SUMMARY:Keeping Fashion Close to Home for Better and Lighter Living
DESCRIPTION:Objective: To highlight community solutions for reversing unsustainable trends in fashion and textiles\n\nDescription: Our wardrobes and textiles protect us from the elements and enable expressions of culture and individuality. Responsibility for closing the fashion loop lies not only with consumers\, who are affected by price\, trends\, advertising\, and available options but also with communities and companies who design\, produce\, and market products and set the policy infrastructure. The fashion industry sector and textiles stand out because people identify so intimately with purchasing decisions about what they wear. We’re seeing sustainable fashion trending in the media as consumer concern rises over the negative impacts of this industry on the environment. Better sourcing and production efforts\, consumer messaging (uniqueness and quality over quantity)\, reuse and vintage models\, and more product information are all emerging solutions. This webinar will showcase local and regional fiber and textile systems that drive environmentally and socially healthy production chains and businesses\, support local job creation\, and rebuild markets for regionally produced fashion and fiber-based products.\n  \n  \n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\nKatia Vladimirova\, Founder\, Sustainable Fashion Consumption Working Group \n\n\n\nKirstin Miller\, Ecocity Builders \nWinona LaDuke\, Honor the Earth & Winona’s Hemp \nRebecca Burgess\, Fibershed \nHarry Moser\, Founder\, Reshoring Initiative

SUMMARY:Sonoma County Environmental Stewardship Panel: Education\, Predators & Balanced Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:This panel was formed to create an open\, amicable\, and educational discussion regarding wildlife management\, land conversion\, local policy & livestock predation\, specifically addressing how these issues affect our local food supply & grazing for fire fuel load reduction. \nThis is a grassroots effort to gather information\, experience\, and knowledge in a manner that honors and respects all voices. To bring together all parties of an emotionally heightened\, culturally fractioning topic in order to provide education\, while reducing the animosity between sides. We are attempting to create a methodology and template in which we can experience and consider a viewpoint that is different from our own while realizing that we can agree with aspects of both sides of the argument. We (the general public\, farmers\, researchers\, and governmental entities) are all connected and will never move forward in the discussion of these topics without flexibility\, respect\, and empathy. \nMoving forward\, we hope to develop two more panels to step this grassroots effort into creating more well-rounded policy & to provide management systems that support all different parties involved. \nClick here to register via Zoom

SUMMARY:In Conversation: The Fibershed Movement
DESCRIPTION:What Does Fashion Have to Do With Farming? Exploring the Growing Fibershed Movement in the UK \n  \nSimilar to a local watershed or a foodshed\, a Fibershed is focused on the source of the raw material\, the transparency with which it is converted into clothing\, and the connectivity among all parts\, from soil to skin and back to soil. \n  \nFibershed is an international movement developing regional and regenerative fibre systems\, where farmers\, producers\, textile workers\, designers\, distributors and many others work together to responsibly manage the full lifecycle of a garment. \n  \nJoin a panel discussion with Fibershed founding director Rebecca Burgess to discuss how the movement started in the USA and has subsequently grown around the world. We’ll hear from those building the Fibershed movement within the UK\, including Emma Hague\, who is founding director of the Bristol Textile Quarter and started the South West England Fibreshed group. We’ll also hear from farmer Gala Bailey-Barker of Plow Hatch Farm and natural dyer Deborah Barker who founded the South East England Fibreshed group. Abby Rose\, of Farmerama Radio\, will be leading the conversation\, and we’ll have time to delve into questions from the audience at the end!

SUMMARY:Live FEEDBACK FRIDAY with Fibershed Founder Rebecca Burgess
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 31st\, 9 am Pacific\, 12 pm Eastern for a live Zoom FEEDBACK FRIDAY with Fibershed Founder\, Rebecca Burgess. \nRebecca Burgess is the executive director of Fibershed\, chair of the board for Carbon Cycle Institute\, and the author of Harvesting Color as well as Fibershed-Growing a Movement of Farmers\, Fashion Activists\, and Makers for a New Textile Economy. \n  \nRSVP for FEEDBACK FRIDAY with Fibershed Founder Rebecca Burgess HERE. \nRebecca is a vocationally trained weaver and natural dyer and has over a decade of experience writing and implementing hands-on curricula that focus on the intersection of restoration ecology and fiber systems. She has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans in the Northern California Fibershed to pilot an innovative fiber systems model at the community scale. Her project has become internationally recognized with over 53 Fibershed communities now in existence. \nRebecca began the Fibershed journey in 2010 with a commitment “to develop and wear a prototype wardrobe whose dyes\, fibers and labor were sourced from a region no larger than 150 miles from the project’s headquarters. Burgess had no expected outcomes from the personal challenge other than to reduce her own ecological footprint and maybe inspire a few others. \nShe teamed up with a talented group of farmers and artisans to build the wardrobe by hand\, as manufacturing equipment had all been lost from the landscape more than 20 years ago. The goal was to illuminate that regionally grown fibers\, natural dyes\, and local talent was still in great enough existence to provide this most basic human necessity—our clothes. Within months\, the project became a movement\, and the word Fibershed and the working concept behind it spread to regions across the globe. \n  \nFEEDBACK FRIDAY \nIf you are not familiar with FEEDBACK FRIDAY\, every week\, we speak with dyers\, artists\, scientists and scholars about our favorite topic\, natural dyeing and color. Curated by Amy DuFault\, Botanical Colors’ Sustainability and Social Media Director and presented by Botanical Colors’ Founder  Kathy Hattori.

SUMMARY:Let's Talk... Regenerative Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Almost a decade ago\, weaver and natural dyer Rebecca Burgess envisioned a ‘fibershed\,’ a place-based textile system\, similar to a watershed or foodshed\, that could mitigate climate change\, support farmer livelihoods\, and strengthen regional economies. \nToday\, Fibershed has pioneered a bioregional approach to regenerating ecosystems and decentralizing the textile supply chain. Join us this Thursday\, July 23rd at 10 am PST to hear Rebecca’s perspective on how regenerative fiber can change a challenging supply system. \nReserve your spot here.

SUMMARY:Growing & Processing Flax with Sandy Fisher
DESCRIPTION:Join Sandy Fisher of Chico Flax for an online presentation about growing and processing flax to make linen. Sandy will first show images of this year’s crop—growing\, harvesting\, retting in the field and in the tanks\, and drying on the lines before processing. Sandy will then do a hands-on demo of all three steps of flax processing: 1) The manual Brake and how/why the tool is used with the flax bundle. 2) The Scutching board and paddle and how/why it is used. 3) The three combs called Hackles that separates the short tow from the long lin\, and an explanation of tow and long lin. \nParticipants will be invited to submit questions. \nRegister on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VGX1ek-HSiKRVW_E1lDioA \nA video of the webinar will be made available to webinar registrants within approximately one week of the event. \n\nSandy has been weaving for over 35 years. Her passion for textiles began as a child when she learned to knit. She continued her love of textiles in college\, graduating with a BA degree in Art\, emphasis in Weaving from CSU\, Chico. Over the course of her career Sandy has shared her knowledge through both private and public instruction. In 2012 Sandy was looking for a locally sourced fiber other than wool to make a unique fabric that would be called Chico Cloth. She and other community members started experiments in growing fiber flax in Northern California. In 2016 Chico Flax joined Fibershed’s Producer Program and in 2018 Chico Flax LLC was formed. Chico Flax is piloting regenerative production and processing systems for flax in our region\, bringing a new industry and social enterprise to Northern California in collaboration with local community members\, farmers\, artisans and institutions. By winter of 2020\, marketable yarns blended with wool and cotton will be available. \n\nThis webinar is part of a series that will be streaming live via Zoom from the Fibershed Learning Center\, \nThe Fibershed Learning Center is a multi-use space to demonstrate and provide hands-on connections to natural fiber and dye systems. The Learning Center will open later this year in Point Reyes Station\, California\, on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Coast Miwok and within the historic Black Mountain Ranch property. \nDuring this time of sheltering in place\, we are pleased to begin offering a series of online classes via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: This is a 3 Day Workshop; July 3\, 4 + 5; 10 am – 4 pm \n  \nLOCATION: Credo High School; 1300 Valley House Dr. Suite 100 \n  \nThis 3-day workshop will focus on designing and making one-piece fashionable and wearable nuno felted garments; e.g. dresses or skirts. \nStudents will explore the various textures and rough surfaces using different techniques and materials. \n  \nYou will learn how to add pleats to achieve extra float accents into your project. \n  \nStudents will learn how to enlarge a normal pattern into a felting pattern using the simple basic techniques that Sharit uses in her work. This is a very effective method that will help them to develop your own pattern template that will be a custom fit for you. \nMost importantly you will learn how to work with the direction of the wool to achieve a personalized style. The direction of the wool is very important to determine the shrinkage\, the styling and the shaping of the felted finished garments. \n  \nAll materials included. \n  \nAges: 18+ Skill Requirements: Students will be working on their feet for extended periods of time\, and using their body to felt the wool. Basic understanding of felting wool is highly recommended. \nTaught by: Sharit

SUMMARY:Rust Belt Fibershed Virtual Mending Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:Rust Belt Fibershed Virtual Meet-Up on May 21 at 7 PM! \nJoin us for our first virtual Mending Show and Tell !\nHave you worked to repair a textile/garment and would like to share the story of that cloth? Maybe it’s an old moth-eaten sweater\, or an old pair of jeans\, or your grandma’s quilt? Or maybe it’s even a hole in a tote bag? Any repair counts! \nWe’d love to hear about your experience (maybe it was your first mend? Maybe your 1000th!)\, your technique\, your process\, or even just the story behind the garment would be a treasure for us to hear! How/Why did you choose to repair that particular textile?\nProjects do not have to be complete- this could be a work in progress! Your repair doesn’t have to look any particular way or even use any particular technique if you’re a newbie! Bring whatever you’d like to share.\nAlso\, you don’t need a flashy story- just showing us what you’re working on is great\, too! \nNot a mender? Still join us! We’ll be talking Fibershed updates and initiatives\, and we’ll be brainstorming about engagement for summer months. \nThis is a chance for us to participate in some much-needed community building\, and we hope you’ll join us!

SUMMARY:Natural Dye Virtual Demo + Navajo Nation Mask Drive
DESCRIPTION:Learn how plants in your garden and pantry can provide color for your cloth mask\, and help us send a bulk donation of California Cloth Foundry masks to the Navajo Nation Chinle Chapter. \nFibershed is sponsoring a virtual demonstration of natural dyeing a cotton mask with plants that are also known for their medicinal properties. Natural dyer\, teacher\, and ethnobotanist Deepa Natarajan will lead this 1-hour overview focusing on the process of dyeing a California Cloth Foundry organic cotton mask. She will introduce participants to a wide range of plants that are common to our kitchen and gardens and which can provide a colorful hue and rewarding creative process that is applicable to light-colored cotton fabrics. The virtual demonstration will include live\, moderated Q&A\, and will be recorded so that anyone who registers can access the video replay. \n  \nOur goal is to collectively provide 1000 masks to the Navajo Nation to support public health in a region with one of the highest rates of Coronavirus infection. Thanks to California Cloth Foundry’s cloth mask production using Organic US cotton and California-grown Cleaner Cotton\, and ethical manufacturing in Los Angeles\, we can come together to send a shipment of masks by May 15th. \n  \nFibershed and California Cloth Foundry have joined together to organize the logistics of this mask drive effort\, thanks to outreach by Mai Nguyen of Farmer Mai and the National Young Farmers Coalition\, and Marie Hoff of Full Circle Wool.  \nMai and Marie inspired this donation effort after hearing from colleagues at the First Nations Development Institute that the Navajo Nation is seeking contributions in response to the high per-capita rate of Covid-19. To donate directly to the Official Navajo Nation Covid-19 Relief Fund\, visit: https://www.nndoh.org/donate.html \nCalifornia Cloth Foundry has provided mask donations to impacted communities through the “Buy One Gift One” program beginning in late March. California Cloth Foundry is a member of the Northern California Fibershed Producer Program and creator of a soil-to-skin\, US grown and made supply chain. As the Los Angeles area began shutting down to reduce the spread of the novel Coronavirus\, California Cloth Foundry engaged and transformed their existing supply network to produce masks “to serve our community and maximize our social\, economical and environmental impact — with our regenerative cloth masks made from compostable plant based ingredients without harmful chemicals” said founder Lydia Wendt. Hearing of this effort\, Solminer Wine Co.\, an Organic and Biodynamic wine producer in the Santa Ynez Valley of California\, reached out to support a bulk donation of California Cloth Foundry masks.  \nJoining together with California Cloth Foundry and Solminer Wine Co.\, Fibershed is sponsoring a virtual demonstration of natural dyeing to generate funds for additional masks\, while providing a creative educational opportunity as part of our ongoing series of virtual demonstrations by Fibershed artisan members. \nDeepa Natarajan is a member of the Northern California Fibershed community\, co-authored 10 Plants for Color: A Simple Guide to Growing and Using Natural Dye Plants with Helen Krayenhoff\, produced Verdant Color: The Bay Area Natural Dye Journal\, and organizes the annual Fiber & Dye Exhibit at UC Berkeley Botanic Garden. In Deepa’s words: “I believe that gardens can be a source of all things we need\, from foods to medicines\, garments to shelters\, beauty\, and inspiration.” \nNatural dyeing is a time-honored tradition throughout the world; in what is now known as the United States\, the first naturally dyed wools emerged when the Navajo and Hopi tribes began to work with the sheep imported by the Spanish more than four hundred years ago. We honor and acknowledge the expertise and legacy of the Navajo Nation in natural dyeing\, and invite you to learn more about their cultural practices here: Nizhoni Ranch News: The History of Creating Vegetal Rug Dyes; Navajo Times: Weaver Earns Best of Show for Dye Chart. \nFor further creative engagement\, we encourage you to follow and support the work of contemporary Diné / Navajo fiber artists\, including: Darci Rose\, Naiomi Glasses\, and Jennifer Berg. In Harvesting Color: How to Find Plants and Make Natural Dyes\, Fibershed founder and author Rebecca Burgess celebrates the Navajo dye tradition and writes about the dye work of Navaho Dyer Rose Ann Dedman\, as she experienced it through a class with Weaving in Beauty.  \nWe hope you will join us in this opportunity to learn together and support a community in need. \n  \nThere are two ways to join this virtual demonstration: \n\nRegister directly via Zoom if you want to join and learn from this class and you do not need a new mask for yourself. Your registration fee will allow us to donate 2 masks to the Navajo Nation. (You will not receive a mask).\nPurchase a mask directly from California Cloth Foundry by May 15th and you will receive a cotton mask that you can dye. One mask will also be donated directly to the Navajo Nation\, and when you enter code “Fibershed” at check-out\, you will be added to the registration list for the virtual demonstration.

SUMMARY:Regnerative Economies: What are they\, and can fashion play a role in building them?
DESCRIPTION:A few years ago\, environment conversations started to introduce regeneration as a concept. This meant moving the focus from sustainability\, which has traditionally focused on minimising negative impacts\, to actively repairing the damage that has been done to the planet and restoring critical ecosystems. \n  \nAt Trace Collective that is the focus of our work and where our heart sits: on exploring how\, through fashion\, we can create a market economy that drives demand for nature-based solutions to climate change. In this session we’ll talk to some of the leading experts on nature-based solutions to climate change and get to know incredibly inspiring projects from across the world. We’ll then work together to figure out how we can plug into these economies through our day to day purchases and decisions. \n  \nExpect a workshop packed with info\, important conversations that involve you\, and hands-on breakout groups\, and expect leaving inspired and full of hope. \n  \n\nThe workshop features Rebecca Burgess\, ED of Fibershed and Elizabeth Whitlow. \n  \nRegister here
