SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibit - Beauty and Terror by Robin Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Robin L Bernstein will be exhibiting a selection of works from Beauty and Terror\, an 18 work series about the Holocaust\, as well as work about contemporary issues. Each artwork is made by obsessively pressing thousands of tiny cut pieces of colored string into wax. \nThe pieces in Beauty and Terror range from major aspects and lesser known crimes of the Holocaust as well as redemptive stories and heroic acts of resistance. Believing that art has the power to shift human behavior\, Bernstein chooses subject matter\, materials\, and processes that support this idea. Her subject matter combined with her artistic technique is her way of shouting from the rooftops that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. These pieces exist in part to help prevent historical amnesia and to push back against rising autocracies around the world.

SUMMARY:Botanical Printing with Mayumi Fujio
DESCRIPTION:Learn to create beautiful botanical prints using fresh leaves\, flowers\, and minerals. \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where Mayumi will introduce botanical printing using fresh leaves and flowers\, along with minerals\, to transfer natural colors and shapes from plants onto fiber. It is like printing a photo directly from the leaves to the fabric. This introductory class will give you an understanding of dye plants and our relationship with nature. You will go home with a beautiful one-of-a-kind silk scarf (11″ x 64″) dyed with fresh plants from the Bay Area. Fresh leaves and flowers will be provided\, but you are also encouraged to bring leaves and flowers from your garden\, making it a personal scarf. \nEnroll here: mayumi-fujio.eventbrite.com \nMayumi Fujio is a fiber artist creating botanical printed art. The history of botanical printing is still young so she is constantly experimenting with new ideas. She has studied Ikebana\, field botany\, as well as edible and medicinal plants. This helps to create an aesthetic that is in harmony with nature and beauty. She uses all-natural plant and mushroom dyes to get vibrant colors for the background of her textiles\, and\, for the leaf patterns\, she grows and harvests fresh plants from around the San Francisco Bay Area. She aims to create sustainable art using nature. \nMayumi’s art pieces are sold at Asian Art Museum\, Seattle Art Museum\, San Jose Textile Museum\, and other art venues. She won an award at the prestigious Mill Valley Arts Festival in 2022. \nFind out more about Mayumi’s work at: mayumix.com \nStudents should bring: personal snacks\, lunch and beverages (a selection of teas will be served). Fresh leaves and flowers will be provided\, but you are also encouraged to bring leaves and flowers from your garden\, making it a personal scarf. \nThis class will involve walking around the Fibershed Learning Center and garden which has some mixed terrain areas. \n\nCancellation Policy: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) are available up to 30 days before the event. If you cancel after 30 days before the event we can only offer a refund (minus Eventbrite fees) if we are able to fill your space from the waitlist. Otherwise\, there will be no refunds or transfers. \n\nTuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends\nFibershed is offering two scholarships to most workshops; one scholarship if it’s a small class. In addition to scholarships for tuition\, we are offering a limited number of stipends for transportation and/or childcare. If you would not otherwise be able to attend\, and would like to be considered as a scholarship and/or stipend recipient\, please answer a few brief questions on this Google Form. Responses will be reviewed by Learning Center staff and kept strictly confidential. \n\nBONUS: The Clothing Swap Closet is now open during workshops and events at the Fibershed Learning Center! \nVisit the Clothing Swap Closet when you attend a workshop or event at the Learning Center and exchange your natural fiber garments and accessories. Your clothing contributions must be clean and in good condition. Each contribution entitles you to choose one item of comparable value. \nYou may depart up to an hour after the workshop ends\, to allow time to browse and try on items in the closet\, and make your trade!

SUMMARY:Community Fresh-Leaf Indigo Dye Bath
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Fibershed Learning Center\, for a community dye bath with the last of this season’s fresh-leaf indigo! Have a look in your closet for some pale protein fibers (ivory\, white\, gray\, yellow) — your old wool hat or gloves\, silk ties\, an old silk scarf or handkerchief\, or your little ball of wool yarn. Together\, we will hand-pick fresh leaf indigo and make a cold indigo dye bath for protein fibers. Everyone will go home with newly dyed materials and you will learn how to make your own cold indigo bath at home. There will also be information on how/where to source your indigo plants for spring 2024. \nList of fibers that will work with this indigo process: alpaca\, angora\, llama\, silk\, wool\, etc. (any animal-based fiber) \nWhat to bring: Please bring personal snacks\, lunch\, and your water bottle (a selection of teas will be served). Fresh indigo leaves will be provided\, and you are encouraged to look through your closet for old silk scarves\, handkerchiefs\, etc. We ask that people limit items to 3-4 small items per person. Tip: Most secondhand shops have old silk handkerchiefs\, mini-skeins\, and scarves which are light and perfect for dyeing! If you have a portable and clean blender we can borrow for the event\, please bring it. We will have a soapy bath for cleaning protein fibers when you arrive but pre-washing your fibers is best. \nYouth participants are welcome (see youth ticket) so long as they are accompanied by their parent/guardian during the event. Please note this process will not work on cellulose fibers (cotton\, linen\, hemp) but stay tuned for other events that focus on cellulose (plant-based) fibers. \nSuggestions for where to source a variety of secondhand silk\, wool\, and other protein fibers: The Legacy Thriftstore (Santa Rosa)\, Through the Decades (San Francisco)\, and other local stores.

SUMMARY:Spinning Like a Pro with Marlie de Swart and Mimi Luebbermann
DESCRIPTION:Join us at beautiful Windrush Farm for a class on advanced spinning techniques with Marlie de Swart and Mimi Luebbermann. This class will introduce more advanced spinning techniques and builds on the skills learned in Beginning Spinning. You will learn to spin worsted and woolens to create yarns for knitting\, crochet\, or weaving. You will also spin different fibers including alpaca and mohair\, as well as explore plying techniques such as: two-ply\, three-ply\, and Navajo or chain-plying. Once you finish this class\, you will have gathered the skills for confident spinning. All materials are included. A Louet wheel is included for use during class. \nClass schedule: \n\nSaturday\, October 7\, 1:00pm – 4:00pm\n\nLocation: Windrush Farm\, 2263 Chileno Valley Road\, Petaluma\, CA 94952 \nPlease bring: Personal snacks and beverages. Windrush Farm is in a rural location outside Petaluma. The farm is located on flat but uneven terrain (please bring sturdy shoes). \nRegistration and Information: eventbrite.com/e/694425454227 \n\nAbout the Instructors: \nMarlie de Swart learned to spin as a young child at her mother’s knee in Holland\, and she has been doing it ever since. For the last twenty-two years\, she has been teaching spinning at Windrush Farm Fiber School in the Chileno Valley. Her book “Knitting Woolscapes\, Designs Inspired by Coastal Marin Wool” has many sweater patterns developed to be made with hand-spun yarn. She is one of the first board members of Fibershed and\, until recently\, owned and operated the Black Mountain Weavers Store (an artist cooperative) in Point Reyes Station. Marlie’s passion is everything fiber\, especially local fiber. \nMimi Luebbermann moved to Chileno Valley in 1995 with the dream of living quietly on a farm. Instead\, she ended up crazy about fiber and determined to create a fiber farm. Now\, sheep\, alpacas\, llamas\, goats\, and rabbits all contribute to the Windrush Farm yarns. As a dedicated spinner\, she works to educate people about the connection between fiber animals and yarn\, through school field trips\, her farmers market booth\, private tours\, and spinning classes to meet the animals and learn the process of transforming fleece to yarn. It is an endlessly fascinating life. \nInstagram: @windrushfarmpetaluma \nWeb: windrushfarm.wordpress.com \n\nTuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends:\nFibershed is offering one to two scholarships to most workshops.
