SUMMARY:Gourd Weaving using Pine Needles with Abeni Pierson
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day unwinding\, learning and weaving Pine Needles and Gourds into natural works of art. Purchase tickets here.  \n\n\n\n\nDuring this workshop\, we’ll work with two natural materials that have been used across cultures for generations: gourds and pine needles. We’ll begin with an introduction to gourds: what they are\, how they grow\, and how they’ve been traditionally used for vessels\, tools\, and art. Before any weaving begins\, we’ll scrub and clean our gourds\, decorate them\, and drill holes around the rim to get them ready for weaving. \nThen I’ll demonstrate the basics of pine needle weaving and how to use the pine needles to embellish and transform the gourd. Along the way\, I’ll share cultural context\, highlighting Indigenous\, African\, and global traditions that use gourds and coiled basketry for everyday and ceremonial life. \nAll materials will be provided\, including prepared gourds and pine needles. No prior experience is needed; this class is beginner-friendly. Participants will leave with a finished or nearly finished woven gourd\, along with the skills and confidence to continue exploring this craft at home. Additional Pine needle bundles and gourds will be for sale for future projects at the end of class. \nDate: Sunday October 11th\, from 10am – 4:30pm \nCost: $235 wich includes all materials ($20). \nInstructor Abeni ‘Abi’ Pierson: is a Chicagoland native\, fiber artist\, educator\, and the founder of Where the Pines Grow. She studied fashion design at Columbia College Chicago\, but over time felt pulled away from the fashion industry and toward a more sustainable way of making. She works with plant fibers she forages\, cleans\, and dyes by hand. Abeni is committed to keeping the language of American folk arts alive by leading workshops around the U.S. in pine needle weaving\, gourd carving\, cattail weaving\, and broom corn weaving. Her classes are welcoming and grounding\, encouraging people to slow down\, create with their hands\, and reconnect with the natural world. For more about Abi and her work\, visit Wherethepinesgrow.com or insta: @wherethe_pinesgrow. \nWant to learn more?: You are also encouraged to attend Abi’s Broom-making Workshop on Saturday Ocotober 10th at Fibershed to createyour own brooms using natural materials\, including Broomcorn. \n– – – – – – – – – – – \nFibershed Scholarship Program \nFibershed offers limited workshop scholarships to students\, people on a fixed income\, and those whose financial situation makes the class unattainable. DESCRIPTION:Please note: This is a 2 day workshop spread out over a month. Please check to make sure you are able to attend on BOTH 9/26 and 10/17 from 10:00am-4:00pm \nDuring this 2 day workshop learn the ancient art of tannin-bath hide tanning. Hide tanning\, the process that turns animal skin into durable leather\, has been done for thousands of years all across the globe. Today this craft is a rewarding hobby that allows us to honor the lives of the animals who gave us these hides. The hides that will be used in this workshop are hides from Hidden Villa sheep. \nOn the first day of the workshop 9/26\,  participants will learn how to scrape and wash hides. After soaking in the tannin bath\, participants will come back\, 10/17\, to stretch and dry their hides. At the end of the workshop participants will take home a finished hide\, an embodied new skill\, a step-by step guide\, and a connection with their cohort. \n  \nInstructor Background: \nTamar Ingber has been hide-tanning as a practice since 2020\, with a focus on small ruminants. She has worked with a variety of ranches\, using both egg/smoke and tannin-bath methods\, to produce beautiful hides. She is passionate about sharing the process of transformation from a raw pelt into a sustainable material for our lives. \nTamar shares this course honoring her Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry\, and a thread of connection to fiber creation. She chooses to share this ancestral skill\, held by many cultures and people\, as a way to connect each participant to their roots\, and this skill. \nGood to Know\nThis is a 2 day workshop spread out over a month. Please check to make sure you are able to attend on BOTH 9/26 and 10/17. \nAll workshop materials and tools are provided. Please bring lunch for each day of the workshop.
