Transforming Fiber Systems for a Thriving Future

“The textile sector is woven into our daily lives. Globally, it provides products, employment, and generates $1.5 trillion in revenue annually. However, its impact on climate change, nature loss and pollution remains substantial. Every year, this sector emits 2-8% of the world’s greenhouse gases, uses the equivalent of 86 million Olympic-sized swimming pools of natural water resources, and is responsible for 9% of microplastic pollution in our oceans.”

– United Nations Environment Programme, Threads of Change

The global textile industry has the potential to rebuild soils, restore water systems, and reverse our trajectory toward climate instability. Yet, it is not taking action at the scale required to address these intersecting crises.

Locally grown Climate Beneficial™ fiber offers a solution. Naturally durable, biodegradable, and carbon-sequestering when produced holistically, regional Climate Beneficial™ fiber production can revitalize local mills, support farmers, and provide a healthier alternative to synthetic textiles.

By combining ancestral knowledge with modern science, we can build fiber & dye systems that restore landscapes, empower communities, and replace extractive industrial practices with Eco-friendly solutions. This is the future of fiber—a balance of wisdom and innovation, ensuring that what we wear supports both the planet and the people who steward it.

Why Support Fibershed?

Fibershed has deep relationships with farmers, ranchers, and artisans who are pioneering climate-beneficial practices. Through a national network of regional affiliates, we are piloting and scaling replicable models—proving that regional, climate smart fiber economies are possible.

We also invest in the next generation of soil-to-soil designers and fiber producers, through university partnerships and workforce training, ensuring the skills needed to sustain this transformation.

Fibershed Ag Scholarship

Would you like to help people access new, viable livelihoods in agriculture?

You can help a new generation find a way into agriculture by helping them acquire a well-paying, in-demand skill, stewarding the animals who nourish and build our soil, health, and livelihoods. To create new opportunities for Women and cultures representing the global majority, we’ve set up the Fibershed Ag Scholarship campaign with an intial goal of $25,000.

With your help, Fibershed can reach this goal and open the doors to accessible ways to get started in agriculture and make a reliable, decent living in high-demand skilled trades and services – sheep shearing, contract grazing, and farrier and hoof care services.  No land ownership is needed and the education required to obtain these skills can be completed in weeks or months, not years.

Please help if you can. Every donation makes a difference.
