SUMMARY:English Willow Basket Weaving Demonstration with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:A demonstration of weaving a large traditional English willow basket from start to finish \nCharlie will make a traditional large English willow basket from start to finish\, while pointing out the various techniques involved. At hand will be a selection of baskets exhibiting a variety of European willow techniques. \nThis demonstration doubles as a preparation for those who are interested in an upcoming two-day Willow Basket workshop at Fibershed Learning Center (December 3 & 4)\, so that attendees can gauge whether they are ready for the challenge of making a large willow basket. \nThe demonstration is limited to 18 attendees\, and will take place at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA. (Address provided upon registration.) Weather permitting\, we will be sitting outdoors in a shaded area. (You are welcome to bring your own outdoor folding chair or cushion\, otherwise outdoor seating is on wooden folding chairs.) In the event of rain\, we will be in the garage studio/classroom\, which has plenty of ventilation. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the Bay Model in Sausalito\, Lake County Museum\, and another is in the collection of the Oakland Museum. You can also visit a basketry plant garden Charlie has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross. SUMMARY:Natural Palettes of Fall Color in West Marin with Sasha Duerr
DESCRIPTION:Join Sasha Duerr onsite at the Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch in Point Reyes Station for a day of exploring fall color and the natural palettes of seasonal color in Northern California. We will gather a variety of onsite ingredients\, then make and use natural dye baths with those ingredients and others. \nTogether we will create a local fall dye palette from a curated selection of gathered ingredients\, including weeds and food and flora waste. Explore the nuances and beauty of color terroir\, and create an array of take-home\, naturally dyed textiles\, saturated in the seasonal tones of West Marin. \nStudents should bring: lunch\, snacks\, and beverages (water bottle/travel mug). Teaching for over a decade at California College of Arts with a joint appointment in Textiles and Fine Arts\, Sasha lectures\, consults\, and widely designs curriculum and courses in the intersection of natural color\, slow food\, slow fashion\, and social practice. In 2007\, Sasha founded Permacouture Institute to encourage the exploration of regenerative design practices for fashion and textiles. Hmmm… well\, self-care is hot on the tongues of those who know best. I happen to know that incremental decision-making processes have a calming effect and then the language of stitching can come with the labels like relaxing and meditative. I include words like repetitive\, unifying\, balancing\, rhythmic. Well guess what? These words are also part of our universal design and art-language. I am crazy about how they speak to each other in my own slow-stitching practice. I believe there is a convergence here worth exploring together. \nWith this monthly gathering\, our work is not outcome-based. We will however use the elements and principles of design as meditation and design jumping-off points. Line\, Shape\, Color\, Form\, Space\, Texture\, Balance\, Rhythm\, Repetition\, Harmony\, Contrast\, and Unity. These are powerful words in design and in daily living. I believe we run the risk of going in to our weekend feeling refreshed and centered. I will encourage you to continue the process at home as well. \nYou will be provided with everything you need including a curated bundle of materials to work with which supports the element and/or principle of design for that evening. We will be working together but independently in the slowfiber classroom. Needles and threads are also provided. Simply bring yourself and perhaps a snack to share. I will have bottomless tea available. This is a non-judgmental and supportive environment and practice. I recommend you be able to stitch and thread a needle well. That is all. If you participate in all eight monthly offerings the finished outcome is enough to build a prayer flag-I am happy to do that with you as a reminder of your self care practice. \nThere is no refund for these events if you need to cancel. Please plan accordingly\, you are however welcome to give your spot away to a friend. \nI recommend- Slow Stitch by Claire Wellesley Smith\, a much-needed guide to adopting a less-is-more approach\, valuing quality over quantity\, and bringing a meaningful and thoughtful approach to textile practice. I am crazy about how they speak to each other in my own slow-stitching practice. I believe there is a convergence here worth exploring together. \nWith this monthly gathering\, our work is not outcome-based. We will however use the elements and principles of design as meditation and design jumping-off points. Line\, Shape\, Color\, Form\, Space\, Texture\, Balance\, Rhythm\, Repetition\, Harmony\, Contrast\, and Unity. These are powerful words in design and in daily living. I believe we run the risk of going in to our weekend feeling refreshed and centered. I will encourage you to continue the process at home as well. \nYou will be provided with everything you need including a curated bundle of materials to work with which supports the element and/or principle of design for that evening. We will be working together but independently in the slowfiber classroom. Needles and threads are also provided. Simply bring yourself and perhaps a snack to share. I will have bottomless tea available. This is a non-judgmental and supportive environment and practice. I recommend you be able to stitch and thread a needle well. That is all. DESCRIPTION:Breathe new life into your favorite textiles with local mending experts\, Heidi & Allison!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIf a new garment is kept for nine months longer than the typical use cycle\, it reduces the garment’s carbon footprint by 30% (The Waste and Resources Action Programme 2015). In a world enveloped by fast fashion and linear textile streams\, we encourage you to think about the longevity of your clothes and other textiles. How are you taking care of your garments/ textiles? How can you prolong the life of your second skin? \nMending is a wonderful way to transform your favorite moth-damaged\, torn\, or distressed garments\, homewares\, and other textiles. In these mending bar happy hours\, you will learn how to visibly mend with cotton thread and patching\, along with woven mending\, developing your own stitch patterns. You will be fusing fabrics together with stitch\, so they become a new cloth! You have the option of practicing boro\, sashiko\, darning\, & quilting techniques on a sampler first\, or you can jump right in and start on the item you brought to repair. \nEach student will receive an individual consultation on how best to mend one garment considering fabric\, fiber\, thread\, color\, lines\, techniques\, and more. Students will leave the workshop with a stitching sampler (optional)\, mended garment (in-progress)\, and a basic understanding of mending. Basic sewing and stitching skills are required. \nIf you don’t have a garment to mend but want to explore visible mending to create an abstract art piece\, you are also welcome to join! We often make practice samplers to explore different shapes and color stories that then get turned into pillows or wall hangings. \nMaterials provided: \n\nFabric for creating a mending sampler\nEmbroidery & pearl cotton thread\nExtra fabric for patches\nYarn for mending/darning knitted garments and textiles\nNeedles of varying types and sizes. Do not bring heavy denim\, canvas\, silk\, gauze\, t-shirts or leggings\, anything out of jersey fabric for your first project. We will talk about why these things are harder to mend and best practices for mending them.\nPatching fabric: Patching fabric should match the weight and fiber of the garment being mended. Don’t worry if you don’t have fabric\, there will be fabric available in class too. If fixing a pair of jeans with stretch\, using t-shirt fabric works well or other denim with stretch. Using cloth that has already softened and settled through wear and washing\, for instance\, pillowcases\, tea towels\, well-worn shirts\, as well as some fresh new shirting fabrics make great patches.\n1-3 skeins if using different colors (half skeins are fine) of embroidery\, sashiko\, or pearl cotton thread. Thread and yarn available for use.\nEmbroidery hoop that is a suitable size to fit the project. When picking out an embroidery hoop you want a minimum of 2” of room beyond the area being mended. Embroidery hoops will also be available to use.\nSashiko or embroidery needles. Sashiko needles will be available for purchase if you don’t have them already. Thread will also be available to use. AND/ OR\n\nA Darning Project (Woven mending) \n\nPlease bring your own woven fabric garment or textile for mending.\nYarn to use for mending. Yarn will be available for use.\nDarning egg or mushroom\, speed loom\, or tennis ball\, a rubber band or hair tie.\nDuplicate stitch/knitted mending: Bring double-pointed or regular needles in the appropriate size as well as a size or two smaller for picking up stitches and a darning needle. Circular needles in a 16” or 24” also work but aren’t ideal. Darning needles will also be available to use.\n\nRequirements: \n\nItems to be laundered first (please make sure garments are clean and mostly wrinkle-free!)\nWoolen items with moth holes must be sealed in a bag\, frozen for 48 hours to kill any potential larvae\n\nCovid-19 Protocol: Please note that each Fibershed workshop may have different covid-19 protocols based on the teacher’s requests. \nDue to the continued uncertainty and unpredictability of Covid\, and in order to keep everyone safe\, we require all participants to wear masks (double-layer fabric mask or a proper n-95) and practice 6’ social distancing. DESCRIPTION:Join Pia for a sewing workshop at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA \nBring your machine (or rent a machine from Pia for $10 for the day) and learn the very basics of machine sewing. Six students maximum. \nAfter practicing sewing straight\, threading\, spooling bobbins\, understanding seam allowance\, understanding thread tension\, how to iron a seam\, how to pin\, choosing fabric\, problem solving and all else basic\, we’ll be ready to tackle our first project—a tote bag. \nPia will supply the pattern. Please bring your own canvas-weight fabrics. DESCRIPTION:Learn to create a plaited-weave basket like those traditionally made in the Netherlands\, France and Poland \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will learn to make this elegant and unusual plaited-weave basket that is found in the Netherlands\, France and Poland. “Tatza” (properly spelled taca) is a Polish term for breadbasket\, for which use this basket is well-suited. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the Bay Model in Sausalito\, Lake County Museum\, and another is in the collection of the Oakland Museum. You can also visit a basketry plant garden Charlie has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross. Using locally foraged plant material rich with tannins and wool fabric milled in New England\, you will learn the history and techniques used to create an eco printed piece\, while creating your own\, truly unique piece. The five Saturday sessions\, as well as the invitation to work on your own time\, will offer you the space to complete a 10” x 14’’ woven tapestry. \nThe guiding intention in this process will be to further develop one’s own aesthetic sensibilities\, follow one’s inspiration\, as well as an opportunity to delve into creative practice\, investigation\, and play. \nMaterials will include a generous array of beautiful all-natural fibers and an abundant rainbow of plant-dyed wool. DESCRIPTION:This is a 4 session in-person workshop. \nDATES/TIMES \n4 Saturdays\, February 25 – March 18\, 2023; 11:00am – 12:00pm \nCOST \n$100 \nLEVEL \nIntermediate/Advanced – Students should be confident with knit\, knitting in the round\, knitting stripes\, decreasing and pattern reading. \nMATERIALS (not included) \n\n2 skeins of fingering weight yarn in highly contrasting colors. Strongly recommended to be NOT superwash yarns. We love Biches et Buches le Petite Lambswool for this project!\nNeedle Size US 2.5 OR 3 – either a long circular for magic loop\, DPNs or shorties.\nPattern\n\nDETAILS \nMosaic is one of my favorite forms of colorwork! You can create a diversity of incredible patterns with more simplicity than traditional colorwork. These mitts combine a very basic stranded technique for the cuff and then move into the mosaic colorwork for the body of the mitten. \nLearn how to work these 2 styles of colorwork\, in addition to a thumb gusset and decreasing in pattern! Each 1 hour session will focus on a new technique! \nHOMEWORK\nPurchase pattern. Pick your size and cast on the number stitches called for.
