DESCRIPTION:Robin L Bernstein will be exhibiting a selection of works from Beauty and Terror\, an 18 work series about the Holocaust\, as well as work about contemporary issues. Each artwork is made by obsessively pressing thousands of tiny cut pieces of colored string into wax. \nThe pieces in Beauty and Terror range from major aspects and lesser known crimes of the Holocaust as well as redemptive stories and heroic acts of resistance. Believing that art has the power to shift human behavior\, Bernstein chooses subject matter\, materials\, and processes that support this idea. Her subject matter combined with her artistic technique is her way of shouting from the rooftops that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. These pieces exist in part to help prevent historical amnesia and to push back against rising autocracies around the world.

DESCRIPTION:Join us\, at beautiful Windrush Farm\, for a two-afternoon\, beginning wheel-spinning workshop and learn about the fascinating art of yarn-making! \nThis is an introductory two-afternoon class on how to spin on a Louet wheel with Mimi Luebbermann and Marlie de Swart. This first class begins on Saturday afternoon at Windrush Farm where you will learn to guide the wheel and twist roving into a continuous thread. The second class is on Sunday afternoon as you learn to develop control of the wheel\, produce yarn confidently and\, by the end of the afternoon\, make your own skein of two-ply yarn to take home. All materials are included. She is one of the first board members of Fibershed and\, until recently\, owned and operated the Black Mountain Weavers Store (an artist cooperative) in Point Reyes Station. Marlie’s passion is everything fiber\, especially local fiber.  \nMimi Luebbermann moved to Chileno Valley in 1995 with the dream of living quietly on a farm. Instead\, she ended up crazy about fiber and determined to create a fiber farm. Now\, sheep\, alpacas\, llamas\, goats\, and rabbits all contribute to the Windrush Farm yarns. As a dedicated spinner\, she works to educate people about the connection between fiber animals and yarn\, through school field trips\, her farmers market booth\, private tours\, and spinning classes to meet the animals and learn the process of transforming fleece to yarn. SUMMARY:Weaving on a Mayan Backstrap Loom with Sari Monroy Solís
DESCRIPTION:Learn to weave on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home \nThe backstrap loom goes back thousands of years and is one of the oldest known tools in the world. It evolved in several places\, including the Western highlands of Guatemala. Mayan weavers continue to make traditional clothing for everyday use and for the textile market using this traditional loom. \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will learning this ancient skill from Sari Monroy Solís\, whose paternal family comes from the Valle de Panchoy area of Sacatepequez\, Guatemala (now called Antigua and San Antonio Aguas Calientes). To connect to her Kaqchikel community and elders\, Sari weaves using the backstrap loom and teaches this art to others\, especially fellow diaspora. \nThe class will focus on the traditional Mayan backstrap loom. You will learn on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home. The class will begin by learning how the body connects to the loom\, the parts of the loom\, and how to start plain weaving. Once comfortable with plain weaving\, you will learn how to do single-side brocade using common motifs. You will learn the names and origins of these motifs and how to design your own. \nReady to start weaving? Traditional weaving\, restoring güipiles\, and Mayan embroidery are some of the ways she maintains her connection to her community of elders in Guatemala. Foraging\, natural dyes\, and plant medicine are some of the ways she honors her maternal Indigenous lineage in Veracruz. She is also an avid mender\, knitter\, and upcycler of fabrics. SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibit - Beauty and Terror by Robin Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Robin L Bernstein will be exhibiting a selection of works from Beauty and Terror\, an 18 work series about the Holocaust\, as well as work about contemporary issues. Each artwork is made by obsessively pressing thousands of tiny cut pieces of colored string into wax. \nThe pieces in Beauty and Terror range from major aspects and lesser known crimes of the Holocaust as well as redemptive stories and heroic acts of resistance. Believing that art has the power to shift human behavior\, Bernstein chooses subject matter\, materials\, and processes that support this idea. Her subject matter combined with her artistic technique is her way of shouting from the rooftops that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. These pieces exist in part to help prevent historical amnesia and to push back against rising autocracies around the world.

SUMMARY:Community Fresh-Leaf Indigo Dye Bath
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Fibershed Learning Center\, for a community dye bath with the last of this season’s fresh-leaf indigo! Have a look in your closet for some pale protein fibers (ivory\, white\, gray\, yellow) — your old wool hat or gloves\, silk ties\, an old silk scarf or handkerchief\, or your little ball of wool yarn. Together\, we will hand-pick fresh leaf indigo and make a cold indigo dye bath for protein fibers. Everyone will go home with newly dyed materials and you will learn how to make your own cold indigo bath at home. There will also be information on how/where to source your indigo plants for spring 2024. \nList of fibers that will work with this indigo process: alpaca\, angora\, llama\, silk\, wool\, etc. (any animal-based fiber) \nWhat to bring: Please bring personal snacks\, lunch\, and your water bottle (a selection of teas will be served). Fresh indigo leaves will be provided\, and you are encouraged to look through your closet for old silk scarves\, handkerchiefs\, etc. We ask that people limit items to 3-4 small items per person. Tip: Most secondhand shops have old silk handkerchiefs\, mini-skeins\, and scarves which are light and perfect for dyeing! If you have a portable and clean blender we can borrow for the event\, please bring it. We will have a soapy bath for cleaning protein fibers when you arrive but pre-washing your fibers is best. \nYouth participants are welcome (see youth ticket) so long as they are accompanied by their parent/guardian during the event. This class will introduce more advanced spinning techniques and builds on the skills learned in Beginning Spinning. You will learn to spin worsted and woolens to create yarns for knitting\, crochet\, or weaving. You will also spin different fibers including alpaca and mohair\, as well as explore plying techniques such as: two-ply\, three-ply\, and Navajo or chain-plying. DESCRIPTION:Sewing Lab is a 4-week session with a 2.5-hour class per week. There are usually one daytime Sewing Labs and one evening Sewing Labs during each session. \nEach week a new sewing technique is demonstrated.  The demonstration is usually 15 minutes long and cover basic sewing techniques. If you are brand new to sewing\, I highly recommend that you take a private class initially\, to acquaint yourself with your machine and learn the very basics of machine sewing. I offer an introduction package of a two-hour private class + one Sewing Lab four-week session for $395. There is a library of patterns of simple beginner projects available for free in the classroom. Some sewing supplies are available for purchase at the studio. SUMMARY:Woolgathering 2023: Intro to Plying
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Melissa Harris \n10am-3pm \n$85 plus $10 materials fee \nLimit: 10 \nBring a brown bag lunch \nLearn to spin\, using one of our spinning wheels and local wool. You will learn how to spin\, as well as basic wheel mechanics and an introduction to turning fiber into your own handspun yarn. \nThis is a continuing level class which will focus on plying singles to create a thicker\, balanced yarn.\nPlying gives spinners more options for using their yarns. We will also be trying different numbers and types of plies\, including novelty combinations.\n\nPrerequisites: Beginning Spinning or equivalent. You need to be able to spin a single. You do not need to have any plying experience.\nLet us know if you need to borrow a spinning wheel. If you are bringing your own wheel\, please be sure to practice on it and make sure that it is in working order.\n\nPlease bring: bobbins of singles\, and at least one empty bobbin to ply onto. Other tools that are nice to have: niddy-noddy\, lazy kate\, hand cards\, notebook\, pencil\, scissors\, oil.
