SUMMARY:"Sympoeisis: making with" Opening Reception by SoCal Fibershed
DESCRIPTION:The long-awaited So Cal Fibershed art show is coming! \nThis exhibition explores how one of humanity’s oldest craft and industrial forms––the making of clothing––has shaped our relationship to the land\, our bodies\, and each other. \nFor thousands of years\, people have transformed animal- and plant-based fiber to craft garments that clothed and protected their bodies\, offered decoration\, and ultimately engendered a radical and disruptive transformation of the earth\, cultures\, and economies. Many of us recognize fashion as aspirational\, highly profitable\, and innovative\, yet clothing’s humble origins\, necessity\, and profound implications for our wellbeing and that of the earth is under-appreciated\, and often feels mysterious. Fiber-based work embodies generations of cultural skills and concepts; our disconnections from the sources of the material we wear and the knowledge of how that material is transformed is a rupture of our natural relationships to the earth and each other. \nThis intimate exhibit is designed as a journey through local ecosystems and craft traditions\, drawing connections between soil\, plant\, animal\, work\, hand\, and body. \nSaturday\, February 25\, 2023\nOpening Reception 2 – 5 pm\nSympoeisis: making with\nat Studio 203 in Los Angeles\, CA 90034 \nExhibit runs through April 8\, 2023. \nThe exhibit is sponsored by Material Encounters\, fiscal sponsorship provided by SIMA Studios.

We are working and learning within traditional Coast Miwok Territory and collaborating with tribal community members to support\, enhance\, and care for essential plant populations that are key for the health of the ecosystem and multi-millennia honed agricultural practices. \nOur small farm includes an array of crops from multiple ancestral lines and long classical breeding histories\, all of which we grow seasonally for pigment\, dye\, and fiber. The crops we tend and harvest are used to support an array of farm-to-fashion activities\, ethnobotanical practice\, and skill building workshops that we offer to the community. We provide scholarships and fellowships to support the deepening of our cross cultural learning and appreciation for people and land.

SUMMARY:Mushroom Dyes of the Northern California Fungal Fibershed with Alissa Allen
DESCRIPTION:Join mushroom dye expert Alissa Allen for an immersive 3-day course at the Fibershed Learning Center near Point Reyes Station \nThis course offers a rare opportunity to spend three full days exploring mushroom and lichen dyes and focusing on our regional fungal dye palette with Alissa Allen\, a highly experienced educator. We will meet from 9 am to 4 pm each day. Details about location and what to bring will be included in your confirmation email. Maximum class size is 15 students. \nDay 1: Foraging & Testing\nWe will meet at the Fibershed Learning Center for introductions and a course overview\, then go for a walk together and talk about mushroom ecology and habitats\, and observe fungi in nature. After returning to the Learning Center we will discuss the mushrooms we have collected and then test and document the potential dye mushrooms among our collection\, plus make some spore prints. Students will take home test cards and samples from our dye and spore print experiments. \nDay 2: Extracting for Optimal Results\nAlissa will be demonstrating how to dye a regional rainbow from mushrooms and lichens that she has collected\, and how each fungal pigment type works differently with the local water and various modifiers. Students will receive yarn samples plus a recipe card for every color of yarn in our regional rainbow. \nDay 3: Dye Your Own Fiber\nOur final day is focused on dyeing your own fiber (mushroom dyes provided). You’ll want to bring animal (protein) fibers in small 1 oz parcels — clean\, weighed and labeled with at least your initials. Fiber should be unmordanted\, in the form of yarn\, bats\, hankies\, fabric\, or finished pieces. We will dye at least 6 of these 1 oz parcels per person. Bring more or slightly larger pieces too\, as there will likely be ample additional dye available. \nThis day is dedicated to taking a more playful approach\, which Alissa believes is essential to learning. We will work with larger quantities\, observe color variations on different fibers\, mordant in the pot\, and take home enough mushroom-dyed fiber for a project. \nIf you’d like to take home leftover dye\, bring containers with lids. There will be likely be both small amounts and larger amounts available. \nEnroll here: eventbrite.com/e/483987127527 \n\nTuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends\nFibershed is offering two scholarships to most workshops; one scholarship if it’s a small class. In addition to scholarships for tuition\, we are offering a limited number of stipends for transportation and/or childcare. If you would not otherwise be able to attend\, and would like to be considered as a scholarship and/or stipend recipient\, please answer a few brief questions on this Google Form. Responses will be reviewed by Learning Center staff and kept strictly confidential. \n\nAlissa Allen was introduced to mushroom hunting as a child. In 1998 she attended her first wild mushroom show\, hosted by Seattle’s Puget Sound Mycological Society and was immediately hooked. She has been a volunteer\, student\, and teacher of mycology ever since. \nIn 2012\, Alissa founded Mycopigments as a program to bring mycology to fiber artists and fiber artists to mycology. Since its inception\, she has led hundreds of students\, in three countries and twenty-five states\, through the steps of exploring and celebrating their regional fungi through the lens of dye research. \nIn 2015\, Alissa created Mushroom and Lichen Dyers United and the Mushroom Dyers Trading Post discussion groups\, as a platform to mentor\, connect\, and facilitate study between her students and folks with less access to her classes. These groups\, along with her prolific workshop offerings\, writings\, and informational dye booths\, have brought together a vibrant community of over 30\,000 members.\nThis year Alissa was honored to host the 19th International Fungi and Fiber Symposium in Port Townsend WA. During this week-long event\, students and teachers from all over the world gathered to share their knowledge. \nThough her teachings are centered around regional fungal dye palettes\, her overall mission is to inspire people to engage more deeply with nature. She believes when we engage our senses to explore the natural world\, we form deeper connections that lead to healthier communities and propel us to care for our planet. \nTo read more about her work\, visit mycopigments.com. \n\nBONUS: The Clothing Swap Closet is now open during workshops and events at the Fibershed Learning Center! \nVisit the Clothing Swap Closet when you attend a workshop or event at the Learning Center and exchange your natural fiber garments and accessories. SUMMARY:The Colonial Climate Crisis: Sustainable Fashion Edition
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special online lecture with Dominique Drakeford!\nCalling our current socio-ecological crisis “global warming” or “climate change” is insufficient. We are experiencing a Colonial Climate Crisis. This term\, coined by our colleague Dominique Drakeford\, is an avenue to discuss urgent issues within the sustainability movement. \nJoin us on April 3 for a special online lecture by Dominique to explore the intersections of sustainability\, colonization\, the climate crisis\, and fashion systems. This special introductory lecture is a prerequisite to learning about the root issues of unsustainability and the ecosystem that keeps that engine well-oiled and active. \nLanguage is a foundational pillar in how we design equitable systems\, planting the seed that nurtures an intolerance for toxic Western European discourse on sustainability and environmentalism — especially in one of the most complex\, impressionable\, and profitable industries: FASHION. It’s time to decolonize the sustainability and fashion lexicon from a cultural vantage point. \nDominique Drakeford is a mother\, non-traditional educator\, writer\, independent researcher\, and creative storyteller that has been a leader in reimagining sustainability for the past 15+ years | Co-founder Sustainable Brooklyn. Learn more about her here.

SUMMARY:Eco Printing with Cory Gunter Brown of Earth My Body
DESCRIPTION:…a sacred\, somatic\, and sensuous practice \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, for a workshop taught by Cory Gunter Brown that is as much about crafting beautiful textiles as it is about forming deep relationships with the land\, seasons\, and life cycles of the materials we work with. \nThis introduction to Eco Printing is formed with intention\, to bring us back to wonder and reverence\, interweaving in relationship with dye plants\, fiber animals\, and the lands they grow from. This practice is an open door inviting us into a deeper understanding of the ways in which this earth nourishes and cares for us and we may do the same in turn. \nWe’ll work with Fibershed Climate Beneficial wool\, plus silks\, several different wild gathered plants (including eucalyptus)\, and optional iron mordant\, to make living breathing textiles in an expressive and ethical way. You’ll learn how some plants interact differently with different textiles\, how to find out if a plant will work for eco printing\, and when to work with iron mordant. \nYou’ll finish class with a Climate Beneficial wool piece that can be used as a wall hanging\, table runner\, or altar cloth and a few pure silk pieces that can be used in a variety of ways as well. \nCory Gunter Brown has been practicing and teaching Eco Printing for thirteen years. She learned from her teacher India Flint\, one of the fairy godmothers of this magical practice\, and from the plants and fibers themselves. \nThe workshop runs from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday\, and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. Limited to 10 students. \nEnroll here: eventbrite.com/e/516975275967 \nPlease Bring: \n\nSun hat\, warm layers\nPersonal lunch\, snacks and beverages (various teas will be provided)\nPruning shears\, if you have them\, or sturdy scissors\nSitting cushion / camp chair\nYou’re welcome to bring any plants you might want to try\, and I encourage any of the ones listed here if you have them around: fresh avocado pits\, eucalyptus leaves/bark (windfall)\, rose leaves\, oak leaves (not coast live oak)\, Japanese maple/maple leaves\, black walnut leaves\, onion skins\, dry curly dock seed (on stems)\, coreopsis flowers\, purple plum leaves\, manzanita leaves/bark (windfall)\, sweetgum leaves\, geranium leaves\, blackberry leaves\n\n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 30 before the event. If you cancel after 30 days before the event\, we are unable to provide refunds unless we can fill your space from the waitlist. If someone who is waitlisted purchases your space\, we will refund your ticket\, minus the Eventbrite fees. Otherwise there will be no refunds. You are also welcome to transfer your ticket to someone who wishes to purchase it directly from you. \n\nFibershed Scholarship Program for Tuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends\nFibershed is offering two scholarships to most workshops; one scholarship if it’s a small class. \n\nCory Gunter Brown is an artisan and empath who has practiced the entwined arts of sacred adornment and the handmade her whole life. She was born and raised in East Oakland and comes from a radical and creative family of dancers\, machinists\, artists\, and activists. She’s learned the most powerful and beautiful truths in her life by listening to the voice of the Earth\, the voices of Indigenous Peoples present and past\, and her own inner voice. \nThrough a decolonial lens\, her work with natural dyes\, and her relationship with the living Earth\, she’s come to understand that for every toxic\, abusive reality happening on this Earth\, there is another way that is far more compassionate\, elegant\, and balanced within the cycle of life. She’s learned that our bodies are an extension of the Earth and the Earth is an extension of our bodies\, and her choices in life now flow from that knowing. \nCory spent ten years co-creating The Moon\, an Oakland based feminine clothing line made by local hands with natural fibers and natural dyes. She is now teaching natural dye workshops to adults and children\, making naturally dyed textiles\, plant infused body oils\, and very tiny baskets from invasive plants. Working with plants has changed her life. \nInstagram: @_.earth.my.body._ \nWebsite: earthmybody.com \n \n\nBONUS: The Clothing Swap Closet is now open during workshops and events at the Fibershed Learning Center! \nVisit the Clothing Swap Closet when you attend a workshop or event at the Learning Center and exchange your natural fiber garments and accessories.
