SUMMARY:Visible Mending on Knitwear and Denim with Arounna Khounnoraj
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a part of Fibershed’s 2022 Mending Challenge Series. (Haven’t signed up for our challenge? Signup here!)\nIn this workshop you will explore Visible Mending with Arounna Khounnoraj of Bookhou. We all have that favorite pair of jeans or a well-loved sweater — no matter how baggy or worn they might become. In the movement against throw-away culture and fast fashion\, learn how to pick up a needle and rediscover the forgotten techniques and the joy of mending. We will cover the technique of weave mending and duplicate stitch\, which is also known as swiss darning. The workshop will also cover patching a garment from the front and back. No previous experience is required. \nWhen: Saturday\, October 15\, 11a PDT/ 2p ET \nLength: 2 hours \nWhere: Zoom \nCost: Sliding Scale\, recommended offering of $45-95 \nMax. Number of Participants: 50-75 \nREGISTER HERE! \nThis class\, and the activity of mending in general\, encourages us to use what we have around the house and in our stashes already. With that in mind\, here is a list of useful items that would be good to have on hand to follow Arounna’s demonstrations and try some mending techniques during the class. \nItems needed: \n– A darning needle suitable to the size of yarn or thread you are using \n– A sharp needle about 2 inches long for doing sashiko stitch \n– Mending yarn (should be no bigger than worsted weight. Using leftovers and remnants is strongly encouraged! DMC tapestry wool is also a good option\, as it is sold in small skeins in a variety of colors) \n– Sashiko thread (in either indigo or white\, or embroidery cotton floss will work fine too) \n– Scissors and a surface to mend on like a darning mushroom but items found in your home such as a light bulb\, tennis ball\, or wood ladle would work \n– Scrap fabric for patches \n– Items to mend (like a sweater\, cotton shirt\, denim/cotton pants) \nMore About Arounna Khounnoraj:\nArounna Khounnoraj is a Canadian artist and maker working in Toronto where she immigrated with her family from Laos at the age of four. While her education includes a master’s degree in fine arts in sculpture and ceramics\, it was through subsequent residencies that she found her current focus in fibre arts. In 2002 she started bookhou\, a multi-disciplinary studio with her husband John Booth\, where Arounna explores screen printing and a variety of textile techniques such as embroidery and punch needle. She creates objects such as bags\, home goods and textile art. In 2020 she released her second book on Visible Mending and in June 2022 she will be releasing her third book on Embroidery. \nREGISTER HERE!

Hmmm… well\, self-care is hot on the tongues of those who know best. I happen to know that incremental decision-making processes have a calming effect and then the language of stitching can come with the labels like relaxing and meditative. I include words like repetitive\, unifying\, balancing\, rhythmic. Well guess what? These words are also part of our universal design and art-language. I am crazy about how they speak to each other in my own slow-stitching practice. I believe there is a convergence here worth exploring together. \nWith this monthly gathering\, our work is not outcome-based. We will however use the elements and principles of design as meditation and design jumping-off points. Line\, Shape\, Color\, Form\, Space\, Texture\, Balance\, Rhythm\, Repetition\, Harmony\, Contrast\, and Unity. These are powerful words in design and in daily living. I believe we run the risk of going in to our weekend feeling refreshed and centered. I will encourage you to continue the process at home as well. \nYou will be provided with everything you need including a curated bundle of materials to work with which supports the element and/or principle of design for that evening. We will be working together but independently in the slowfiber classroom. Needles and threads are also provided. Simply bring yourself and perhaps a snack to share. I will have bottomless tea available. This is a non-judgmental and supportive environment and practice. I recommend you be able to stitch and thread a needle well. That is all. If you participate in all eight monthly offerings the finished outcome is enough to build a prayer flag-I am happy to do that with you as a reminder of your self care practice. \nThere is no refund for these events if you need to cancel. DESCRIPTION:Learn to make dyes from local plants & print with them on fabrics \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station for a two-day workshop with textile artist\, anthropologist\, and storyteller Karen Hampton. The workshop runs from 10 am to 4 pm each day. \nIn Karen’s words: “As a natural dyer and printmaker\, I am interested in sharing printmaking techniques with natural dyes. In this workshop\, we will make dyes from plants local to the San Francisco Bay Area and found within the beautiful natural landscape of West Marin County. \n“A long time ago\, I apprenticed with Master Dyer Ida Grae and worked in her dye garden\, learning many of the secrets of the plants found in Marin. We will also discuss what you are growing in your garden and which dyes plants are light and colorfast. I will address the ethical issues of harvesting plant material from the wild vs. using extracts. \n“We will use natural dyes to create surfaces on cloth and then print with thickened dyes. As their medium I provide a vehicle for my ancestor’s spirits to transcend history and remain as historical memory. SUMMARY:English Willow Basket Weaving Demonstration with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:A demonstration of weaving a large traditional English willow basket from start to finish \nCharlie will make a traditional large English willow basket from start to finish\, while pointing out the various techniques involved. At hand will be a selection of baskets exhibiting a variety of European willow techniques. \nThis demonstration doubles as a preparation for those who are interested in an upcoming two-day Willow Basket workshop at Fibershed Learning Center (December 3 & 4)\, so that attendees can gauge whether they are ready for the challenge of making a large willow basket. \nThe demonstration is limited to 18 attendees\, and will take place at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA. (Address provided upon registration.) Weather permitting\, we will be sitting outdoors in a shaded area. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the Bay Model in Sausalito\, Lake County Museum\, and another is in the collection of the Oakland Museum. SUMMARY:Natural Palettes of Fall Color in West Marin with Sasha Duerr
DESCRIPTION:Join Sasha Duerr onsite at the Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch in Point Reyes Station for a day of exploring fall color and the natural palettes of seasonal color in Northern California. We will gather a variety of onsite ingredients\, then make and use natural dye baths with those ingredients and others. \nTogether we will create a local fall dye palette from a curated selection of gathered ingredients\, including weeds and food and flora waste. Explore the nuances and beauty of color terroir\, and create an array of take-home\, naturally dyed textiles\, saturated in the seasonal tones of West Marin. \nStudents should bring: lunch\, snacks\, and beverages (water bottle/travel mug). Sasha centers her practice and research on the collaborative color potential of weeds\, food and floral waste\, and local and seasonal ingredients. Teaching for over a decade at California College of Arts with a joint appointment in Textiles and Fine Arts\, Sasha lectures\, consults\, and widely designs curriculum and courses in the intersection of natural color\, slow food\, slow fashion\, and social practice. In 2007\, Sasha founded Permacouture Institute to encourage the exploration of regenerative design practices for fashion and textiles. DESCRIPTION:Learn to weave a large traditional English willow basket in this 2-day workshop \nIn this hands-on workshop\, each participant will weave a large\, peeled willow\, flaring basket\, using willow that Charlie grows near Muir Beach. Work will be quite strenuous\, and participants should be comfortable sitting at floor level. \nPrerequisite: Enrollees must have attended Charlie’s willow basketry demonstration on November 5th\, or have had previous experience with willow. \nThe workshop is limited to 8 students\, and will take place at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA. (Address provided upon registration.) Weather permitting\, we will be sitting outdoors in a shaded area. In the event of rain\, we will be in the garage studio/classroom\, which has plenty of ventilation. DESCRIPTION:Making your own rugs is a beautiful way to add color and texture to your home\, as well as to minimize textile waste. SUMMARY:Monthly Fibershed Mending Bar Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Breathe new life into your favorite textiles with local mending experts\, Heidi & Allison!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIf a new garment is kept for nine months longer than the typical use cycle\, it reduces the garment’s carbon footprint by 30% (The Waste and Resources Action Programme 2015). In a world enveloped by fast fashion and linear textile streams\, we encourage you to think about the longevity of your clothes and other textiles. How are you taking care of your garments/ textiles? How can you prolong the life of your second skin? \nMending is a wonderful way to transform your favorite moth-damaged\, torn\, or distressed garments\, homewares\, and other textiles. In these mending bar happy hours\, you will learn how to visibly mend with cotton thread and patching\, along with woven mending\, developing your own stitch patterns. You will be fusing fabrics together with stitch\, so they become a new cloth! You have the option of practicing boro\, sashiko\, darning\, & quilting techniques on a sampler first\, or you can jump right in and start on the item you brought to repair. \nEach student will receive an individual consultation on how best to mend one garment considering fabric\, fiber\, thread\, color\, lines\, techniques\, and more. Students will leave the workshop with a stitching sampler (optional)\, mended garment (in-progress)\, and a basic understanding of mending. Basic sewing and stitching skills are required. \nIf you don’t have a garment to mend but want to explore visible mending to create an abstract art piece\, you are also welcome to join! We often make practice samplers to explore different shapes and color stories that then get turned into pillows or wall hangings. \nMaterials provided: \n\nFabric for creating a mending sampler\nEmbroidery & pearl cotton thread\nExtra fabric for patches\nYarn for mending/darning knitted garments and textiles\nNeedles of varying types and sizes. Although we request that you arrive close to your timeslot\, feel free to stay longer to work on your mending project. \nBring… \nA Mending Project \n\nPlease bring your own woven fabric garment or textile for mending. Garments made out of cotton\, linens\, & lighter-weight types of denim are good starter projects. Do not bring heavy denim\, canvas\, silk\, gauze\, t-shirts or leggings\, anything out of jersey fabric for your first project. We will talk about why these things are harder to mend and best practices for mending them.\nPatching fabric: Patching fabric should match the weight and fiber of the garment being mended. Don’t worry if you don’t have fabric\, there will be fabric available in class too. If fixing a pair of jeans with stretch\, using t-shirt fabric works well or other denim with stretch. Using cloth that has already softened and settled through wear and washing\, for instance\, pillowcases\, tea towels\, well-worn shirts\, as well as some fresh new shirting fabrics make great patches.\n1-3 skeins if using different colors (half skeins are fine) of embroidery\, sashiko\, or pearl cotton thread. Thread and yarn available for use.\nEmbroidery hoop that is a suitable size to fit the project. When picking out an embroidery hoop you want a minimum of 2” of room beyond the area being mended. Embroidery hoops will also be available to use.\nSashiko or embroidery needles. Sashiko needles will be available for purchase if you don’t have them already. Thread will also be available to use. AND/ OR\n\nA Darning Project (Woven mending) \n\nPlease bring your own woven fabric garment or textile for mending.\nYarn to use for mending. Yarn will be available for use.\nDarning egg or mushroom\, speed loom\, or tennis ball\, a rubber band or hair tie.\nDuplicate stitch/knitted mending: Bring double-pointed or regular needles in the appropriate size as well as a size or two smaller for picking up stitches and a darning needle. Circular needles in a 16” or 24” also work but aren’t ideal. Darning needles will also be available to use.\n\nRequirements: \n\nItems to be laundered first (please make sure garments are clean and mostly wrinkle-free!)\nWoolen items with moth holes must be sealed in a bag\, frozen for 48 hours to kill any potential larvae\n\nCovid-19 Protocol: Please note that each Fibershed workshop may have different covid-19 protocols based on the teacher’s requests. \nDue to the continued uncertainty and unpredictability of Covid\, and in order to keep everyone safe\, we require all participants to wear masks (double-layer fabric mask or a proper n-95) and practice 6’ social distancing. We are also offering a limited number of spots available per mending session. Although our main mending area is indoors\, we also have a deck and various outdoor workspaces that can be utilized as weather permits. Proof of full vaccination plus booster is required (for our February sessions\, rapid tests will be available for non-boosted individuals). You will learn how to transform your favorite moth-damaged\, torn\, or distressed garments\, homewares\, and other textiles by visibly mending and patching\, and developing your own stitch patterns! Whether you’re new to repairing your clothes or an avid mender\, we invite you to join us. The Mending Bar will be open throughout the event\, and you can hop in at any time. \nWe will also be hosting Furoshiki workshops with Sachiko Knappman\, to learn the art of Japanese fabric wrapping – for gifts and everyday carry.
