Fibreshed develops place-based regional fibre and natural dye systems that generate necessary forms of material culture\, while simultaneously regenerating lost carbon stocks in our soils and providing meaningful livelihoods. Fibershed founder Rebecca Burgess has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans within the Northern California fibreshed and is piloting a regenerative fibre systems model at a community scale. Rebecca will talk about starting a fibreshed and discuss her involvement with Fibreshed Field School\, a program led by Emily Smith and run by the Shumka Centre for Creative Entrepreneurship.

DESCRIPTION:Indigo extract is a versatile saturating pigment\, an ideal art medium. DESCRIPTION:This panel was formed to create an open\, amicable\, and educational discussion regarding wildlife management\, land conversion\, local policy & livestock predation\, specifically addressing how these issues affect our local food supply & grazing for fire fuel load reduction. \nThis is a grassroots effort to gather information\, experience\, and knowledge in a manner that honors and respects all voices. To bring together all parties of an emotionally heightened\, culturally fractioning topic in order to provide education\, while reducing the animosity between sides. We are attempting to create a methodology and template in which we can experience and consider a viewpoint that is different from our own while realizing that we can agree with aspects of both sides of the argument. We (the general public\, farmers\, researchers\, and governmental entities) are all connected and will never move forward in the discussion of these topics without flexibility\, respect\, and empathy. \nMoving forward\, we hope to develop two more panels to step this grassroots effort into creating more well-rounded policy & to provide management systems that support all different parties involved. \nClick here to register via Zoom

She has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans in the Northern California Fibershed to pilot an innovative fiber systems model at the community scale. Her project has become internationally recognized with over 53 Fibershed communities now in existence. \nRebecca began the Fibershed journey in 2010 with a commitment “to develop and wear a prototype wardrobe whose dyes\, fibers and labor were sourced from a region no larger than 150 miles from the project’s headquarters. Burgess had no expected outcomes from the personal challenge other than to reduce her own ecological footprint and maybe inspire a few others. \nShe teamed up with a talented group of farmers and artisans to build the wardrobe by hand\, as manufacturing equipment had all been lost from the landscape more than 20 years ago. The goal was to illuminate that regionally grown fibers\, natural dyes\, and local talent was still in great enough existence to provide this most basic human necessity—our clothes. Within months\, the project became a movement\, and the word Fibershed and the working concept behind it spread to regions across the globe. \n  \nFEEDBACK FRIDAY \nIf you are not familiar with FEEDBACK FRIDAY\, every week\, we speak with dyers\, artists\, scientists and scholars about our favorite topic\, natural dyeing and color. DESCRIPTION:Join Sandy Fisher of Chico Flax for an online presentation about growing and processing flax to make linen. Sandy will first show images of this year’s crop—growing\, harvesting\, retting in the field and in the tanks\, and drying on the lines before processing. Her passion for textiles began as a child when she learned to knit. She continued her love of textiles in college\, graduating with a BA degree in Art\, emphasis in Weaving from CSU\, Chico. Over the course of her career Sandy has shared her knowledge through both private and public instruction. In 2012 Sandy was looking for a locally sourced fiber other than wool to make a unique fabric that would be called Chico Cloth. She and other community members started experiments in growing fiber flax in Northern California. In 2016 Chico Flax joined Fibershed’s Producer Program and in 2018 Chico Flax LLC was formed. Chico Flax is piloting regenerative production and processing systems for flax in our region\, bringing a new industry and social enterprise to Northern California in collaboration with local community members\, farmers\, artisans and institutions. DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: This is a 3 Day Workshop; July 3\, 4 + 5; 10 am – 4 pm \n  \nLOCATION: Credo High School; 1300 Valley House Dr. Suite 100 \n  \nThis 3-day workshop will focus on designing and making one-piece fashionable and wearable nuno felted garments; e.g. dresses or skirts. \nStudents will explore the various textures and rough surfaces using different techniques and materials. \n  \nYou will learn how to add pleats to achieve extra float accents into your project. \n  \nStudents will learn how to enlarge a normal pattern into a felting pattern using the simple basic techniques that Sharit uses in her work. This is a very effective method that will help them to develop your own pattern template that will be a custom fit for you. \nMost importantly you will learn how to work with the direction of the wool to achieve a personalized style. The direction of the wool is very important to determine the shrinkage\, the styling and the shaping of the felted finished garments. \n  \nAll materials included. \n  \nAges: 18+ Skill Requirements: Students will be working on their feet for extended periods of time\, and using their body to felt the wool.
