SUMMARY:Indigo Extraction Process—from leaf to pigment with Judi Pettite
DESCRIPTION:Wondering how to convert the leaves of Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) into blue pigment? Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, for a day of indigo extraction with Judi Pettite — from a tour of the Fibershed pigment garden\, to a demonstration of harvesting the last indigo of the season\, then extracting the pigment from the leaves onsite using a passive fermentation process. Our focus will be on small batch extraction for home gardeners\, dyers and artisans. Dried indigo pigment can be stored for later use in a dye vat or for art mediums like paints\, inks and pastels. \nStudents should bring their own lunch\, snacks\, and beverages (water bottle/travel mug)\, as well as an apron\, notebook\, and camera. She lives and works in Long Beach\, CA. \nIn the field\, studio or on the road\, she is interested in what motivates people to work with natural pigments\, how they forage or cultivate these materials and how this creativity is expressed. Her artwork is intertwined with the exploration of natural mediums and is inspired by many art forms\, including painting\, drawing\, performance and installation. \nJudi started the BioHue project in 2006 to create plant-based pigments for use in her art practice. The project moved her beyond the studio and into the outdoors she loves. Through her workshops and products\, Judi hopes to support and develop an interest in sustainable colors for artists. \n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 30 before the event. If you cancel after 30 days before the event we can only offer a refund (minus Eventbrite fees) if we are able to fill your space from the waitlist. Otherwise there will be no refunds or transfers. \n\nTuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends\nFibershed is offering two scholarships to most workshops; one scholarship if it’s a small class. SUMMARY:Paint Making with Lakes and Mineral Pigments
DESCRIPTION:Expand your art practice with living color—whether you are seeking an introduction or looking to further your work\, join Judi Pettite at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, CA\, for this one-day workshop. \nWe’ll explore water and oil-based mediums along with the best use of paper\, fabric\, or panel\, with foraged and cultivated paints and ink. Everyone will have an opportunity to make and sample Japanese Indigo (Persicaria tinctoria)\, ochre\, and plant hues as well as gesso making and natural wax mediums. \nStudents should bring: \n\nA sketchbook and a pencil\nFeel free to bring any materials pertinent to your practice.
