SUMMARY:Papermaking with Kozo with Steph Rue
DESCRIPTION:Register here\nIn this one-day workshop\, explore the many possibilities of paper mulberry\, a strong fiber that is used primarily in East Asian papermaking. \nIn this one-day papermaking workshop at the Fibershed Learning Center\, we will explore the many possibilities of paper mulberry (Japanese: Kozo; Korean: dak)\, a strong fiber that is used primarily in East Asian papermaking. The Fibershed Learning Center is located on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA. \nIn the morning\, we will work with raw fiber in various states and learn how to process it for papermaking. We’ll scrape\, beat\, and cook fiber\, and then prepare our vats to make paper. We will also prepare natural formation aid\, which is added to the vat during sheetforming. \nDuring lunch/in the afternoon\, students will have the opportunity to forage for organic materials on Fibershed grounds to use as inclusions in their paper. In the afternoon\, students will learn two methods of sheetforming using a variety of Japanese sugetas (papermaking screen and frame) and deckle boxes. \nAfter the paper is pressed\, we will discuss various ways to dry sheets as well as sculptural possibilities to create dimensional forms and textures with wet sheets and pulp. Students will also learn how to work with kozo to make bark lace and bark thread. \nStudents will go home with wet sheets and will be instructed on how to dry their paper at home. The instructor will bring an array of samples of books\, papers\, sculptural works\, and artifacts made with/on kozo. Paper made by the instructor will also be available for sale during/after the workshop. \nPlease note that this is an introductory\, communal\, process-based class\, and that we will be sharing space\, tools\, and equipment. This workshop is best suited for those who like to get their hands (and sometimes feet!) wet\, and who want a very hands-on introduction to papermaking and/or a raw papermaking fiber. \nParticipants should bring: \n\nany personal lunch\, snacks\, and beverages\nplease wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet/pulpy\, and/or bring an apron.\noptional: materials to include in your paper such as photographs\, papers\, organic materials\, textiles\, thread\, wire\, etc.\n\nMaximum 12 students. \nInstructor bio: \nSteph Rue is an artist working primarily with handmade paper and books as her medium. She is a 2023 Living Cultures Grant Recipient through the Alliance for California Traditional Arts and a 2023 Individual Artist Fellow through the California Arts Council. After receiving her MFA degree from the University of Iowa Center for the Book\, she studied traditional Korean bookbinding\, papermaking\, and printing in South Korea through a Fulbright Research Grant in 2015-2016. Her artist books and paper works are held in a number of public and private collections\, including Yale University\, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Library\, and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Steph is a co-founder of the Korean American Artist Collective and a member of the Book/Print Artist/Scholar of Color Collective. She is also a co-founder of Hanji Edition\, a publisher of fine art and print works with/on hanji (Korean handmade paper). Steph teaches workshops and classes on papermaking\, bookmaking\, and related arts\, with an emphasis on East Asian techniques\, and has taught at Mills College\, Penland School of Craft\, and the San Francisco Center for the Book. Steph lives\, works\, and teaches out of her home studio in Sacramento\, CA.\nLearn more at stephrue.com or follow on Instagram @sjrue \n_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ \nFibershed Scholarship Program \nFibershed is offering one scholarship per workshop. SUMMARY:Introduction to Crutching\, Wigging\, and Catch Pen Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register \nDates: October 11-13. Friday from 12-5pm\, Saturday 8am-5pm\, Sunday 8am-3pm.\nCost: Equity pricing scale ranging from $200-$400. Scholarships available. Equity pricing and scholarships available courtesy of Fibershed.\nAccommodation: Dormitory accommodation is available for an additional $20 per night. \n  \nInstruction Team  \nLead Instructor: Owner/operator of Hollenback Shearing\, Trevor Hollenback has been professionally trained and employed as a shearer in the United States\, New Zealand\, Australia\, and Austria. His primary focus in shearing is limiting stress to both the sheep and shearer. \nLindsay Hollenback will also be supporting the class this year alongside Trevor.  Her primary role will be to lead the class through group exercises and assist each student individually to keep everyone’s body limber and strong throughout each course. She has an extensive background in dance\, injury management\, yoga\, and massage therapy. \nAlison Smith is the Principal Animal Health Technician at the UC Hopland Research and Extension Center. Alison is the sheep department manager for their flock of western whiteface sheep.  She has been with HREC for 10 years and worked with sheep and goats in Mendocino County for over 20. She is also a fully licensed RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician). \nClass description: The school will feature the same immersive hands-on shearing training in a small group setting (maximum 9 students) that we utilize in our Sheep Shearing and Basic Care 101 course. This class\, however\, will be focused on the following topics: \n\nCrutching sheep\n“Crutching” is the practice of removing wool from between the legs\, around the rear end. Often farmers will want some or all of the belly wool removed in addition to the crutch\, and all of these methods will be covered so that you are prepared for any of these requests from your customers.\nWigging Sheep\n“Wigging” is the removal of wool to prevent wool blindness in sheep. In this course we will learn how to do it safely and efficiently so that you can do the same thing when you’re working out in the field.\nCatch Pen Dynamics\nThis is the most important topic of the course as far as your body is concerned. Because the crutching process takes so much less time than completely shearing a sheep\, you will physically have to handle and move many times more sheep in one day of crutching than you will in one day of shearing. In this course we will explore the methods and mindset necessary to limit the stress on your body while crutching.\nDaily Physical Fitness and Injury Prevention\nEach day before\, during\, and after class\, we will have dedicated sessions where we take you through warm-up\, stretching\, yoga\, and body care routines that have been designed specifically for sheep shearers.\nSheep Shearing Tune-Up (Time Permitting)\nIf there is extra time during the course\, we will take you through exercises to sharpen your sheep shearing skills: specifically looking at footwork and positioning of the sheep.\n\nPlease note that this course –much like Sheep Shearing and Basic Care 101– is highly physically demanding\, requiring your body to be in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. Guidance will be given to reduce discomfort\, but registrants need to be aware of the physical nature of the class and come prepared. More detailed prep information will be provided to students once they have officially enrolled in the course. \nClass prerequisites:  \n\nParticipants must have attended a shearing school/training.\nAnd/Or Participants must have shearing experience\n\nRegistration closes on October 1/when filled.
