SUMMARY:Duckworth Farm's Annual Sheep Shearing
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again! Please join us for our annual Sheep Shearing Day on Duckworth Family Farm. \n  \nThis year our shearer is John Sanchez\, truly one of the best in the industry. Watch and learn as he shears sheep with compassion and such skill that he makes it looks easy. \n  \nOur guest expert is Joann Slissman of Wyammy Ranch. Joann will be teaching all the fine aspects of wool: What to look for in fleece\, and how to properly ‘skirt’ a fleece after it comes off the sheep\, and what your next step will be in the fiber journey. \n  \nJoann is an active hand spinner who realized the need for locally produced high-quality wool. She has won multiple awards for her high-quality fleeces and breeds the best Romney sheep stock in the state. We were very fortunate to have purchased our first Romney sheep from her 17 years ago. \n  \nWe will be shearing 40 sheep of multiple breeds including; Corriedale\, Shetland\, Shetland Crosses\, East Freisian\, and our newest rare breed\, Awassi. \n  \nThis event is kid-friendly\, messy\, informative and fun. We will have fleeces for sale following shearing. We are asking for a small $10 donation to offset the cost of our teacher and snacks for those that will be staying to help. \n  \nPlease contact us if you would like to join us on Shearing Day via Blueberries@sonic.net or 707-829-7999 \n

SUMMARY:"Loved Clothes Last" Mending Bar
DESCRIPTION:Each year the United States sends 12.8 million tons of textile waste to landfill. As style turnover has accelerated\, so has our appetite for new\, trendy clothing. Today we buy 4 times as much clothing as we did two decades ago\, yet we get 36% less wear out of our garments before we discard them. \n  \nInspired to empower consumers and keep clothing out of landfill\, the Sustainable Fashion Alliance has partnered with Fibershed and California College of the Arts to present a unique “Mending Bar” experience designed to equip attendees with valuable tools that will help prolong the wearability of their loved pieces of clothing. \n  \nTaking place during Fashion Revolution Week in San Francisco\, the event will feature five mending stations to join at your leisure. Onsite mending stations include: hand mending\, machine mending and altering\, knit darning\, creative embroidery and an upcycle station\, sponsored by Bella Notte Linens\, where attendees can make drawstring bags from a variety of fabric scraps. In addition to light snacks and Revive Kombucha\, attendees can show off their renewed and repaired duds in our “Loved Clothes Last” photo booth by Paige Green Photography. \n  \nWhat to bring (1-3 pieces): clothing with rips\, tears or split seams\, clothing that you’d like to learn to alter\, clothing with stains or discoloration that you’d like to hide with embroidery \n  \nTore your favorite jeans? Repair them with decorative Boro and Sashiko Japanese mending techniques \n  \nFound a hole or snag in your knit sweater? Darn them with new knitting skills \n  \nNot getting use out of an ill fitting dress or pair of trousers? Hem and/or alter to customize to your unique shape \n  \nHave a stain on a loved top? Hide with beautiful embroidery techniques

SUMMARY:Pick-Up on Four Shafter
DESCRIPTION:For the month of April\, weaving workshops will focus on pick-up techniques that can be used on three different weave structures: beiderwand\, mock damask\, and double weave. Pick-up is the process in which a warp pattern is picked up with a stick in order to weave patterns not otherwise possible on threading and tie-ups alone. When pick-up is used\, surface design possibilities are endless on just a simple four-shaft loom. \nAlthough there will be no loom set-up\, the weave structure\, threading\, and tie-up will be explained in detail at the beginning of class. Students will weave a project using the pick-up technique and leave with a finished sample. \nAll levels welcome. \n10 am – 3 pm \nSunday\, April 21 – Double Weave Pick-up \nCost: $210 \n

SUMMARY:Japanese Mending as Utility and Embellishment with Jody Alexander
DESCRIPTION:Japanese mending techniques are used to repair and strengthen garments and other textile items. But\, when left visible the repairs are also decorative and add texture\, line\, and color. In this workshop\, students will create a sampler of mending techniques seen in Japanese boro textiles and will then move on to repairing or embellishing a garment or other textile item of their choice. Each student will bring an item that needs repair\, or embellishing\, and will apply one or more of the mending techniques learned in the class. \nThe instructor will bring her collection of Japanese boro textiles for inspiration. Students should bring a textile item that has a worn area that needs re-enforcing\, a hole or tear that requires repair\, a stain that needs covering\, or an item that simply could use some stitchery embellishment. This can be pants\, a dress\, a shirt or skirt\, a tablecloth\, curtain\, or other textile items. \nBasic materials for the sampler will be provided by the instructor but students are encouraged to bring fabric swatches for patching and different kinds of thread to make their project personal and unique to them. \nPlease bring: \na textile in need of mending or embellishment \nfabric scissors \nthread snips \npins \nneedles in a variety of sizes \npencil & paper \nClass Size:  12 students max. \nDate: Saturday\, April 20th\nTime: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm (with a 30-minute lunch break) \nBiography: Jody Alexander is an artist\, bookmaker\, librarian\, and teacher who lives and works in Santa Cruz\, California. She combines textiles and found objects with discarded books\, and gives them new life as scrolls\, wall pieces\, books\, sculptural objects\, and installations. Her current work is inspired by the art of repair\, mending techniques\, and reuse. Jody’s artwork appears in a number of publications including Masters: Book Arts: Major Works by Leading Artist\, 500 Handmade Books\, and 1000 Artists’ Books: Exploring the Book as Art. Jody is the 2015 recipient of the Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship. \nCancellation policy: Please note\, for this special event\, you must cancel 7 days before the start date of your class in order to receive a full refund. We cannot honor any refunds within 7 days of the class start date unless we are able to fill the class from the waiting list. \n

SUMMARY:The Natural Baby Series: Washcloth
DESCRIPTION:In April\, we focus on natural handwoven textiles for the baby. All projects in this series will be made using 100% cotton. Arguably the most important textile fiber\, cotton is soft\, absorbent\, light\, vegan and naturally hypoallergenic. Take classes in this series to make cloths for your own baby or to give to a special\, expecting mother. \n  \nSecond\, in the series is the washcloth. We will make lightly textured cloths using fine yarns to achieve the softest and lightest cloths for washing. Weavers in this workshop have the option of making a baby towel instead of washcloths. \n  \nThe workshop is 6 hours\, Sunday\, April 14\, 11 am – 5 pm \n$210 + cost of materials.

SUMMARY:Twined Sweetgrass Basket with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:We will begin small twined baskets made with a diminutive relative of tule (Schoenoplectus americanus) known as “sweetgrass” among native weavers in the Pacific Northwest. As well as being fragrant\, it is strong and soft\, and lends itself to a variety of weaving strokes. \n  \nCharlie Kennard of San Anselmo is a long-time basket weaver and student of California Indian and other traditional basketry techniques.
\n10 am – 3 pm \nSunday\, April 7 – Beiderwand Pick-up \nCost: $210 \n

SUMMARY:Tule Berry-Gathering Basket Workshop with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:~This workshop is full. ~ Click the “Register Now” here to join the waitlist. \n  \nEnjoy a delightful day full of hands-on learning in Heron Hall and around the peaceful Laguna Environmental Center grounds with master weaver\, Charlie Kennard. Using tule\, (a giant species of sedge native to the Laguna and freshwater marshes all over North America)\, we will weave an Owens Valley Paiute-style scoop-shaped basket. This basket was used for gathering berries and for storing honey-dew collected from the leaves of common reed. Several unusual weaving techniques will be practiced during this workshop. \n  \nPrevious experience with twining is recommended. Suitable for adults and teenagers. All basket-making materials are included in the registration fee. Participants bring their own lunch. Hot drinks and snacks are provided throughout the day. \n  \nCharlie Kennard of San Anselmo is a long-time basket weaver and student of California Indian and other traditional basketry techniques of the world. He teaches throughout the Bay Area\, and in many schools and at teacher trainings. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the California Academy of Sciences\, the Bay Model in Sausalito\, and in the collection of the Lake County Museum. You can also visit a basketry plant garden Charlie has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross\, where he and friends have woven a basket 13 feet across. Charlie is active in native habitat restoration in Marin\, managing several projects for Friends of Corte Madera Creek Watershed.
