SUMMARY:Sandal Making with Stace Fulwiler
DESCRIPTION:(Tuition includes all materials) \nHandcrafting leather sandals is a traditional way of shoemaking that has been practiced for centuries all around the world. This particular kind of slow fashion used to be abundant in the Bay Area but has since become more difficult to find. Come learn how to do this special craft yourself during a day of sandalmaking. Join Stace Fulwiler at Black Rock Ranch to learn how to make a pair of leather sandals that are custom fit to your feet. No experience is necessary\, Stace will provide all the tools & supplies. \nSee photos of past workshops & student-made sandals HERE \nIn this workshop you will learn to make your own custom pair of sandals made from sturdy leather soles\, half-inch stacked leather heels and supple leather straps and insoles. Together we will explore the sandal-making process\, from cutting the straps to fitting them to your own feet. Over the course of making your sandals\, you will also learn the basics of leather crafting and you will become familiar with the essential tools and supplies of shoemaking. \nYou will choose from a handful of different sandal design that are simple and easy for beginners to master. I’ll bring four different leather colors for you to choose from: black\, espresso\, caramel\, and natural vegetable tanned leather. \nAt the end of the day we will sand down the edges of your sandals\, refining the fit and finish of your sandals. You will be able to walk away from the workshop wearing your new custom\, self-made sandals! \nFor more information\, and to enroll: https://www.blackrockranch.com/product/sandal-making-with-stace-fulwiler/ \nAbout the instructor: Based in LA\, Stace Fulwiler creates sandals inspired by Mediterranean sandal ateliers\, beatnik sandal-wearers of yesteryear\, and California culture. Stace began making sandals in 2013 and immediately realized that working with her hands was essential to her emotional health and vitality. She fell in love with the sandal making process; working with the body\, leather\, patterns and tools to create something sublime\, personal\, and evolving. Stace began teaching sandal making workshops to demystify the process of making one’s own footwear\, and to enable others to reclaim the joy of using their own two hands (and two feet) to finish a project in one day. Sandal making is a very learnable craft and Stace absolutely loves teaching it: anyone can experience the magic of shoemaking with the necessary tools\, supplies and a little guidance.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Fundamentals of Soil Workshop with Dr. Christine Jones - Stemple Creek Ranch
DESCRIPTION:June 18\, Stemple Creek Ranch – Sold out \nWe are offering two different days\, June 18 in Tomales & June 20 in Suisun City for this workshop. The workshop will cover the basics of soil function\, including soil carbon dynamics and the links between carbon\, nitrogen\, phosphorus\, calcium\, trace elements\, soil structure\, and water. By understanding biological mechanisms\, especially the role of plant root exudates and their relationship with the microbial communities involved in soil building\, farmers and ranchers will be empowered to increase plant productivity and drought resilience. There will be an explanation of regenerative cropping\, horticultural and grazing practices and how these can contribute not only to enhanced soil health but also to improved animal and human nutrition and economic bottom lines. \n  \nDr. Christine Jones is an internationally renowned and highly respected groundcover and soils ecologist. She has a wealth of experience working with innovative landholders to implement regenerative land management techniques that enhance biodiversity\, increase biological activity\, sequester carbon\, activate soil nutrient cycles\, restore water balance\, improve productivity and create new topsoil. Christine has organised and participated in workshops\, field days\, seminars and conferences throughout Australia\, New Zealand\, South Africa\, Zimbabwe\, Canada\, Central America\, and the USA and has a strong publication and presentation record. \nChristine received a Community Fellowship Award from Land and Water Australia in 2001. The LWA Community Fellowship Program provides recognition to individuals with an outstanding track record in mobilising and inspiring the community to better manage their land\, water\, and vegetation. \nRead more about Dr. Jones via her short CV here. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nWORKSHOP OUTLINE \nINTRODUCTION – Soils during early European settlement. What has changed – and why? \nNEW KNOWLEDGE – Recent discoveries that have altered the way we think about how soil functions. \nWHAT REALLY FEEDS PLANTS – How soil ecosystems supply plants with nutrients and water. \nHOW THESE ECOSYSTEMS CAN BE COMPROMISED – Why certain farming practices diminish nutrient and water availability to plants and reduce overall farm performance\, especially in a variable climate. \nTHE SOIL/FOOD DISCONNECT – By attempting to bypass soil biological processes and supply nutrients directly to plants via synthetic fertilizers\, we have inadvertently created nutrient deficient foods and disease susceptible crops. \nSOIL OPTIMIZATION – Characteristics of farming practices that maximize soil health\, nutrient availability and water storage. \nHOW IT’S DONE IN PRACTICE – How regenerative land management practices upgrade and improve farming and ranching systems. \nMost farmers and ranchers want to upgrade\, not downgrade\, their capital\, which is their SOIL. \nTHE FUNDAMENTALS OF SOIL will assist in providing a sound knowledge base from which to make informed choices about inputs and practices.
