1 Day Weaving workshop: Learn how to create textile weaving motifs, patterns, and techniques on a small hand-held frame loom.

Samuel Bautista Lazo, is a Zapotec (Benizaa) weaver from Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico. He is visiting California to share his family’s weaving heritage, the Indigenous way of life and cultural craft of the Zapotec people. Samuel will present interpretations of the woven knowledge encoded in the ancient symbols and patterns of Zapotec textile patterns, natural dye/coloring methods and weaving techniques taught on a small frame loom. Students will create a small woven tapestry or hatband. Wool yarns and frame looms provided. Classes assisted and supported by Tiśina Parker.

WORKSHOP LUNCH: Weavers are encouraged to bring their own lunch or food or share. Vegan lentils will be provided with love.

WHAT TO BRING: Sketchbook, colored pencils, scissors and a small weaving comb (a fork works even better).

ABOUT: Samuel teaches the craft of weaving through his own Indigenous Zapotec culture and history highlighting the role Zapotec people played in the cradle of civilization. Samuel’s home village, Teotitlán del Valle, has specialized in weaving for generations. About 80% of the working population of his village dedicate themselves to weaving or related activity. In his weaving workshop, Samuel will describe the evolution of Zapotec millenary weaving tradition, cultural and spiritual significance of ancient woven patterns, weaving techniques, natural dye methods, plant, and animal fiber uses/processes and the importance of weaving with respect in regards to avoiding cultural appropriation.
