Meet live urchins and learn about oceanic dyes \nDate\nSaturday\, July 12\, 2025 \n10am – 4pm PDT \nLocation\nFibershed Learning Center \n14000 Point Reyes – Petaluma Road Point Reyes Station\, CA 94956 \nAbout the Event\nThe Fibershed Learning Center is excited to offer Seelie Studio‘s most in-depth urchin dye workshop to date! \nFor the first time\, Margaret Seelie\, the founder of Seelie Studio\, will show you the entire urchin dye process\, beginning with how we source the urchins\, process their bodies with care\, and create the dye. You’ll have your own dye station where you’ll get to experience this unforgettable natural dye process and dye a silk pillowcase\, wool scarf\, and small silk squares. \nFor the first time\, Seelie Studio will also have live urchins in class for you to touch\, hold\, and marvel at these magnificent creatures. You’ll learn about our spikey friends with PhD student and urchin extraordinaires Maddie Armstrong. \nSea Urchins are incredible creatures. However\, due to human impact\, their populations have gone unchecked\, and they have consumed 95% of the kelp forests in California. In efforts to help the kelp and honor these magnificent animals\, we will create beautifully dyed items using urchins from various kelp restoration projects along the West Coast. Join us at the intersection of environmental responsibility and artistic expression. \nWhat’s included: \n✴ Personal dye kit station with ingredients for a half-gallon sea urchin dye bath\n✴ One silk pillowcase with zipper (14”)\n✴ One wool scarf (8×54”)\n✴ Two silk squares\n✴ One urchin shell (also known as a test)\n✴ (optional) You are welcome to bring any silk or wool items from home\, like yarn\, that you wish to dye. If there is enough dye left over\, you’re welcome to use it.\n✴ (optional) Bring a jar to take any leftover dye or sludge home with you to keep experimenting. \nNote: Seelie Studio will have urchin dye kit refills available for purchase! Each refill includes enough acid and urchin spine dust to create a ½ gallon dye bath on your own. DESCRIPTION:Join Pearl Sunrise and the Taos Art School in New Mexico for an immersive week of Navajo Weaving and Culture. Please visit the Taos Art School website for detailed information including lodging\, meals\, and a daily schedule. \nAbout Our Instructor\nPearl Sunrise is a gentle and knowledgeable teacher whose luminous spirit inspires all who meet her. As a 3rd generation Navajo weaver\, she learned her craft from her mother and grandmother. She has been the unofficial Navajo ambassador to the world for years\, receiving a Fulbright to teach in New Zealand\, and a commission by the U.S. State department to visit Lesotho\, South Africa\, and Toronto\, Canada as a Cultural Specialist. She’s on the advisory board of the New Indian Museum\, in Wash\, D.C.\, and is currently a professor at the School of American Indian Arts\, in Santa Fe. Her work is collected worldwide. \nYour Class Experience\nThis class is as much about Culture as it is about Weaving. Pearl Sunrise is a luminous person whose gentle presence will encourage you while her extensive knowledge of these techniques helps your hands to know what to do. \nEach morning starts with a Drumming ceremony & Stories. In this way we become centered and ready to weave. Pearl is a great Storyteller ! and we will hear about Spider Woman and her gift to the Diné People \nWe’ll meet on Saturday and then class starts on Sunday so we have a full day to focus on the all important warping. Monday morning we start weaving. Pearl demonstrates a technique which the students then try on their own under her encouraging supervision. This hands-on workshop will led by material designer\, technologist\, and researcher Olivia Cueva at the Fibershed Learning Center. \nStep into our hands-on Intro to Bio-Textiles workshop and learn to transform everyday biopolymers—like gelatin and algae—into regenerative textiles. Over the course of this immersive\, in-person session\, you’ll explore the principles\, tools\, and techniques behind bioplastic textiles\, design and cast your own eco-friendly samples\, and leave with a one-of-a-kind creation made from the materials you’ve developed. \nEvery ingredient we use is people-safe\, planet-safe\, and fully biodegradable\, giving you a solid foundation for experimenting with any biodegradable material in the future. Artist Ink: A Hands-On Workshop • Saturday\, Sep. 6 10am-4pm \n\nᝰ Explore the vibrant art of ink-making using foraged and cultivated plants\, as well as repurposed dye vats.\nThis immersive\, hands-on class is ideal for artists of all backgrounds—whether you work in drawing\, painting\, fiber arts\, or installation. You’ll learn how to craft saturated\, long-lasting inks and build your own palette from seasonal local plants\, a primary color palette and a few unexpected hues.\nThe course includes plenty of time for creative experimentation and guided instruction. Lake and Mineral Pigments • Sunday\, Sep. 7 10am-4pm \n\nᝰ What is a lake pigment? How do mineral pigments differ? Dive into this hands-on exploration of pigment-making techniques\, from earth and lake-based sources to finished watercolor pans. This workshop is perfect for artists working in painting\, printmaking\, textiles\, installation\, or anyone curious about handmade color. Together\, we’ll follow the full paint-making process—from selecting raw materials to grinding them into artist-quality pigments. You’ll learn the distinct characteristics of mineral and lake pigments\, and how to incorporate them into your creative practice.\nEach participant will make their own pan watercolors and take home a set of handmade samples. Fall is the  perfect time for fiber artists to think about their winter projects.   The Natural Fiber Fair inspires us with new skills and beautiful fibers. \nEducation  is an important aspect of the Natural Fiber Fair.  Every hour there are  several demos and workshops to choose from.  Learn about basket  weaving\, natural dyeing\, spinning\, knitting\, felting and more! You’ll learn about our spikey friends with PhD student and urchin extraordinaire Maddie Armstrong. \nSea Urchins are incredible creatures. However\, due to human impact\, their populations have gone unchecked\, and they have consumed 95% of the kelp forests in California. In efforts to help the kelp and honor these animals\, we will create a beautifully dyed beanie using urchins from various kelp restoration projects along the West Coast. Join us at the intersection of environmental responsibility and artistic expression. \nWhat’s included:\n✴ Personal dye station with ingredients for a one-gallon sea urchin dye bath\n✴ One wool beanie (Fibershed Climate Beneficial™ Verified premium Merino wool sourced locally from California)\n✴ One urchin shell (also known as a test)\n✴ (optional) Bring a jar to take any leftover dye or sludge home with you to keep experimenting.
