DESCRIPTION:On May 1\, 2019\, Bee Audacious and the Marin Art & Garden Center are co-sponsoring Bee Audacious Bay Area\, a dialogue conference that will focus on issues related to promoting pollinator habitat in the San Francisco Bay Area. \n\nTo succeed in developing workable change\, we need to bring together people in the Bay Area with different perspectives on issues related to pollinator habitat.  The goals of the day include networking\, sharing what’s worked / what hasn’t worked\, and brainstorming how we might be able to work together on projects moving forward. \n\nThis will not be a traditional conference\, but one to be guided by the methods utilized at the Simon Fraser University Center for Dialogue. There will be a few speeches. Most of the time will be spent in small groups in active dialogue. We are looking to gather constructive\, collaborative and thoughtful people who will bring experience from a wide variety of fields that produce impacts on pollinator habitat.\n  \nEarly bird registration is $95 through 3/31/19.  Regular price is $115.  \nRegistration includes lunch. Due to format (dialogue)\, we will be limiting the number of participants to 60\, so it is recommended that you register early to ensure a place in the discussions. \n

DESCRIPTION:Weaving Bootcamp for Beginners: Weaving with Chunky Yarn and Wool Roving \n  \nIn this weaving bootcamp\, you will learn the basics of weaving using thick\, luxurious yarns and wool roving (it’s that magical fluffy stuff that looks like clouds of yarn!!) You will learn beginner-level weaving skills such as how to warp a loom\, weave with a needle\, head weave with roving\, and how to make a decorative fringe. To hone your new skills\, you will work on completing one chunky wool wall hanging\, which measures 12″ X 22″ in size. Each wall hanging comes with a wooden dowel or copper pipe to insert across the top for easy hanging and beautiful wall display! Each student will leave with one finished wall hanging\, one wooden weaving loom\, a handout with a recap of the skills\, terms\, and resources discussed in class\, and the skill to design and produce additional weaving projects on their loom at home! \n  \nPre-requisite: None. This class is ideal for total beginners with no experience. If you have taken our Intro to Weaving: Woven Tapestry Edition class\, please note that this bootcamp class teaches a different style of weaving\, uses a different loom\, and utilizes thicker yarns for the final wall hanging. This bootcamp is a fantastic compliment to the skills taught in the Intro to Weaving class\, but by no means requires any prior weaving experience. \n  \nSupplies Needed: None. We have done all the legwork of sourcing the hard-to-find yarns\, roving\, and a simple wooden loom. You will receive a loom that measures 17″ X 23″\, and is simple to disassemble for easy storage. These wooden looms usually run around $30 retail. Please join us for our annual Sheep Shearing Day on Duckworth Family Farm. \n  \nThis year our shearer is John Sanchez\, truly one of the best in the industry. Watch and learn as he shears sheep with compassion and such skill that he makes it looks easy. \n  \nOur guest expert is Joann Slissman of Wyammy Ranch. Joann will be teaching all the fine aspects of wool: What to look for in fleece\, and how to properly ‘skirt’ a fleece after it comes off the sheep\, and what your next step will be in the fiber journey. \n  \nJoann is an active hand spinner who realized the need for locally produced high-quality wool. She has won multiple awards for her high-quality fleeces and breeds the best Romney sheep stock in the state. We were very fortunate to have purchased our first Romney sheep from her 17 years ago. \n  \nWe will be shearing 40 sheep of multiple breeds including; Corriedale\, Shetland\, Shetland Crosses\, East Freisian\, and our newest rare breed\, Awassi. \n  \nThis event is kid-friendly\, messy\, informative and fun. We will have fleeces for sale following shearing. DESCRIPTION:For the month of April\, weaving workshops will focus on pick-up techniques that can be used on three different weave structures: beiderwand\, mock damask\, and double weave. Pick-up is the process in which a warp pattern is picked up with a stick in order to weave patterns not otherwise possible on threading and tie-ups alone. SUMMARY:Japanese Mending as Utility and Embellishment with Jody Alexander
DESCRIPTION:Japanese mending techniques are used to repair and strengthen garments and other textile items. But\, when left visible the repairs are also decorative and add texture\, line\, and color. In this workshop\, students will create a sampler of mending techniques seen in Japanese boro textiles and will then move on to repairing or embellishing a garment or other textile item of their choice. Each student will bring an item that needs repair\, or embellishing\, and will apply one or more of the mending techniques learned in the class. \nThe instructor will bring her collection of Japanese boro textiles for inspiration. Students should bring a textile item that has a worn area that needs re-enforcing\, a hole or tear that requires repair\, a stain that needs covering\, or an item that simply could use some stitchery embellishment. This can be pants\, a dress\, a shirt or skirt\, a tablecloth\, curtain\, or other textile items. \nBasic materials for the sampler will be provided by the instructor but students are encouraged to bring fabric swatches for patching and different kinds of thread to make their project personal and unique to them. \nPlease bring: \na textile in need of mending or embellishment \nfabric scissors \nthread snips \npins \nneedles in a variety of sizes \npencil & paper \nClass Size:  12 students max. \nDate: Saturday\, April 20th\nTime: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm (with a 30-minute lunch break) \nBiography: Jody Alexander is an artist\, bookmaker\, librarian\, and teacher who lives and works in Santa Cruz\, California. The class also includes 2 skeins of Madeline Tosh DK (at 15% off!)\, the perfect yarn for your first rigid heddle weaving. Please remember to arrive 20-30 minutes before class to select your yarn and have it wound before class. \nCourse requirements: You must love yarn\, but no previous weaving experience is necessary. \nWhat to bring to class: Rigid heddle loom (such as a Schacht Cricket – available to rent)\, 8 dent heddle\, Warping peg\, Warping hook\, 2 shuttles\, Tapestry needle\, Scissors \nStudents receive 10% off Schacht looms. \n———————– \nLoom Rental Policies: \nIf you need to rent a Cricket loom for use during class\, please add Cricket Loom Rental to your cart along with your class. The rental includes the loom accessories: 8 dent heddle\, warping peg\, warping hook\, and 2 shuttles. \nUpon receiving your rental at the first class\, you will need to provide a phone number and credit card number as a deposit for the rental of the loom.
