SUMMARY:Make a Coiled Rush Basket with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will learn to rush (Juncus) or grass as the foundation for the beginning of a small bowl-shaped basket. As binder\, we will use peeled and split willow grown and prepared by Charlie. Participants will also practice splitting willow shoots to make weavers. \nParticipants must bring: scissors or wire clippers\, pocket knife\, water bowl plus any personal snacks\, lunch and beverages. \nMaximum 12 students. \n_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ \nFibershed Scholarship Program for Tuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends \nFibershed is offering one scholarship per workshop. Service dogs are permitted. \n\n\n\n\nCharlie Kennard of San Anselmo is a long-time basket weaver and student of California Indian and other traditional basketry techniques of the world. He has taught for the Point Reyes Field Institute\, East Bay Regional Parks Botanic Garden\, Fibershed\, the Laguna Center and in many schools and at teacher trainings. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the Bay Model in Sausalito\, Lake County Museum\, and another is in the collection of the Oakland Museum. You can also visit a basketry plant garden Charlie has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross. In partnership with Alabama Chanin and The School of Making\, we connect people\, places\, and materials through design\, making\, and education—with cultural heritage\, craft preservation\, and creative placemaking at the core of our work. \nThis is an exciting time for Project Threadways. In October 2023\, founder Natalie Chanin announced that Project Threadways\, Alabama Chanin\, and The School of Making were coming together as a single not-for-profit entity.
