If you are interested in using handmade paper to create sculptural forms with armatures, this is the workshop for you!

Join us at the beautiful Fibershed Learning Center on Black Mountain Ranch near Point Reyes Station, CA, for a 2-day workshop with artist Michelle Wilson. We will meet from 10 am to 4 pm each day.

We will use flax from Chico Flax as the basis for handmade paper sculptures. Students will learn building methods for armatures and ways to wrap their armatures in handmade paper prepared in a way that is called “high shrinkage.” In this method, paper pulp has been beaten for a long period of time to absorb a large amount of water, and dramatic transformations can occur when the form dries.

Materials will be provided, but please feel free to bring interesting sticks, wire, basketry materials, thread, etc., that you may want to incorporate into your experiments.

Papermaking is a wet process, please wear clothing and shoes that can get wet. Papermaking also involves some lifting and arm movements.

Michelle Wilson is an artist living in Oakland CA, whose work explores hand papermaking traditions from all over the world. Her practice includes frequent collaborations with other artists; in particular her ongoing projects Book Bombs (with Mary Tasillo) and the Rhinoceros Project (with Anne Beck). She has been making paper since 2002. Wilson has an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts, and a BFA from Moore College of Art and Design. She lectures and teaches widely, including places such as Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Magnolia Editions, the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art Print Center, the Kala Art Institute, and currently teaches printmaking and seminars at San Jose State University and Stanford University. michellewilsonprojects.com @michellewilsonprojects

CANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds (minus Eventbrite fees) available up to 30 before the event. If you cancel after 30 days before the event, we are unable to provide refunds unless we can fill your space from the waitlist. If someone who is waitlisted purchases your space, we will refund your ticket, minus the Eventbrite fees. Otherwise there will be no refunds. You are also welcome to transfer your ticket to someone who wishes to purchase it directly from you.

Tuition Scholarships & Transportation/Childcare Stipends
Fibershed is offering two scholarships to most workshops; one scholarship if it’s a small class. In addition to scholarships for tuition, we are offering a limited number of stipends for transportation and/or childcare. If you would not otherwise be able to attend, and would like to be considered as a scholarship and/or stipend recipient, please answer a few brief questions on this Google Form. Responses will be reviewed by Learning Center staff and kept strictly confidential.

Visit the Clothing Swap Closet when you attend a workshop or event at the Learning Center and exchange your 100% natural fiber garments and accessories. Your clothing contributions must be clean and in good condition. Each contribution entities you to choose one item of comparable value.

You may depart up to an hour after the workshop ends, to allow time to browse and try on items in the closet, and make your trade!
