SUMMARY:"Pigmentshed" with Tilke Elkins of Wild Pigment Project
DESCRIPTION:Two Days of Hyperlocal Paint Palettes & Reciprocal Studio Practice \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, for a 2-day workshop with Tilke Elkins. (Please note: this workshop takes place on the Saturday & Sunday of Memorial Day weekend\, and meets from 10 to 4 each day.) \nExplore paint-making through collaboration with the minerals\, plants\, and waste-stream foraged pigments found right here at Fibershed. \nEnroll here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/586290409397 \nPaint-making through deep relationship with place nourishes both the painter and the land. By intercepting materials as they travel through their life cycles and exploring opportunities for reciprocity — ways to give back to the land and its communities\, both human and interspecies — artists can align their material practices with values of reverence for place. \nJoin artist and Wild Pigment Project founding director Tilke Elkins for a two-day collaboration with foraged colorants found at Fibershed. Together\, we’ll build a wide-ranging palette using found objects\, exhausted dye baths\, garden waste\, on-site minerals\, and more. We’ll explore a variety of local binders\, including ‘keno’ (eucalyptus sap) and make both chalk and charcoal paints which will allow us to further broaden our palettes. \nWe will touch briefly on lake-making techniques (especially in the case of exhausted dye baths)\, but our focus\, for botanical colorants\, will be alternatives to lake pigments\, including inks and “pinks.” (Lake pigments are a means of fixing a soluble plant colorant\, like a dye\, to an insoluble mineral\, which can then be dried and used as paint. The primary mineral used is commercial alum.) \nWe’ll meet from 10 to 4 both days. Our schedule will evolve in response to the weather\, mood and communications we receive from the land\, and will include: \n\nintroductions & sharing of personal creative practice (bring work if you like!) and cultural/historical/ancestral relationship with land\ndiscussion of local Indigenous ancestral & contemporary pigment practices\nquiet\, non-verbal tuning-in to place\nguidelines for reciprocal foraging practices\nsafety guidelines\ngroup foraging time\npreparing materials (plants\, soils\, found objects) for paint-making\npaint-making with foraged materials\ncharcoal & chalk-making\nwild paint binders\npainting techniques for maximizing palette range\n\nYou’ll take home a holistic\, land-centric\, reciprocal approach to paint-making\, multiple perspectives on how to work with wild pigments as paint\, and a series of small paintings of your own. \nEach participant should bring the following: \n\npersonal snacks\, lunch & beverages (an assortment of teas will be served on site)\na notebook and pen if you like to take notes\n4 mason jars (quart size)\n2 spoons\n2 paint brushes\na pencil\na surface you like to paint on (optional — several options will be available)\na paint-dedicated mortar & pestle — stone or ceramic (about 4 inches diameter)\npalette knife or plastic scraper\n\nAdditional materials that can be purchased in advance\, or borrowed from Fibershed during the workshop: \n\nMuller — There will be a few locally made mullers available to purchase for $50; or Natural Pigments sells a variety of sizes (naturalpigments.com/glass-muller.html). OR\, a less expensive alternative is a glass pickling weight that you have roughened with silicon carbide to grind pigment effectively (naturalpigments.com/silicon-carbide-100-grit-100g.html).\nMulling surface — such as a prepared grinding plate (www.naturalpigments.com/glass-grinding-plate.html). Alternatives are an old glass microwave plate or a piece of tempered glass with smooth edges that you have roughened with silicon carbide to grind pigment effectively (naturalpigments.com/silicon-carbide-100-grit-100g.html).\neye dropper\n\n\nTilke Elkins is an artist\, writer\, and curator based on Kalapuya territory / Oregon\, focused on site-specific/responsive painting and social practice art. Tilke has worked with mineral and botanical pigments since 2007\, and is the founding director of Wild Pigment Project\, a collaborative initiative she established in 2019 to promote ecological balance and regenerative economies through a passion for wild pigments\, their places of origin\, and their cultural histories. \nTilke is a passionate educator who teaches regular courses on foraging and paint-making. She has introduced principles of wild pigment reciprocal practice to diverse creative communities\, including Portland Community College\, the University of Oregon\, WildCraft Studio School\, Lewis and Clark College\, the Pacific Northwest College of Art and to arts educators and their students worldwide through her online comprehensive foraging and art-material-making course\, Being With Pigments. Her most recent work was exhibited at form & concept gallery in Santa Fe along with the Wild Pigment Project Group Exhibition\, which she curated. She was a co-organizer for the inaugural Pigments Revealed International Symposium in 2021\, and was a resident at the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology for the month of February\, 2023. \n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 30 before the event. If you cancel after 30 days before the event\, we are unable to provide refunds unless we can fill your space from the waitlist. If someone who is waitlisted purchases your space\, we will refund your ticket\, minus the Eventbrite fees. Otherwise there will be no refunds. You are also welcome to transfer your ticket to someone who wishes to purchase it directly from you. \n\nTuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends\nFibershed is offering two scholarships to most workshops; one scholarship if it’s a small class. In addition to scholarships for tuition\, we are offering a limited number of stipends for transportation and/or childcare. If you would not otherwise be able to attend\, and would like to be considered as a scholarship and/or stipend recipient\, please answer a few brief questions on this Google Form. Responses will be reviewed by Learning Center staff and kept strictly confidential. \n\nBONUS: The Clothing Swap Closet is now open during workshops and events at the Fibershed Learning Center! \nVisit the Clothing Swap Closet when you attend a workshop or event at the Learning Center and exchange your 100% natural fiber garments and accessories. Your clothing contributions must be clean and in good condition. Each contribution entities you to choose one item of comparable value. \nYou may depart up to an hour after the workshop ends\, to allow time to browse and try on items in the closet\, and make your trade!

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Aboubakar Fofana Textiles Trunk Show
DESCRIPTION:We deeply regret that this trunk show has been canceled. We will be following up soon with ways to support Aboubakar’s work.\nBorn in Mali and raised in France\, Aboubakar Fofana is a multidisciplinary artist and designer whose working mediums include calligraphy\, textiles and natural dyes. He is known for his work in reinvigorating and redefining West African indigo dyeing techniques\, and much of his focus is devoted to the preservation and reinterpretation of traditional West African textile and natural dyeing techniques and materials. \nFofana’s work stems from a profound spiritual belief that nature is divine and that through respecting this divinity we can understand the immense and sacred universe. His raw materials come from the natural world\, and his working practice revolves around the cycles of nature\, the themes of birth\, decay and change\, and the impermanence of these materials. He sees the conception and realization of this work as a form of spiritual practice which is shared with his audience. \nFofana is currently deeply involved in creating a farm in conjunction with the local community in the district of Siby\, Mali\, in which the two types of indigenous West African indigo will be the centerpiece for a permaculture model based around local food\, medicine and dye plants. This project hopes to contribute to the rebirth of fermented indigo dyeing in Mali and beyond\, and represents his life’s greatest project to date. \n“For me\, the blue of indigo is symbolic of many things\, many deeply spiritual connections within my homeland. But it is also deeply symbolic of what colonialism has done to my region and my people\, and to lands and societies elsewhere. I can talk about blue as a colour\, as a shade\, as an idea\, as a spiritual practice. I cannot ever separate my work from my spirituality\, and I equally cannot separate it from my political struggle for African liberation\, which is ever-present in all my work.” — Aboubakar Fofana\, from Beyond the Blueness on Tatter \nView a video from Botanical Colors’ Feedback Friday for a tour of Aboubakar’s Bamako studio\, where you will see him harvest indigo\, do some indigo dyeing\, introduce his artisans\, and see all the amazingness that is Aboubakar on his home turf. \nFollow Aboubakar on Instagram @aboubakarfofana \n \nPhoto credits: Top\, garment photos courtesy of Aboubakar Fofana\, additional photos by Francois Goudier and Suki Zoe. SUMMARY:Weaving on a Mayan Backstrap Loom with Sari Monroy Solís
DESCRIPTION:Learn to weave on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home \nThe backstrap loom goes back thousands of years and is one of the oldest known tools in the world. It evolved in several places\, including the Western highlands of Guatemala. Mayan weavers continue to make traditional clothing for everyday use and for the textile market using this traditional loom. \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will learning this ancient skill from Sari Monroy Solís\, whose paternal family comes from the Valle de Panchoy area of Sacatepequez\, Guatemala (now called Antigua and San Antonio Aguas Calientes). To connect to her Kaqchikel community and elders\, Sari weaves using the backstrap loom and teaches this art to others\, especially fellow diaspora. \nThe class will focus on the traditional Mayan backstrap loom. You will learn on a brocade-ready loom that you will take home. The class will begin by learning how the body connects to the loom\, the parts of the loom\, and how to start plain weaving. Once comfortable with plain weaving\, you will learn how to do single-side brocade using common motifs. You will learn the names and origins of these motifs and how to design your own. \nReady to start weaving? We will share a special treat from Guatemala at the end and talk about local fibers that work on these looms\, warping\, and what you can do with your finished piece. \nMaximum 8 students. \nEnroll here (waitlist): eventbrite.com/e/515848666247 \nIncluded: a loom that is warped with cotton yarn\, plus tools and cotton yarn for weaving \nBring: a cushion for more comfortable seating; personal snacks\, lunch and beverages (a selection of teas will be served on site). We are in a rural location\, so most people bring their lunch rather than drive to town. \nSari (Sarah) Monroy Solís lives in diaspora in Northern California. Her father came from the Mayan Kaqchikel community in the Valle de Panchoy area of Sacatepequez\, Guatemala and her mother from the highlands of Veracruz\, Mexico. Traditional weaving\, restoring güipiles\, and Mayan embroidery are some of the ways she maintains her connection to her community of elders in Guatemala. Foraging\, natural dyes\, and plant medicine are some of the ways she honors her maternal Indigenous lineage in Veracruz. She is also an avid mender\, knitter\, and upcycler of fabrics. You can follow her as she continues to make things and explore the natural dye palette: @theblueweaver \n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 30 before the event. If you cancel after 30 days before the event we can only offer a refund (minus Eventbrite fees) if we are able to fill your space from the waitlist. Otherwise there will be no refunds or transfers. SUMMARY:Natural Dyes with Heidi Iverson & Allison Reilly
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will create a dynamic natural color story with 5-7 natural dyes from plants that are easily sourced/foraged from our local landscape. \nAlso included will be cochineal\, a historically significant dye extracted from an insect that lives on Opuntia cacti. Although cochineal is not generally found in our landscape (though it has reportedly been found in Oakland)\, it’s such a bright\, beautiful color that feels so much like summer\, the instructors wanted to include it. \nIn this class\, you will learn: \n\nHow to mordant both protein and cellulose fibers.\nHow to create color from leaves\, bark\, and flowers\nEthical harvesting and processing of different plants\nSeasonal plants and the colors they make\nHow to modify colors to create a wider color palette\nHow to dye with substantive\, tannin-rich plants that don’t require the use of mordants\n\nSpecial note: Some of the dye vats will already be made because they require more than one day to extract color. \nMaterials included: fabric swatches\, thread and yarn — both cellulose and protein fibers \nPlease bring: personal snacks\, lunch and beverages (a selection of teas will be served). Also bring containers to hold any wet fabric or fiber that isn’t dry by the end of the workshop. \nOptional: Bring your own fabric\, thread\, and/or yarn to dye. Fabric pieces should be no larger than 18″ x 18.” You may dye your fabric\, thread\, and/or yarn once everyone has dyed their class materials. You are welcome to bring containers to take home leftover dye\, if available. \nENROLL HERE: eventbrite.com/e/629751452547 \nSPECIAL DISCOUNT: When you enroll in this workshop\, you will receive a $40 discount code that can be applied to the cost of the workshop Mending Techniques with Heidi Iverson & Allison Reilly on July 16th. \n\nHeidi Iverson is the founder of Honey Folk\, her clothing design studio in western Sonoma County\, CA\, where she handcrafts clothing using high quality natural materials. Heidi also devotes time to knitting with local yarns and natural dyeing with plants and flowers that she hand gathers or cultivates. Honey Folk continues to evolve with Heidi\, and refining her aesthetic\, artistic process and philosophy is a continuous journey. She’s founding member of Fibershed\, and its philosophy has been an influence on her aesthetic and her brand ethic. Heidi is always looking to improve her work and offer thoughtful\, beautifully crafted items that will be cherished and worn for many years. \nRead about Heidi on the Fibershed blog: fibershed.org/2022/12/12/slowing-down-with-heidi-iverson-of-honey-folk-clothing \nWebsite: honeyfolkclothing.com \nInstagram: @honeyfolkclothing \n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 7 before the event. SUMMARY:In-Person Mud-Dye Workshop with Virtual Instruction from Aboubakar Fofana
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station for a three-day workshop on Fermented Mineral Mud-Dyeing taught by textile artist Aboubakar Fofana. The virtual instruction runs from 9:00am to 12:00pm each day. Students are invited to stay until 4:00pm to continue working on their pieces. \nThe workshop will focus on traditional Malian mud as the medium and your own creativity as the path to working with this amazing substance. Malian mineral mud dyeing\, or bogolan\, is a deeply cultural and spiritual art practice to create textiles imbued with status\, symbolism\, protection and hidden meaning. The textile is a uniquely West African tradition\, associated with Mali and the Bamana culture. We are fortunate to experience bogolan and mineral mud dyeing with Aboubakar. This is the only workshop to use authentic African materials including fermented mud dye\, indigenous cotton and tannin sources. \nWe will provide traditional tannin-dyed strip fabric for embellishment and fermented mud to create your designs. Each participant will work on small samples and then complete a larger project during the 3-day class. \nThe class will practice on traditional Malian strip cloth (finimugu) and cotton fabric\, using special fermented mud paste that Aboubakar gathered. \nThe workshop includes: \n\n\n\nThree days intensive study on mineral mud-dyeing (in-person) with Aboubakar on Zoom\nAll sampling materials and mud and dyes from Mali including finimugu handwoven cotton fabric and fermented mud paste\, tannin\, and paintbrush.\nAboubakar will present videos and stories of his mud-gathering feats\nPresent at Fibershed will be Sari Monroy who was in Aboubakar’s 2022 Mud-Dyeing class to support the students\n\n\n\nOptional: Participants may bring 1/2 yard of any cotton\, linen\, or hemp fabric for additional projects \nPlease bring: personal snacks\, lunch\, and beverages (a selection of teas will be provided). \n\nIf you are unable to attend in person at Fibershed Learning Center\, Botanical Colors is offering an online-only version of the workshop\, with all workshop materials shipped to you. \nBotanical Colors has also set up a donation page to support Aboubakar’s indigo farm project in Mali. If you’re not able to take his class\, please consider a donation. \n\nThe backstory: Many of us were excited to welcome Aboubakar to the US this summer for a series of in-person workshops from SF Bay Area to Brooklyn with a magical month in Santa Fe to conclude his visit. Sadly\, unforeseen circumstances forced the cancellation of his summer program depriving us of Aboubakar’s wonderful presence. To help Aboubakar recoup some revenue\, we are focusing on his most distinctive workshop\, fermented mineral mud\, and offering it in a hybrid in-person/Zoom format. This is an opportunity to learn a traditional art technique from a gifted instructor — as we gather together at the Fibershed studio. We will provide you with specially prepared Malian finimigu (stripcloth)\, fermented mud paste\, and fabric to create your own designs. \n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) are available up to 7 days before the event. If you cancel after 7 days before the event we can only offer a refund (minus Eventbrite fees) if we are able to fill your space from the waitlist. Otherwise\, there will be no refunds or transfers. Each contribution entitles you to choose one item of comparable value. \nYou may depart up to an hour after the workshop ends\, to allow time to browse and try on items in the closet\, and make your trade!

SUMMARY:Design Your Own Backstrap Loom with Mayan Master Weaver Doña Lidia
DESCRIPTION:A warping workshop for students ready to create their own Mayan backstrap loom \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center\, in Point Reyes\, CA\, and build your own loom in the style of the Mayan brocade backstrap looms\, from start to finish. \nDoña Lidia de Lopez’s brocade looms are a work of art\, handmade in the ancestral style of her hometown of San Antonio Aguas Calientes\, Sacatepequez\, Guatemala. Assembled using a combination of bold\, colorful cotton and multiple heddles\, the loom is prepared for single and double-sided brocade\, the latter a unique style particular to her hometown. \nThrough her delicate and vibrant weaving\, Doña Lidia holds and uplifts her heritage\, creating pieces that combine story\, environment\, ancestral geometry\, and fiber art. Teaching her textile art\, she feels\, is a spiritual calling to keep her tradition alive. \nDoña Lidia’s güipiles\, belts\, and other textiles are currently exhibited at the 2023 International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. Previously\, her art has been in exhibitions around the world including: Germany\, Canada\, France\, Italy\, Mexico\, Japan\, and the United States. She has taught weaving throughout the States at several universities. She is currently a recipient of a 2023 Weave a Real Peace grant. \nDoña Lidia lives in San Antonio Aguas Calientes\, Guatemala\, with her family\, and has a vendor space at El Mercadito Artesanias adjacent to the plaza in Antigua\, Guatemala. We are excited to welcome her as she visits and shares her traditional craft. \n\nOutline of the Workshop: \nIn this class\, participants will design and assemble their own loom by exploring a palette of colors and making their own customized cotton warp that will be ready to weave into a belt. Participants will attach the warp to end rods and shed rods\, setup the heddles\, roll a bobbin\, and lay out their first rows on their brocade loom to secure the loom. All pieces for the loom are included in a material packet for each student including: rods\, shed rods\, batten\, tenter\, backstrap\, tie-rope\, bobbin\, brocade pick\, and colorful fibers. Participants will leave the class knowing how to prepare and assemble their own Mayan backstrap loom for future weaving projects. \nDoña Lidia will be assisted in this workshop by two weavers\, Sari Monroy Solis and her son Nathaniel. The day after\, August 6\, Doña Lidia will be a guest assistant in Sari and Nathaniel’s beginning backstrap weaving class at Fibershed. \nNote: It is recommended that participants in the August 5 “Design Your Own Backstrap Loom” sign up for a backstrap weaving class at Fibershed on either August 6 or September 23 (or were enrolled in June) since this workshop will be focused on the design and assembly of the loom. \nEnroll Here: eventbrite.com/e/670474175307 \n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 7 days before the event.
\nEnroll here: eventbrite.com/e/548210240587 \nIncluded: a loom that is warped with cotton yarn\, plus tools and cotton yarn for weaving \nBring: a cushion for more comfortable seating; personal snacks\, lunch and beverages (a selection of teas will be served on site).
