SUMMARY:Sheep Harvesting Workshop with John O'Mara
DESCRIPTION:This event is sponsored by a Fibershed Northern California Producer or a Fibershed Affiliate. Please search for host details within the listing for more event details.\n\nTo register visit fullcirclewool.com\n\nThis is a workshop dedicated to learning how to humanely harvest sheep and make use of the whole animal. We will demonstrate how to ethically harvest and process sheep only using a knife. We will explore the many uses of organ meats\, intestines for sausage-making\, blood\, and bones in an attempt to imbue the participants with these skills to return to their lives as part of their skillsets.  We will collaboratively honor the death of the sheep and explore the many facets of our lives that are fed by our ancient relationship to sheep.  We will eat our way through the process and learn how to break down the carcasses using seam butchery which only requires a small knife.\n\nThis class is intended for people wanting to harvest their own animals\, process roadkill\, and become more familiar with how ruminants are put together\, and how our relationship to them has and continues to evolve over time. Participants will be able to take meat home\, gamble with astragalus bones\, and have the knowledge and know-how to replicate the process.\n\n*Benefits means you will get to take meat home with you\, come prepared with a cooler.  Meat will be split up amongst those who opt in.  Proceeds go to support shepherds in the village of Umm al-Khair\, in the West Bank of Palestine through the Center for Jewish Non-Violence (see cjnv.org for more info).\n\nSee event link for pricing and other details.

SUMMARY:Black Ash Pack Basket Making Weekend with Penny Hewitt
DESCRIPTION:Turn two days (March 21 & 22; 9am-5pm) at Fibershed’s Learning Center into your own pack basket and learn one of the oldest crafts in human history! \nVisit Fibershed’s Eventbrite listing to register! \nFor thousands of years baskets served as indispensable objects in every culture. Carry on the tradition and take home a beautiful\, durable and functional basket crafted from responsibly harvested\, hand-pounded black ash logs. In this workshop by Penny Hewitt at the Fibershed Learning Center in West Marin\, students will craft a traditional Adirondack-style packbasket with cedar runners\, white ash handle and adjustable webbing straps. Great for harvesting\, canoeing\, farmer’s markets\, picnic lunches and whatever else you would use a regular backpack for. This basket is made to last and be used. \nAll materials are provided to create your pack basket. The class also includes discussion on how the materials are harvested and processed. \nParticipants should bring personal snacks\, lunch\, and beverages. Coffee and tea will be provided. \nNo experience is necessary but the project does take good hand strength. \nAbout Penny: \nPenny is passionate about revitalizing and sharing traditional skills\, particularly in the form of black ash and bark basketry. She believes learning utilitarian skills can point to alternative ways of shaping a culture that fosters land\, tradition\, and community stewardship. She enjoys teaching people how to use their hands and simple tools to transform natural materials from the surrounding forests into objects of beauty that are useful in everyday life. Penny is inspired by traditions of many cultures\, and is grateful for the opportunities of connection to the land and people\, past and present\, that this craft cultivates. Her experience includes teaching workshops to all ages\, as well as crafting for income\, pleasure and to meet the needs of her homesteading life. \nwww.lazymilltreecraft.com\ninstagramhttps://www.sloydskillsgathering.com/ \nContact rhonda@fibershed.org for more information.

SUMMARY:Wildcrafternoon Children's Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Saturdays this Spring! \nJoin us at the Fibershed Learning Center for a nature-based crafting workshop series\, led by nature-based educator Èské Addams and designed especially for young learners\, age 7 and up. This is a great opportunity for your child to learn various nature-based crafting skills and to engage directly with different types of organic materials and hand tools. \n🌿 Dates & Workshop Activity Lineup: These Saturdays will be monthly–please sign up separately for each event via Eventbrite: \n\n📜 February 28: Making Paper\, Seedballs\, & Paper-pulp Sculptures\,\n📚 March 28: Bookbinding & Nature journaling\,\n🍂 April 18: Flower pressing & Nature collages\,\n🧺 May 30: Basket & Cordage weaving\,\n🍃 June 27: Eco-printing & Plant dyeing\,\n\n🌿Registration: While most other Fibershed workshops use a need-based scholarship application fee structure\, this workshop series uses a self-reporting sliding-scale approach (based on the Green Bottle model)\, which was personally designed by the teacher and is used in all of her educational offerings. \nMaximum 10 students per workshop\, so reserve your child’s spot via our 3/28 Evenbrite listing  (fees are included in the ticket cost to maximize access for all). \nTravel / Childcare Assistance: Fibershed offers limited assistance for travel and/or childcare. If you would not otherwise be able to attend a workshop due to transportation challenges or limited resources as a parent\, please apply for our Accessibility Assistance application. \nQuestions?: Email LearningCenter@fibershed.org.
