SUMMARY:Japanese Indigo\, Seed to Seed\, with Craig Wilkinson
DESCRIPTION:Join Craig Wilkinson of Craig’s Indigo for this virtual event. He will share his experience growing indigo over the last seven years in Northern California\, including his current crop at the Santa Rosa Junior College Shone Farm located in Forestville\, California. \nCraig will give a general comparison of indigo vats made from composted indigo and indigo pigment made from a water extraction method\, and he will demonstrate how to make a fructose vat with composted indigo. He will also be dyeing fibers from several Fibershed producers. \nParticipants will be invited to submit questions. \nRegister on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0aqAt1JRRRmPjNsIfDeXJQ \nA video of the webinar will be made available to webinar registrants within approximately two weeks of the event. \n\nGrowing Japanese Indigo on multiple farms in Sonoma County over the last seven years\, Craig Wilkinson processes indigo leaves using composting & pigment extraction methods. Craig sells indigo seeds and seedlings on the Fibershed Marketplace and has created and maintained multiple community indigo dye vats at the Fiber Circle Studio located in Cotati\, California. \n\nThis webinar is part of a series that will be streaming live via Zoom from the Fibershed Learning Center\, \nThe Fibershed Learning Center is a multi-use space to demonstrate and provide hands-on connections to natural fiber and dye systems. The Learning Center will open later this year in Point Reyes Station\, California\, on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Coast Miwok and within the historic Black Mountain Ranch property. \nDuring this time of sheltering in place\, we are pleased to begin offering a series of online classes via Zoom. Proceeds from each event support the class instructor and contribute to Fibershed for educational programming. A portion of the proceeds from each virtual event will also be shared with a local and mission-aligned non-profit organization\, selected by the instructor. Currently scheduled online events are listed on our Learning Center page.

SUMMARY:In Conversation: The Fibershed Movement
DESCRIPTION:What Does Fashion Have to Do With Farming? Exploring the Growing Fibershed Movement in the UK \n  \nSimilar to a local watershed or a foodshed\, a Fibershed is focused on the source of the raw material\, the transparency with which it is converted into clothing\, and the connectivity among all parts\, from soil to skin and back to soil. \n  \nFibershed is an international movement developing regional and regenerative fibre systems\, where farmers\, producers\, textile workers\, designers\, distributors and many others work together to responsibly manage the full lifecycle of a garment. \n  \nJoin a panel discussion with Fibershed founding director Rebecca Burgess to discuss how the movement started in the USA and has subsequently grown around the world. We’ll hear from those building the Fibershed movement within the UK\, including Emma Hague\, who is founding director of the Bristol Textile Quarter and started the South West England Fibreshed group. We’ll also hear from farmer Gala Bailey-Barker of Plow Hatch Farm and natural dyer Deborah Barker who founded the South East England Fibreshed group. Abby Rose\, of Farmerama Radio\, will be leading the conversation\, and we’ll have time to delve into questions from the audience at the end!

SUMMARY:Sonoma County Environmental Stewardship Panel: Education\, Predators & Balanced Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:This panel was formed to create an open\, amicable\, and educational discussion regarding wildlife management\, land conversion\, local policy & livestock predation\, specifically addressing how these issues affect our local food supply & grazing for fire fuel load reduction. \nThis is a grassroots effort to gather information\, experience\, and knowledge in a manner that honors and respects all voices. To bring together all parties of an emotionally heightened\, culturally fractioning topic in order to provide education\, while reducing the animosity between sides. We are attempting to create a methodology and template in which we can experience and consider a viewpoint that is different from our own while realizing that we can agree with aspects of both sides of the argument. We (the general public\, farmers\, researchers\, and governmental entities) are all connected and will never move forward in the discussion of these topics without flexibility\, respect\, and empathy. \nMoving forward\, we hope to develop two more panels to step this grassroots effort into creating more well-rounded policy & to provide management systems that support all different parties involved. \nClick here to register via Zoom

SUMMARY:Keeping Fashion Close to Home for Better and Lighter Living
DESCRIPTION:Objective: To highlight community solutions for reversing unsustainable trends in fashion and textiles\n\nDescription: Our wardrobes and textiles protect us from the elements and enable expressions of culture and individuality. Responsibility for closing the fashion loop lies not only with consumers\, who are affected by price\, trends\, advertising\, and available options but also with communities and companies who design\, produce\, and market products and set the policy infrastructure. The fashion industry sector and textiles stand out because people identify so intimately with purchasing decisions about what they wear. We’re seeing sustainable fashion trending in the media as consumer concern rises over the negative impacts of this industry on the environment. Better sourcing and production efforts\, consumer messaging (uniqueness and quality over quantity)\, reuse and vintage models\, and more product information are all emerging solutions. This webinar will showcase local and regional fiber and textile systems that drive environmentally and socially healthy production chains and businesses\, support local job creation\, and rebuild markets for regionally produced fashion and fiber-based products.\n  \n  \n\nPresenters: \n\n\n\n\nKatia Vladimirova\, Founder\, Sustainable Fashion Consumption Working Group \n\n\n\nKirstin Miller\, Ecocity Builders \nWinona LaDuke\, Honor the Earth & Winona’s Hemp \nRebecca Burgess\, Fibershed \nHarry Moser\, Founder\, Reshoring Initiative

SUMMARY:Climate Beneficial Agriculture as foundation for textile creation processes
DESCRIPTION:The role of Climate Beneficial Agriculture as a foundation for textile creation processes \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event \n\n\nAdriana Marina (founder of the NGO Hecho por Nosotros and B-Corp animaná) is happy to host Rebecca Burgess. \nCommunities around the world often rely upon exploitative textile systems. Fibershed develops place-based regional fiber and natural dye systems that generate necessary forms of material culture\, while simultaneously regenerating lost carbon stocks in our soil and providing meaningful livelihoods. \nFibershed founder and Executive Director Rebecca Burgess has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans within the Northern California fibershed and is piloting a regenerative fiber systems model at a community scale. \nAbout our guest speaker Rebecca Burgess: \nRebecca Burgess is the Executive Director of Fibershed and Chair of the Board for Carbon Cycle Institute. She has over a decade of experience writing and implementing hands-on curriculum that focuses on the intersection of restoration ecology and fiber systems. She has taught at Westminster College\, Harvard University\, and has created workshops for a range of NGOs and corporations. She is the author of the best-selling book Harvesting Color\, a bioregional look into the natural dye traditions of North America. She has built an extensive network of farmers and artisans within their region’s Northern California Fibershed to pilot the regenerative fiber systems model at the community scale.
