar project connecting farmers and fiber artists in Western North Carolina in order to grow a new regional textile economy. Dozens of regional “fibershed” groups have sprung up around the US and in several other countries\, all sharing this vision of helping independent local producers and artisans connect with manufacturers and consumers who want more sustainable clothing.
