DESCRIPTION:Do your clothes help or harm?\nThe essence of borrowing is an agreement to respect\, care for\, and be held accountable for what we are receiving in our temporary custody. \nAlthough today’s clothing relies on transnational supply chains\, petroleum-based materials\, and land and labor exploitation\, there is incredible potential to make shifts to a system that originates from the soil and supports the longevity and health of our ecosystems and communities. Designers have a unique place in these systems to turn natural materials grown on our regional landscapes into beautiful\, long-lasting goods that serve our communities. As temporary custodians of the materials we make and use in our daily lives\, we have an obligation to respect and care for these soil-born materials with the promise to return them back to the soil again. \nThe ‘Borrowed from the Soil’ Exhibition will showcase the final designs from local makers partaking in Fibershed’s year-long Design Challenge. Each designer is exploring how their design choices can embed longevity\, compostability\, and respect for the soil while using local natural fibers grown on Climate Beneficial farms and ranches. SUMMARY:Make a Coiled Rush Basket with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will learn to rush (Juncus) or grass as the foundation for the beginning of a small bowl-shaped basket. As binder\, we will use peeled and split willow grown and prepared by Charlie. Participants will also practice splitting willow shoots to make weavers. \nParticipants must bring: scissors or wire clippers\, pocket knife\, water bowl plus any personal snacks\, lunch and beverages. \nMaximum 12 students. \n_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ \nFibershed Scholarship Program for Tuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends \nFibershed is offering one scholarship per workshop. If you would not otherwise be able to attend\, and would like to be considered as a scholarship recipient\, please answer a few brief questions on our Scholarship Application. Service dogs are permitted. \n\n\n\n\nCharlie Kennard of San Anselmo is a long-time basket weaver and student of California Indian and other traditional basketry techniques of the world. He has taught for the Point Reyes Field Institute\, East Bay Regional Parks Botanic Garden\, Fibershed\, the Laguna Center and in many schools and at teacher trainings. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the Bay Model in Sausalito\, Lake County Museum\, and another is in the collection of the Oakland Museum. You can also visit a basketry plant garden Charlie has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross.
