She has over a decade of experience writing and implementing hands-on curriculum that focuses on the intersection of restoration ecology and fiber systems. She has taught at Westminster College\, Harvard University\, and has created workshops for a range of NGOs and corporations. She is the author of the best-selling book Harvesting Color\, a bioregional look into the natural dye traditions of North America. DESCRIPTION:Indigo extract is a versatile saturating pigment\, an ideal art medium. Fibreshed develops place-based regional fibre and natural dye systems that generate necessary forms of material culture\, while simultaneously regenerating lost carbon stocks in our soils and providing meaningful livelihoods. Fibershed founder Rebecca Burgess has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans within the Northern California fibreshed and is piloting a regenerative fibre systems model at a community scale. Rebecca will talk about starting a fibreshed and discuss her involvement with Fibreshed Field School\, a program led by Emily Smith and run by the Shumka Centre for Creative Entrepreneurship.

She is the chief curator of MelaninASS (Melanin and Sustainable Style) – a blog platform amplifying the voices of BIPOC across sustainable fashion\, beauty\, and wellness spaces. She is also the Co-Founder of Sustainable Brooklyn\, an organization working to bridge the gap between the sustainability movement and targeted communities using tailored high-low approaches through BIPOC focused events & resource development. \nRebecca Burgess\, M.ed\, is the Executive Director of Fibershed\, Chair of the Board for Carbon Cycle Institute\, and the author of Harvesting Color. She is a vocationally trained weaver and natural dyer. She has over a decade of experience writing and implementing hands-on curricula that focus on the intersection of restoration ecology and fiber systems. Burgess has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans in the Northern California Fibershed to pilot an innovative fiber systems model at the community scale. DESCRIPTION:In this 1.5-hour demo and Q&A session\, Robin Lynde of Meridian Jacobs (fibershed.org/producers/meridian-jacobs/) will show how to weave a neck warmer (a short scarf with a slit) on a take-anywhere rigid heddle loom\, with the easiest warping method you’ll ever use! Rigid heddle looms are simple to warp\, inexpensive\, and very portable. This is a great project for the person who wants to learn about weaving\, as well as a fun one for experienced weavers. Your whole project can easily be completed in a day. A great project to do on-the-go\, this loom can even go camping with you! DESCRIPTION:A pigment is water insoluble and can be used for water and oil based paints. Making a dry pigment from a natural dye is a very old tradition that connected the guilds—dyers and painters and craftspeople in search of concentrated lightfast hues that were portable\, storage friendly colors. \nIn this 3-hour class\, we will discuss the difference between dyes\, extracts and lakes and their uses. We will also cover the process of making a lake pigment step by step. Three colors will be demonstrated—yellow\, red and brown. The main focus will be on the process of making your own pigments\, subsequent classes will explain and elaborate the application of lake and other natural pigments. \nParticipants will be invited to submit questions. The Learning Center will open later this year in Point Reyes Station\, California\, on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Coast Miwok and within the historic Black Mountain Ranch property. \nProceeds from each event support the class instructor and contribute to Fibershed for educational programming. A portion of the proceeds from each virtual event will also be shared with a local and mission-aligned non-profit organization\, selected by the instructor.
