SUMMARY:Making a Twined Tule Basket with Rimiko Berreman
DESCRIPTION:Learn classic weaving techniques using locally-harvested natural materials \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, to learn how to make baskets with tule\, a beautiful natural material harvested on the ranch. \nThe variety of tule we are using is Schoenoplectus acutus\, a giant species of sedge\, native to freshwater marshes. Tules are used to make rope\, baskets\, bowls\, mats\, hats\, clothing\, duck decoys\, and even boats by Native people. \nRimiko Berreman will be teaching classic weaving styles used by different cultures\, through hands-on instruction and handouts for you to take home with your woven creations. \nMore than just learning how to weave\, this workshop explains the process of connecting with the land and the plants\, sustainable harvesting\, different techniques of weaving\, and creating baskets and other items. \nEnroll here: eventbrite.com/e/501117424707 \n\nTuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends\nFibershed is offering two scholarships to most workshops; one scholarship if it’s a small class. She was involved in local industry programs in her twenties and one of her early jobs was sewing products including Sashiko and Shibori at the Indigo studio in Tokushima. Those were great opportunities for her to learn these traditional skills. She continues creating things using multiple media. SUMMARY:Traditional Japanese Trivets with Rimiko Berreman
DESCRIPTION:Use plant fiber to make a trivet that protects tabletops and counters from heat \nJoin us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station\, to learn how to make traditional Japanese trivets with Rimiko Berreman. \nThese donut-shaped trivets are perfect for placing hot teapots\, coffee vessels\, pots and dishes on surfaces that need protection from heat. They are especially good for holding a round-bottomed pot like a donabe (Japanese clay pot) or a tetsunabe (iron pot). \nWe’ll work with tule (rush) from Black Mountain Ranch and willow from a local property for the inside foundation\, and a choice of natural jute\, or shuro palm twine\, or both for the outside. Each participant will make two trivets. \nAdding a loop for hanging will be optional.
