Indigo, the sacred plant of blue, has origins to India, the Americas and Japan, but has traveled the planet and grown into cultivated varieties all over the world. Globally, many Indigenous cultures have a practice of creating beautiful hues of blue from this plant.

​In this one day workshop we will explore different artistic and cultural practices of Indigo with BIPOC instructors from multiple backgrounds. Students will learn techniques used in pattern and design as well as tour the Fibershed Learning Center garden and harvest natural, fresh Indigo grown right here in Point Reyes, CA.

​Students attending this workshop will be gifted with 3 items to dye and are welcome to bring one small personal item to add to the dye vat. This is a community collaborative class that will celebrate the freedom of playing with blue hues of color without any pressure to produce perfection. Lunch will be provided.

​With Special Guest: Samuel Bautista Lazo – Naga’ na Nga’ (Green is blue) – The history and evolution of Xiuhquilitl dyes in Anawak. – Introduction to Indigenous Indigo (Virtual Presentation) A presentation on history of Indigo in Mexico/Oaxaca & Central American Indigenous communities, variety of Indigo historically used and the modern practices today in contemporary textile/craft work.
