Making a Traditional Japanese Vat with Buaisou
September 22, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
$111Event Navigation
Learn about the process of how to make and maintain an indigo vat/dye, using a traditional technique of fermenting Sukumo (composted indigo) in ash lye, calcium hydroxide, and wheat bran with BUAISOU staff from Tokushima, Japan. Fermentation takes eleven days in Sonoma before the indigo dye workshops start. Full schedule of BUAISOU workshops here: https://www.sonomaculturalexchange.org/new-events
In addition to making indigo vats with sukumo from Japan, there will also be vats made from locally farmed and fermented indigo by Fibershed producers Mary Pettis-Sarley of Twirl Yarn and Craig Wilkinson of Craig’s Indigo. Mary has grown and composted locally grown indigo since 2013 and learned many of her techniques from Buaisou. Craig also has grown Japanese indigo in Sonoma County since 2014. He composts the indigo using similar methods as Buaisou and helps maintain community indigo dye vats in Sonoma County.
