SUMMARY:2020 Fibershed Wool & Fine Fiber Symposium: Healthy Soil and Sea
DESCRIPTION:The 9th annual Fibershed Symposium will focus on how natural fiber and dye systems can positively impact soil and sea. Join us this November 12 – 14: \n[Registration coming soon] \nFrom the landscape to the seascape\, the largest active carbon pools on planet earth are where we humans work\, and where the impacts of our lives are made evident. When textiles are drawn from fossil carbon reserves and spun into plastic clothing\, we see ripple effects from climate destabilization to microplastic pollution. Extractive industries undermine our value systems – from the pressures of overproduction on garment workers to the excesses of disposable clothing. \nIn land-based fiber and dye systems\, we see living examples that restore soil health and change the course of fashion and agriculture’s impact on waterways. Reconnecting to bioregional and cultural models of production\, we can contribute to our oceans’ health and well-being\, our soils\, our manufacturing sector\, and our fiber and dye sovereignty. \nMore information on our 2020 Symposium page.

SUMMARY:Learn to Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom with Robin Lynde
DESCRIPTION:In this 1.5-hour demo and Q&A session\, Robin Lynde of Meridian Jacobs (fibershed.org/producers/meridian-jacobs/) will show how to weave a neck warmer (a short scarf with a slit) on a take-anywhere rigid heddle loom\, with the easiest warping method you’ll ever use! Rigid heddle looms are simple to warp\, inexpensive\, and very portable. This is a great project for the person who wants to learn about weaving\, as well as a fun one for experienced weavers. Your whole project can easily be completed in a day. A great project to do on-the-go\, this loom can even go camping with you! NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_YGARrXwPSRWZG-xIJ-LGWg \nRobin will be using a Cricket Loom by Schacht (meridianjacobs.com/tools-supplies/schacht-cricket-loom) and Jacob 2-ply sport yarn from her farm in Vacaville\, CA (fibershedmarketplace.com/merchants/meridian-jacobs/m/Mjg%3D). \nStudents wearing their woven scarves at an in-person class with Robin in 2019.\nTwo looms are available to rent for this class. Loom must be picked up and returned to the farm in Vacaville. Rental fee: $25 for two weeks. Rental fee will be applied to purchase if student would like to purchase a loom by the end of the year. \nAfter you register\, you will be sent more details about equipment along with weaving instructions. You can watch the class and ask questions during the webinar\, then do your weaving afterward\, referring to the video. Robin will also be available for consultations. \nWebinar ends at approximately 12:30 pm. \n— — — — — \nThis webinar is part of a series that will be streaming live via Zoom from the Fibershed Learning Center\, a multi-use space to demonstrate and provide hands-on connections to natural fiber and dye systems. The Learning Center will open later this year in Point Reyes Station\, California\, on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Coast Miwok and within the historic Black Mountain Ranch property. \nProceeds from each event support the class instructor and contribute to Fibershed for educational programming. A portion of the proceeds from each virtual event will also be shared with a local and mission-aligned non-profit organization\, selected by the instructor. Currently scheduled online events are listed on our Learning Center page (fibershed.org/programs/education/learningcenter). \nA video of the webinar will be made available to webinar registrants within approximately two weeks of the event.
