SUMMARY:Making a Twined Tule Basket with Rimiko Berreman
DESCRIPTION:Learn classic weaving techniques using locally-harvested natural materials \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, to learn how to make baskets with tule\, a beautiful natural material harvested on the ranch. \nThe variety of tule we are using is Schoenoplectus acutus\, a giant species of sedge\, native to freshwater marshes. She was involved in local industry programs in her twenties and one of her early jobs was sewing products including Sashiko and Shibori at the Indigo studio in Tokushima. SUMMARY:Eco Printing with Cory Gunter Brown of Earth My Body
DESCRIPTION:…a sacred\, somatic\, and sensuous practice \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, for a workshop taught by Cory Gunter Brown that is as much about crafting beautiful textiles as it is about forming deep relationships with the land\, seasons\, and life cycles of the materials we work with. \nThis introduction to Eco Printing is formed with intention\, to bring us back to wonder and reverence\, interweaving in relationship with dye plants\, fiber animals\, and the lands they grow from. This practice is an open door inviting us into a deeper understanding of the ways in which this earth nourishes and cares for us and we may do the same in turn. \nWe’ll work with Fibershed Climate Beneficial wool\, plus silks\, several different wild gathered plants (including eucalyptus)\, and optional iron mordant\, to make living breathing textiles in an expressive and ethical way. You’ll learn how some plants interact differently with different textiles\, how to find out if a plant will work for eco printing\, and when to work with iron mordant. \nYou’ll finish class with a Climate Beneficial wool piece that can be used as a wall hanging\, table runner\, or altar cloth and a few pure silk pieces that can be used in a variety of ways as well. \nCory Gunter Brown has been practicing and teaching Eco Printing for thirteen years. She learned from her teacher India Flint\, one of the fairy godmothers of this magical practice\, and from the plants and fibers themselves. \nThe workshop runs from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday\, and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. The mineral hot springs are renowned and have been hosting presidents\, artists and the rest of us since 1854. The hiking on this property is pretty glorious. Use of the baths\, pools and hiking trails are included if you stay at Vichy\, but pools and baths are available for day use also. \nIf there are participants who overnight in Ukiah\, I will host a knitting circle on the evening of the 29th (we can cast on our special event favor together perhaps or just bring your current wip) \nAN IMPORTANT NOTE: Peggy and Jonathan are opening their home as well as their farm to us. They care (joyfully!) for their young grandson there too. In recognition of that\, I ask that you please test for Covid before you come up. SUMMARY:Traditional Japanese Trivets with Rimiko Berreman
DESCRIPTION:Use plant fiber to make a trivet that protects tabletops and counters from heat \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, to learn how to make traditional Japanese trivets with Rimiko Berreman. \nThese donut-shaped trivets are perfect for placing hot teapots\, coffee vessels\, pots and dishes on surfaces that need protection from heat. They are especially good for holding a round-bottomed pot like a donabe (Japanese clay pot) or a tetsunabe (iron pot). \nWe’ll work with tule (rush) from Black Mountain Ranch and willow from a local property for the inside foundation\, and a choice of natural jute\, or shuro palm twine\, or both for the outside. Each participant will make two trivets. \nAdding a loop for hanging will be optional. She was involved in local industry programs in her twenties and one of her early jobs was sewing products including Sashiko and Shibori at the Indigo studio in Tokushima. SUMMARY:Beginning Embroidery with Arwyn Moonrise
DESCRIPTION:Learn 8 of the basic stitches used in embroidery \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, where we will be learning basic embroidery stitches from artist Arwyn Moonrise. \nYou will be provided a pre-drawn design that includes each of these stitches\, giving you time to learn and practice. There is also space to add to the piece in free form. There will be plenty of time for individual attention and answering everyone’s questions. \nAll needed materials will be provided. We will be using embroidery thread that has been naturally dyed with locally-grown plants. \nThis workshop is great for beginners or those with some experience looking to refine technique and skill.
