SUMMARY:Making a Traditional Japanese Vat with Buaisou
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the process of how to make and maintain an indigo vat/dye\, using a traditional technique of fermenting Sukumo (composted indigo) in ash lye\, calcium hydroxide\, and wheat bran with BUAISOU staff from Tokushima\, Japan. Fermentation takes eleven days in Sonoma before the indigo dye workshops start. Full schedule of BUAISOU workshops here: https://www.sonomaculturalexchange.org/new-events \nIn addition to making indigo vats with sukumo from Japan\, there will also be vats made from locally farmed and fermented indigo by Fibershed producers Mary Pettis-Sarley of Twirl Yarn and Craig Wilkinson of Craig’s Indigo. Mary has grown and composted locally grown indigo since 2013 and learned many of her techniques from Buaisou. Craig also has grown Japanese indigo in Sonoma County since 2014. He composts the indigo using similar methods as Buaisou and helps maintain community indigo dye vats in Sonoma County. \nTo register for this class\, please sign up at the Sonoma Community Center website or please call Eric Jackson at (707) 938-4626 x1.

SUMMARY:Spelt Weaving: An Ancient Tradition
DESCRIPTION:The ancient practice of weaving stalks of grain into intricate patterns comes from a time when people’s survival depended on the grain harvest. These designs vary from country to country\, but a similar belief in the fertility of the earth underlies them all. \nWoven from the last sheaf or best cut of the harvest\, straw work/corn dollies was a decorative way to store a bundle of seed over the winter so that the Spirit of the Grain could survive and be plowed back into the soil in the Springtime. Harvest customs such as straw plaiting were thought to bring blessing and prosperity to the community and its land. \nLearn about the history of wheat weaving and how to create your own “Welsh Fan” design out of spelt stalks harvested by the Mendocino Grain Project on Ridgewood Ranch. \nSpace is limited\, pre-register early to save your spot. \nAbout the Instructor: Anna Hope has lived in giant redwood trees\, planted fruit trees with children at their schools all over California\, converted diesel buses to run on vegetable oil\, made herbal medicine\, built natural homes\, and organized zero waste at events. She is versed in both permaculture principles and diversity awareness. She strongly appreciates the wisdom of many tribal cultures but has chosen to delve into her Celtic tribal roots instead of appropriating other cultures\, at the same time seeking justice for all. \nShe will be teaching this class with her mother\, Laura West.

DESCRIPTION:The California Wool and Fiber Festival (CWFF) hosts one of the country’s oldest and largest wool shows\, the California National Wool Show\, held every year since 1926!  The California National Wool Show draws hundreds of fleeces from all over California and the nation for competitive judging\, culminating in our annual fleece sale! You are invited to observe the competition as the judge evaluates each entry and awards prizes in each class. There is a lot to be learned in listening to a knowledgeable judge comment on the condition\, character\, properties\, and uses of various fibers.\n\nThe Festival also features wonderful\, creative\, vendors; a used equipment booth; sheep shearing demonstrations by Matt Gilbert; Angora rabbit fiber gathering demonstration by Charlie Lacey; and a delightful fiber arts show! Get involved\, bring your spinning wheel or spindle and join us in the spinning circle every day or in the spinning competition on Sunday.\n\nThe California Wool and Fiber Festival (CWFF) takes place in conjunction with the Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show in the picturesque Anderson Valley of Northern California. Visitors can enjoy various fair activities including livestock competitions\, crafts\, country living arts\, and machinery as well as live music\, rides\, and various food booths!  Also on the festival grounds\, we are proud to have the Sheep Dog Trials that showcase some of the best herding dogs in the area. Settle into the covered stadium seating and spend some time admiring the amazing talents of these dogs and their handlers.
