Services she offers include sheep shearing and contract grazing. \nAlison Smith: Alison is the shepherd of the flock of over 200 sheep at the UC Hopland Research and Extension Center\, she also supports research and extension at the site. \nTrevor Hollenback: Owner/operator of Hollenback Shearing\, Trevor Hollenback has been professionally trained and employed as a shearer in the United States\, New Zealand\, Australia\, and Austria. His primary focus in shearing is limiting stress to both the sheep and shearer. \nRebecca Burgess: Rebecca Burgess is the executive director of Fibershed\, chair of the board for Carbon Cycle Institute\, and the author of “Harvesting Color.” A vocationally trained weaver and natural dyer\, she creates hands-on curricula that focus on restoration ecology and fiber systems. Burgess has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans in the Northern California Fibershed to pilot an innovative fiber systems model at the community scale.

SUMMARY:Natural Dye Virtual Demo + Navajo Nation Mask Drive
DESCRIPTION:Learn how plants in your garden and pantry can provide color for your cloth mask\, and help us send a bulk donation of California Cloth Foundry masks to the Navajo Nation Chinle Chapter. \nFibershed is sponsoring a virtual demonstration of natural dyeing a cotton mask with plants that are also known for their medicinal properties. Natural dyer\, teacher\, and ethnobotanist Deepa Natarajan will lead this 1-hour overview focusing on the process of dyeing a California Cloth Foundry organic cotton mask. She will introduce participants to a wide range of plants that are common to our kitchen and gardens and which can provide a colorful hue and rewarding creative process that is applicable to light-colored cotton fabrics. The virtual demonstration will include live\, moderated Q&A\, and will be recorded so that anyone who registers can access the video replay. \n  \nOur goal is to collectively provide 1000 masks to the Navajo Nation to support public health in a region with one of the highest rates of Coronavirus infection. Thanks to California Cloth Foundry’s cloth mask production using Organic US cotton and California-grown Cleaner Cotton\, and ethical manufacturing in Los Angeles\, we can come together to send a shipment of masks by May 15th. \n  \nFibershed and California Cloth Foundry have joined together to organize the logistics of this mask drive effort\, thanks to outreach by Mai Nguyen of Farmer Mai and the National Young Farmers Coalition\, and Marie Hoff of Full Circle Wool.  \nMai and Marie inspired this donation effort after hearing from colleagues at the First Nations Development Institute that the Navajo Nation is seeking contributions in response to the high per-capita rate of Covid-19. To donate directly to the Official Navajo Nation Covid-19 Relief Fund\, visit: https://www.nndoh.org/donate.html \nCalifornia Cloth Foundry has provided mask donations to impacted communities through the “Buy One Gift One” program beginning in late March. California Cloth Foundry is a member of the Northern California Fibershed Producer Program and creator of a soil-to-skin\, US grown and made supply chain. As the Los Angeles area began shutting down to reduce the spread of the novel Coronavirus\, California Cloth Foundry engaged and transformed their existing supply network to produce masks “to serve our community and maximize our social\, economical and environmental impact — with our regenerative cloth masks made from compostable plant based ingredients without harmful chemicals” said founder Lydia Wendt. Hearing of this effort\, Solminer Wine Co.\, an Organic and Biodynamic wine producer in the Santa Ynez Valley of California\, reached out to support a bulk donation of California Cloth Foundry masks.  \nJoining together with California Cloth Foundry and Solminer Wine Co.\, Fibershed is sponsoring a virtual demonstration of natural dyeing to generate funds for additional masks\, while providing a creative educational opportunity as part of our ongoing series of virtual demonstrations by Fibershed artisan members.  \nDeepa Natarajan is a member of the Northern California Fibershed community\, co-authored 10 Plants for Color: A Simple Guide to Growing and Using Natural Dye Plants with Helen Krayenhoff\, produced Verdant Color: The Bay Area Natural Dye Journal\, and organizes the annual Fiber & Dye Exhibit at UC Berkeley Botanic Garden. This is a 2 session class that covers brioche in the round\, flat and shaping the brioche using decreasing. SUMMARY:Dyeing with Summer Flowers with Deepa Natarajan
DESCRIPTION:Join natural dyer\, gardener\, and ethnobotanist Deepa Natarajan for a virtual dye demo highlighting summer flowers. Dyeing with flowers can be incredibly rewarding as these little punches of color work their magic quickly on cloth! \nPlant highlights will come from Deepa and co-author Helen Krayenhoff’s book “10 Plants for Color” with a handful of other seasonal surprise plants from Farm Alley Flowers. We’ll cover some history of dyeing\, fiber preparation\, plant selection and go through the process of dyeing up cloth with summer flowers. Deepa is an ethnobotanist and avid gardener. In Deepa’s words: “I believe that gardens can be a source of all things we need\, from foods to medicines\, garments to shelters\, beauty\, and inspiration.”   \n\nThis webinar is part of a series that will be streaming live via Zoom from the Fibershed Learning Center\, \nThe Fibershed Learning Center is a multi-use space to demonstrate and provide hands-on connections to natural fiber and dye systems. The Learning Center will open later this year in Point Reyes Station\, California\, on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Coast Miwok and within the historic Black Mountain Ranch property. \nDuring this time of sheltering in place\, we are pleased to begin offering a series of online classes via Zoom. Proceeds from each event support the class instructor and contribute to Fibershed for educational programming. A portion of the proceeds from each virtual event will also be shared with a local and mission-aligned non-profit organization\, selected by the instructor. SUMMARY:Growing & Processing Flax with Sandy Fisher
DESCRIPTION:Join Sandy Fisher of Chico Flax for an online presentation about growing and processing flax to make linen. Sandy will first show images of this year’s crop—growing\, harvesting\, retting in the field and in the tanks\, and drying on the lines before processing. Sandy will then do a hands-on demo of all three steps of flax processing: 1) The manual Brake and how/why the tool is used with the flax bundle. 2) The Scutching board and paddle and how/why it is used. 3) The three combs called Hackles that separates the short tow from the long lin\, and an explanation of tow and long lin. \nParticipants will be invited to submit questions. \nRegister on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VGX1ek-HSiKRVW_E1lDioA \nA video of the webinar will be made available to webinar registrants within approximately one week of the event. \n\nSandy has been weaving for over 35 years. Her passion for textiles began as a child when she learned to knit. She continued her love of textiles in college\, graduating with a BA degree in Art\, emphasis in Weaving from CSU\, Chico. Over the course of her career Sandy has shared her knowledge through both private and public instruction. In 2012 Sandy was looking for a locally sourced fiber other than wool to make a unique fabric that would be called Chico Cloth. She and other community members started experiments in growing fiber flax in Northern California. In 2016 Chico Flax joined Fibershed’s Producer Program and in 2018 Chico Flax LLC was formed. Chico Flax is piloting regenerative production and processing systems for flax in our region\, bringing a new industry and social enterprise to Northern California in collaboration with local community members\, farmers\, artisans and institutions. By winter of 2020\, marketable yarns blended with wool and cotton will be available. \n\nThis webinar is part of a series that will be streaming live via Zoom from the Fibershed Learning Center\, \nThe Fibershed Learning Center is a multi-use space to demonstrate and provide hands-on connections to natural fiber and dye systems.
