I have been raising a small farm flock of Icelandic sheep for meat and fiber for over 20 years. Having recently reached the magic full retirement age, I am looking forward to working more with my wooly friends. At 3800 feet (zone 6) our farm is eight acres of mined-over pine forest on serpentine soil which supports very few plant species and limits microbial diversity. This means minimal topsoil with essentially no available organic matter and low pH. Fuels reduction work performed in 2019 and 2020 increased the challenges of improving soil health with animals, cover crops, and targeted amendments.
