SUMMARY:Making an English Willow Basket with Charlie Kennard
DESCRIPTION:Learn to weave a large traditional English willow basket in this 2-day workshop \nIn this hands-on workshop\, each participant will weave a large\, peeled willow\, flaring basket\, using willow that Charlie grows near Muir Beach. Work will be quite strenuous\, and participants should be comfortable sitting at floor level. \nPrerequisite: Enrollees must have attended Charlie’s willow basketry demonstration on November 5th\, or have had previous experience with willow. \nThe workshop is limited to 8 students\, and will take place at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA. (Address provided upon registration.) Weather permitting\, we will be sitting outdoors in a shaded area. In the event of rain\, we will be in the garage studio/classroom\, which has plenty of ventilation. We will be working in a cool environment\, so attendees should dress warmly. \nPlease bring: garden clippers\, a pocket knife that can be locked open\, water bowl\, and cushion. Also bring any personal snacks\, lunch and beverages. He has taught for the Point Reyes Field Institute\, East Bay Regional Parks Botanic Garden\, Fibershed\, the Laguna Center and in many schools and at teacher trainings. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the Bay Model in Sausalito\, Lake County Museum\, and another is in the collection of the Oakland Museum. You can also visit a basketry plant garden Charlie has created at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross. Hmmm… well\, self-care is hot on the tongues of those who know best. I happen to know that incremental decision-making processes have a calming effect and then the language of stitching can come with the labels like relaxing and meditative. I include words like repetitive\, unifying\, balancing\, rhythmic. Well guess what? These words are also part of our universal design and art-language. I am crazy about how they speak to each other in my own slow-stitching practice. I believe there is a convergence here worth exploring together. \nWith this monthly gathering\, our work is not outcome-based. We will however use the elements and principles of design as meditation and design jumping-off points. Line\, Shape\, Color\, Form\, Space\, Texture\, Balance\, Rhythm\, Repetition\, Harmony\, Contrast\, and Unity. These are powerful words in design and in daily living. I believe we run the risk of going in to our weekend feeling refreshed and centered. I will encourage you to continue the process at home as well. \nYou will be provided with everything you need including a curated bundle of materials to work with which supports the element and/or principle of design for that evening. We will be working together but independently in the slowfiber classroom. Needles and threads are also provided. Simply bring yourself and perhaps a snack to share. I will have bottomless tea available. This is a non-judgmental and supportive environment and practice. I recommend you be able to stitch and thread a needle well. That is all. If you participate in all eight monthly offerings the finished outcome is enough to build a prayer flag-I am happy to do that with you as a reminder of your self care practice. \nThere is no refund for these events if you need to cancel. I offer an introduction package of a two-hour private class + one Sewing Lab four-week session for $395. There is a library of patterns of simple beginner projects available for free in the classroom. Some sewing supplies are available for purchase at the studio. There is a serger and a cover machine for student perusal as well as a manual snap fastening press. \nAll classes are taught at 64 Louise Street in San Rafael. DESCRIPTION:Making your own rugs is a beautiful way to add color and texture to your home\, as well as to minimize textile waste. SUMMARY:Monthly Fibershed Mending Bar Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Breathe new life into your favorite textiles with local mending experts\, Heidi & Allison!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIf a new garment is kept for nine months longer than the typical use cycle\, it reduces the garment’s carbon footprint by 30% (The Waste and Resources Action Programme 2015). In a world enveloped by fast fashion and linear textile streams\, we encourage you to think about the longevity of your clothes and other textiles. How are you taking care of your garments/ textiles? How can you prolong the life of your second skin? \nMending is a wonderful way to transform your favorite moth-damaged\, torn\, or distressed garments\, homewares\, and other textiles. In these mending bar happy hours\, you will learn how to visibly mend with cotton thread and patching\, along with woven mending\, developing your own stitch patterns. You will be fusing fabrics together with stitch\, so they become a new cloth! You have the option of practicing boro\, sashiko\, darning\, & quilting techniques on a sampler first\, or you can jump right in and start on the item you brought to repair. \nEach student will receive an individual consultation on how best to mend one garment considering fabric\, fiber\, thread\, color\, lines\, techniques\, and more. Students will leave the workshop with a stitching sampler (optional)\, mended garment (in-progress)\, and a basic understanding of mending. Basic sewing and stitching skills are required. \nIf you don’t have a garment to mend but want to explore visible mending to create an abstract art piece\, you are also welcome to join! We often make practice samplers to explore different shapes and color stories that then get turned into pillows or wall hangings. \nMaterials provided: \n\nFabric for creating a mending sampler\nEmbroidery & pearl cotton thread\nExtra fabric for patches\nYarn for mending/darning knitted garments and textiles\nNeedles of varying types and sizes. (Sashiko needles will be provided during class & available for purchase)\nEmbroidery hoops (Only available for use during class)\nOther: Scissors\, chalk pencils\, rulers\, fabric glue sticks\n\nCost: Donation-based \nWhen: Monthly Mending Bar Happy Hours will be held Fourth Thursday of every month\, 4-7p \nTime Slots: We will have rolling arrival times. There will be an hour-long time slot at 4p\, 5p\, and 6p. Although we request that you arrive close to your timeslot\, feel free to stay longer to work on your mending project. \nBring… \nA Mending Project \n\nPlease bring your own woven fabric garment or textile for mending. Garments made out of cotton\, linens\, & lighter-weight types of denim are good starter projects. Do not bring heavy denim\, canvas\, silk\, gauze\, t-shirts or leggings\, anything out of jersey fabric for your first project. We will talk about why these things are harder to mend and best practices for mending them.\nPatching fabric: Patching fabric should match the weight and fiber of the garment being mended. Don’t worry if you don’t have fabric\, there will be fabric available in class too. If fixing a pair of jeans with stretch\, using t-shirt fabric works well or other denim with stretch. Using cloth that has already softened and settled through wear and washing\, for instance\, pillowcases\, tea towels\, well-worn shirts\, as well as some fresh new shirting fabrics make great patches.\n1-3 skeins if using different colors (half skeins are fine) of embroidery\, sashiko\, or pearl cotton thread. Thread and yarn available for use.\nEmbroidery hoop that is a suitable size to fit the project. When picking out an embroidery hoop you want a minimum of 2” of room beyond the area being mended. Embroidery hoops will also be available to use.\nSashiko or embroidery needles. Sashiko needles will be available for purchase if you don’t have them already. Thread will also be available to use. AND/ OR\n\nA Darning Project (Woven mending) \n\nPlease bring your own woven fabric garment or textile for mending.\nYarn to use for mending. Yarn will be available for use.\nDarning egg or mushroom\, speed loom\, or tennis ball\, a rubber band or hair tie.\nDuplicate stitch/knitted mending: Bring double-pointed or regular needles in the appropriate size as well as a size or two smaller for picking up stitches and a darning needle. Circular needles in a 16” or 24” also work but aren’t ideal. Darning needles will also be available to use.\n\nRequirements: \n\nItems to be laundered first (please make sure garments are clean and mostly wrinkle-free!)\nWoolen items with moth holes must be sealed in a bag\, frozen for 48 hours to kill any potential larvae\n\nCovid-19 Protocol: Please note that each Fibershed workshop may have different covid-19 protocols based on the teacher’s requests. \nDue to the continued uncertainty and unpredictability of Covid\, and in order to keep everyone safe\, we require all participants to wear masks (double-layer fabric mask or a proper n-95) and practice 6’ social distancing. We are also offering a limited number of spots available per mending session. Although our main mending area is indoors\, we also have a deck and various outdoor workspaces that can be utilized as weather permits. Proof of full vaccination plus booster is required (for our February sessions\, rapid tests will be available for non-boosted individuals). DESCRIPTION:Fibershed is hosting a Swap – Mend – Furoshiki community event! \nWe’re launching our Clothing Swap Closet\, open to everyone to trade their natural fiber garments and accessories\, and to mix up your closets and keep your textiles circulating amongst our community! All items must be natural fiber materials\, and in clean and good condition. \nOur Mending Bar will also be open with local mending teachers\, Heidi Iverson of Honey Folk Clothing and Allison Reilly. You will learn how to transform your favorite moth-damaged\, torn\, or distressed garments\, homewares\, and other textiles by visibly mending and patching\, and developing your own stitch patterns! Whether you’re new to repairing your clothes or an avid mender\, we invite you to join us. The Mending Bar will be open throughout the event\, and you can hop in at any time. \nWe will also be hosting Furoshiki workshops with Sachiko Knappman\, to learn the art of Japanese fabric wrapping – for gifts and everyday carry. DESCRIPTION:Learn to create a plaited-weave basket like those traditionally made in the Netherlands\, France and Poland \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will learn to make this elegant and unusual plaited-weave basket that is found in the Netherlands\, France and Poland. “Tatza” (properly spelled taca) is a Polish term for breadbasket\, for which use this basket is well-suited. Tule boats made in his workshops can be seen at the Bay Model in Sausalito\, Lake County Museum\, and another is in the collection of the Oakland Museum. The five Saturday sessions\, as well as the invitation to work on your own time\, will offer you the space to complete a 10” x 14’’ woven tapestry. \nThe guiding intention in this process will be to further develop one’s own aesthetic sensibilities\, follow one’s inspiration\, as well as an opportunity to delve into creative practice\, investigation\, and play. \nMaterials will include a generous array of beautiful all-natural fibers and an abundant rainbow of plant-dyed wool. Strongly recommended to be NOT superwash yarns. We love Biches et Buches le Petite Lambswool for this project!\nNeedle Size US 2.5 OR 3 – either a long circular for magic loop\, DPNs or shorties.\nPattern\n\nDETAILS \nMosaic is one of my favorite forms of colorwork! You can create a diversity of incredible patterns with more simplicity than traditional colorwork. These mitts combine a very basic stranded technique for the cuff and then move into the mosaic colorwork for the body of the mitten. \nLearn how to work these 2 styles of colorwork\, in addition to a thumb gusset and decreasing in pattern! Each 1 hour session will focus on a new technique! \nHOMEWORK\nPurchase pattern. Pick your size and cast on the number stitches called for. DESCRIPTION:The long-awaited So Cal Fibershed art show is coming! \nThis exhibition explores how one of humanity’s oldest craft and industrial forms­––the making of clothing––has shaped our relationship to the land\, our bodies\, and each other. \nFor thousands of years\, people have transformed animal- and plant-based fiber to craft garments that clothed and protected their bodies\, offered decoration\, and ultimately engendered a radical and disruptive transformation of the earth\, cultures\, and economies. Many of us recognize fashion as aspirational\, highly profitable\, and innovative\, yet clothing’s humble origins\, necessity\, and profound implications for our wellbeing and that of the earth is under-appreciated\, and often feels mysterious. Join us for an immersive and interactive workshop all about this versatile plant! \nHerbalists\, Erin Masako Wilkins and Hilary Go\, will share its medicinal and cultural significance\, in addition to its myriad of uses in everyday life. SUMMARY:Mushroom Dyes of the Northern California Fungal Fibershed with Alissa Allen
DESCRIPTION:Join mushroom dye expert Alissa Allen for an immersive 3-day course at the Fibershed Learning Center near Point Reyes Station \nThis course offers a rare opportunity to spend three full days exploring mushroom and lichen dyes and focusing on our regional fungal dye palette with Alissa Allen\, a highly experienced educator. We will meet from 9 am to 4 pm each day. Details about location and what to bring will be included in your confirmation email. Maximum class size is 15 students. \nDay 1: Foraging & Testing\nWe will meet at the Fibershed Learning Center for introductions and a course overview\, then go for a walk together and talk about mushroom ecology and habitats\, and observe fungi in nature. After returning to the Learning Center we will discuss the mushrooms we have collected and then test and document the potential dye mushrooms among our collection\, plus make some spore prints. Students will take home test cards and samples from our dye and spore print experiments. \nDay 2: Extracting for Optimal Results\nAlissa will be demonstrating how to dye a regional rainbow from mushrooms and lichens that she has collected\, and how each fungal pigment type works differently with the local water and various modifiers. Students will receive yarn samples plus a recipe card for every color of yarn in our regional rainbow. \nDay 3: Dye Your Own Fiber\nOur final day is focused on dyeing your own fiber (mushroom dyes provided). You’ll want to bring animal (protein) fibers in small 1 oz parcels — clean\, weighed and labeled with at least your initials. Fiber should be unmordanted\, in the form of yarn\, bats\, hankies\, fabric\, or finished pieces. We will dye at least 6 of these 1 oz parcels per person. Bring more or slightly larger pieces too\, as there will likely be ample additional dye available. \nThis day is dedicated to taking a more playful approach\, which Alissa believes is essential to learning. We will work with larger quantities\, observe color variations on different fibers\, mordant in the pot\, and take home enough mushroom-dyed fiber for a project. \nIf you’d like to take home leftover dye\, bring containers with lids. In 1998 she attended her first wild mushroom show\, hosted by Seattle’s Puget Sound Mycological Society and was immediately hooked. She has been a volunteer\, student\, and teacher of mycology ever since. \nIn 2012\, Alissa founded Mycopigments as a program to bring mycology to fiber artists and fiber artists to mycology. Since its inception\, she has led hundreds of students\, in three countries and twenty-five states\, through the steps of exploring and celebrating their regional fungi through the lens of dye research. \nIn 2015\, Alissa created Mushroom and Lichen Dyers United and the Mushroom Dyers Trading Post discussion groups\, as a platform to mentor\, connect\, and facilitate study between her students and folks with less access to her classes. These groups\, along with her prolific workshop offerings\, writings\, and informational dye booths\, have brought together a vibrant community of over 30\,000 members.\nThis year Alissa was honored to host the 19th International Fungi and Fiber Symposium in Port Townsend WA. During this week-long event\, students and teachers from all over the world gathered to share their knowledge. \nThough her teachings are centered around regional fungal dye palettes\, her overall mission is to inspire people to engage more deeply with nature.
